George Floyd killed my police whilst being arrested.

George Floyd was held down with a foot on his neck preventing him breathing for 8 mintues whilst being arrested in the US - during this time he started by saying he was struggling to breathe. People filmed him and attempted to tell the police that he couldn't breathe and please help him.
The police (cops) ignored the pleas. George slowly lost conciousness and then was taken away in an ambulance - he died.

I am shocked that a policeman is so out of touch with what he is doing and unaware that he is causing serious harm to a person he is arresting. I am disgusted that the cop ignore people trying to draw his attention to what he was doing.

George was black and the cop was white. There are now protests for the 4 police officers involved to be charged with murder.

I am completely shocked that the 3 other police officers didn't step in and stop the killing of this man.

YABU - the cop made a mistake in a difficult situation

YANBU - the cop should be charged with murder.

I cannot believe that the poor man spent his last minutes of life on the floor with people asking the cop to let him breathe - I guess I am in shock that this could happen. I am obvioulsy ignorant to the way some people are treated. Please do not watch the video unless fully prepared - I have never seen someone literaaly die on the floor like that whilst others want the cops to check him. He was being arrested for forgery and not armed.

I think you are right Nursejackie1 and flirtygirl. The USA has to understand that we can see what is happening over there, and that there are power in numbers. They will start to take note when they notice less visitors from here.

C130 · 29/05/2020 13:58

So the POTUS response to this outrage, is to say that people will be shot who are looting. Unbelievable!

Zenithbear · 29/05/2020 14:05

100% murder. The police should pay but they won't. There will be an investigation but no proper action will be taken, The officers will get away with it like they always do.

thisenglishlife · 29/05/2020 14:29

Update: the Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin worked in security with George Floyd at a club (El Nuevo Rodeo) up until late last year (according to the owner Maya Santamaria).

Blurpblorp · 30/05/2020 08:03

@thisenglishlife good grief I was just reading about this. They potentially knew eachother?! I think this charge of third-degree murder is ridiculous, it's impossible he didn't know that George Floyd's life was in danger. Surely they should also note take the fact they used to work at the same place into account? You'd hope...

CoronelSuarez · 30/05/2020 08:07

thisenglishlife that is terrible. Sad

caramac04 · 30/05/2020 08:18

Unable to sleep I made myself watch the video - don’t know why but felt it was not to be ignored.
The police officer was enjoying wielding power over his victim. George was pleading for his life and posed no threat to any of the armed officers.
All the officers are implicated in this death and the officer who killed George deserves the death penalty.
My heart broke for George but what of his family who have no doubt watched the video, they must be so desperately sad and angry.
All restraint training informs that just because somebody can speak it does not mean they can breathe.
The arrogance and brutal manner of the police officer is staggering, I truly hope justice is served.
I would hate to be a black person in America and to live in fear of being killed by an officer of the law just because of the colour of my skin.

PileofToss · 30/05/2020 08:22

Trump’s response to this is absolutely disgusting.

Dee1975 · 30/05/2020 09:41

It’s disgusting and I really can’t believe something like that has happened and the officer has not yet been charged with murder

He now has been arrested and charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter. They looked at the bodycams and it is seems that George really wasn't a danger. He was just refusing to get into the cop car.
AKissAndASmile · 30/05/2020 10:07

I don’t understand how people can support this kind of behavior by going on holiday there.

I wonder this too. I saw the 'lets have a chat about our Florida holiday' trending on here yesterday and thought it must be lovely for people to live in their privileged little bubble, not caring that a country has such a brutal regime against black and brown people. Literally endorsing it. To me it's like deciding to holiday in South Africa during apartheid.

AKissAndASmile · 30/05/2020 10:12

If you've not watched this video already please heed warning and dont.

It's sickening and tear and rage-inducing but I really think white people need to see it. They should all watch the full 9 minutes, watching this grown man revert to an infantile state, calling out for his mama, who had died a few years ago.

Oysterbabe · 30/05/2020 10:23

This has been on my mind a lot lately. Hopefully the murdering arsehole being charged will help but if he gets a slap on the wrist then all hell will break loose.

TabbyMumz · 30/05/2020 10:41

Absolutely disgusting behaviour. But then we all know that. I believe the policeman has been charged with murder.

TheBusDriver · 30/05/2020 10:52

@AKissAndASmile stop being over dramatic.

Where do you go on holiday? The States is a great place to visit. You have to remember the size of the country is vast.

How many countries have far greater atrocities but you never hear about them

AKissAndASmile · 30/05/2020 11:20

@TheBusDriver
ODFOD

BurMaMa2 · 30/05/2020 11:36

TheBusDriver IMO it doesn't matter how what size the country is. Neither does it matter that other countries' reputation for torture is worse. In America, in broad daylight a white police officer deliberately killed a black man whilst his white colleagues looked on and did nothing. The police officer had previously been a work colleague of the man, prior to joining the police force. Racism appears endemic in the USA, when the white Republican President of the whole country threatens to shoot the crowds of people of colour when they riot in anger at the murder of a black man by three white police officers whose motto is to"Protect and Serve" their community.

TabbyMumz · 30/05/2020 12:01

"It's sickening and tear and rage-inducing but I really think white people need to see it. They should all watch the full 9 minutes, watching this grown man revert to an infantile state, calling out for his mama, who had died a few years ago."
Not just white people. All people.

thisenglishlife · 30/05/2020 13:46

Four officers have been fired: Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J Alexander Kueng.

Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey, called the firing 'the right call' and said that he considers Floyd's killing to be murder.

"I'm not a prosecutor, but let me be clear. The arresting officer killed someone. He'd [George] be alive today if he were white."

There's a new video too, it shows that three officers were kneeling on George.

I don't believe that kneeling on a person's neck for 7 mins, even after they tell you they can't breathe, isn't third degree murder (it's worse).

Hamm87 · 30/05/2020 14:14

I watched the full video before it was deleted he was pinned by his neck for nearly 9 mins he was dead before the ambulance arrived and as he was hand cuffed 3 officers didnt need to kneel on him he also had other health issues the officers didnt care

TabbyMumz · 30/05/2020 14:26

It's just come up that a police officer has been killed now.

thisenglishlife · 30/05/2020 20:48

Seen today

George Floyd killed my police whilst being arrested.
George Floyd killed my police whilst being arrested.
CiderWithRosy · 31/05/2020 13:11

Absolutely sickening. That man was brutalised and murdered by people who should be protecting him. The police are payed to protect people not racially abuse and kill them.

DragonTrainedByLucy · 31/05/2020 13:17

To people saying you wouldn't holiday in the States.

You live in the United Kingdom.

Do you really think this shit doesn't happen here?

20wedding19 · 31/05/2020 13:25

How anyone can vote saying YABU is unbelievable and shocking to me.
As an interracial family I would be terrified of living in the U.S
How can anyone keep doing an action that is killing someone whilst they were begging for his life is beyond me.
They all need to be charged with murder. How can you stand by too and watch as a colleague murders a person like that.
I can't get his voice out my head
