To hope this racist woman loses her job

twitter.com/melodyMcooper/status/1264965252866641920?s=19. Was appalled to see this video on Twitter - a guy in Central park, NYC, who was birdwatching, politely asked a woman to put her dog on the lead as per the regulation in that part of the park. He started filming it as she got abusive and called the cops, to say that she (white) and her dog were being threatened by an African-American man and could they send the police (as we know this can often result in a shooting). All the while she was holding her dog up by dangling it from its collar, half strangling it. The man left and his sister put the video on Twitter, resulting in the racist dog strangler being identified very quickly... she has a high powered job with an insurance company. The animal shelter took back the dog, and her company says she is on 'administrative leave' hopefully meaning she will get fired. I was really shocked and dismayed that such open racism is still going on, even though she was being filmed! Surely she must lose her job at least, what company would want to be linked to something like this?

But in order to that the identity has to be revealed. Often the only times the identity is revealed is putting up the video online.

Yes, to the police. Not to millions of twitter users.

I understand with the case in Georgia that the video was shared after the Police hadn't taken action, and therefore sharing the video was effective. But here, we don't know if the Police have so far refused to take action, or whether the man filming even took the video to the Police.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 14:46

@CaribouCarafe An elegant post. Couldn't have worded it better. Trying to explain racism to white people is honestly going to be the death of me. On the odd occasion they 'get it' it's worth while but most of the time they'll just gaslight you into thinking it's not really happening then prance of into the sunset knowing they have that privilege. Just because not every white woman doesn't use this doesn't mean they don't have the propensity to or know that they can.

Lynda07 · 26/05/2020 14:46

I saw this on facebook too, the woman with the dog posted it and was moaning about a black person calling cops on her. As if the race of the person was in any way relevant. She definitely is racist and cruel to her dog.

sauvignonblancplz · 26/05/2020 14:46

It’s not shaming - it’s holding her accountable for her actions. She’s a grown woman; she knew exactly what she was doing .

Rhubardandcustard · 26/05/2020 14:47

I can’t believe so many are sticking up for her. She’s outrageous and racist for saying what she did to the man and the way she drags the poor dog around is horrible to watch.

He said he asked her to put her dog on the lead (admittedly not seen on video) as that bit of the park says dogs must be on leads to protect wildlife. That was his aim in this, he’s a bird watcher and the dog was off lead tearing around the undergrowth frightening the wildlife. All she needed to do was call the dog and put on lead and apologise, not argue back with the man.

I say this a white woman who owns a dog.

I don’t think she should lose her job, I think she needs to do some community service.

PotholeParadise · 26/05/2020 14:48

Thank goodness he was able to film.

She kept walking up to him. She reminded me of nothing so much as one of those awful manipulative children who tore up their own work in the classroom and then shouted, "Miss, Miss, look what Danny did", and she's still doing it.

I don't know what happened before that, but it's going to have to be pretty good to justify what followed.

The stakes were incredibly high for that man and he could have had his life ruined, or lost it. It is indefensible.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 26/05/2020 14:49

Just because not every white woman doesn't use this doesn't mean they don't have the propensity to or know that they can.

I find it utterly sickening, MN and social media is certainly an eye opener.

BlackKite · 26/05/2020 14:49

It’s not shaming - it’s holding her accountable for her actions

It is almost literally the dictionary definition of shaming

Annabk · 26/05/2020 14:50

Off topic somewhat but stringing a dog up by its collar is how dogs end up with a collapsed trachea (amongst other neck issues). Vile woman.

AKissAndASmile · 26/05/2020 14:54

I don’t think she should lose her job, I think she needs to do some community service.

Why shouldn't she lose her job? I wonder how many black subordinates at work she has terrorised, or how many black clients will be happy to deal with her now? If there's been any complaints against her at work and the company didn't investigate then I'm sure there will be law suits now too.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 14:54

I can’t believe so many are sticking up for her.

Because white people aren't in the main able to face up to the severe actions of their ancestors and the damage they caused and also recognise the privilege they hold now. It's very uncomfortable to look into that mirror so it's always easier to dismiss/gaslight/ignore/excuse. It's a privilege to exist in this world as a white woman so I don't see many of them giving up their privilege easily.

dreamingbohemian · 26/05/2020 14:54

It makes life much more comfortable for the perpetrators of racism if we all decide that sharing footage of their behaviour is wrong and ‘part of the problem’ but it’s actually a hugely powerful agent for change and one of the most effective ways in which black voices are actually being heard in America.

This exactly, a thousand times over.

The Rodney King video also comes to mind. People had been accusing the LA police of brutality for decades, to no avail, but that video got everyone's attention.

I find it incredibly disrespectful to say people should not call out racists because it won't help eliminate racism. It shows way more concern for the racists than the people they victimise.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 14:55

@BlackKite

Yes, to the police. Not to millions of twitter users.

Police can’t usually identify people based on their picture alone. They need the public’s help.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 14:56

It is almost literally the dictionary definition of shaming

She shamed herself, @BlackKite. She isn’t Monica Lewinsky.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 14:57

I don’t think she should lose her job

I do. I think her workplace should also investigate ALL her interactions with clients and colleagues who are black. And she should never be hired again. Hopefully this will rattle some of the other Karens into leaving black people alone. Shake up the system. We've got camera phones now.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 26/05/2020 14:58

I don’t see why she should be shamed on social media. She did a despicably shameful thing. She should be ashamed, but she clearly isn’t (by her insistence she wasn’t racist! Hmm) so yes, public attention for her shameful acts sounds right. There should be a big bright floodlight on her behaviour and all other behaviour like it.

exLtEveDallas · 26/05/2020 15:00

I am vary glad this woman was filmed and shamed. Glad her employers were contacted and I hope the police will also charge her (but I bet they don’t).

She is racist and dangerous. A person that is willing to make a false statement to the police in the hope of at best getting an innocent party in trouble (because the at worst scenario is terrifying) is a very dangerous person. She cannot be trusted. I would not want to know this woman, let alone be related or work with her.

Mr Cooper is a very sensible and lucky man. But my blood chills at the thought of what could have happened (and is infuriated that the black men and women of the US need to make these films. I sadly agree with the body cam quote).

I am heartened to see the amount of supportive posts on here for Mr Cooper. It’s all too easy to focus in on the odd racist or blindingly stupid poster. Thankfully they are significantly outnumbered on this thread ❤️

MrsOfBebbanburg · 26/05/2020 15:00

I don’t see why she shouldnt be shamed on social media.

zscaler · 26/05/2020 15:01

I don’t think she should lose her job, I think she needs to do some community service.

The problem is, racists don’t exist in a vacuum. This woman will have black colleagues, and may well have black people who report to her and whose work she oversees.

This video proves she thinks nothing of threatening a black man and weaponising his race against him when it suits her. It proves that she doesn’t fundamentally view black people as equals, or respect their lives.

That attitude doesn’t just magically vanish when she walks into her office. It will influence the way she interacts with her colleagues, the way she reflects on and provide feedback to black people she manages, the way she views who is suitable for promotion or who is a ‘good fit’ in the office. It will affect any decisions she makes about hiring, salaries, mentorship - everything.

If, as this video shows, she doesn’t fundamentally respect the lives of black people, she isn’t fit to hold a job where her decisions affect the lives of black people.

dreamingbohemian · 26/05/2020 15:03

Sadly, I don't think her life will be ruined.

I'm trying to think of someone in the US who has had their career/life permanently ruined because of racist behaviour. Usually they lie low for a while but eventually they sort something out. If nothing else, they can make a living on the right-wing talk circuit.

Another reason why we shouldn't waste any time feeling bad for these people.

Duggeehugs82 · 26/05/2020 15:04

Surely we know enough about SM now though to know that inevitably it will end up with death threats and people jumping on the bandwagon? There has been enough coverage of social media shaming to know that this sort of behaviour has consequences too.

Some people possibly giving the shamed person death threats should not be a reason they r should not be shamed. Thats so wrong. These people need to know their behaviour is 100% wrong and not wanted in a civilised society. If they loose their job because of it being shared on social media then so be it.

Destroyedpeople · 26/05/2020 15:04

That man could have been tasered or shot dead ffs because of one vile woman being told to put her dog on a leadd. She is not defensible in any way.

Dotty1970 · 26/05/2020 15:05

I can't believe how little the poor dog is being mentioned!, it was obviously struggling to breath and was on the floor probably trying to breath when the video ended 🥺

Duggeehugs82 · 26/05/2020 15:05

100% agree with this

missyoumuch · 26/05/2020 15:09

Can you imagine her black and minority colleagues, especially any who report to her? From the company’s perspective there may be lawsuits landing on their door very soon. Someone who is this viciously racist to get out of putting a lead on her dog, is certainly prejudiced in general.

And to think this is what she acts like when she knows she’s being filmed.

Anyway she’s apologised and acknowledged the events happened pretty much as shown so there is zero defense. Her life is ruined due to social media now? Boo hoo. She could have gotten this man arrested beaten or killed for NOTHING.
