To hope this racist woman loses her job

twitter.com/melodyMcooper/status/1264965252866641920?s=19. Was appalled to see this video on Twitter - a guy in Central park, NYC, who was birdwatching, politely asked a woman to put her dog on the lead as per the regulation in that part of the park. He started filming it as she got abusive and called the cops, to say that she (white) and her dog were being threatened by an African-American man and could they send the police (as we know this can often result in a shooting). All the while she was holding her dog up by dangling it from its collar, half strangling it. The man left and his sister put the video on Twitter, resulting in the racist dog strangler being identified very quickly... she has a high powered job with an insurance company. The animal shelter took back the dog, and her company says she is on 'administrative leave' hopefully meaning she will get fired. I was really shocked and dismayed that such open racism is still going on, even though she was being filmed! Surely she must lose her job at least, what company would want to be linked to something like this?

Oh good point Wax, she could also be charged with making a false police report. That can even be a felony.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 13:58

This makes no sense. Who is the real goat here then if she’s being scapegoated?

I mean in the wider context. We pounce on her as the racist to make ourselves feel better as if we are doing something to eliminate racism. We aren't. We have done absolutely nothing useful at all.

Pixiefringe · 26/05/2020 13:58

What a silly, vile woman.

I dont understand though why people always seem to be shocked that racism is 'still' going on today. Evil has no expiration date unfortunately.

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 13:58

Yes she made a mistake but can we have some perspective?

How many mistakes before Karens learn to let black people live? I have no sympathy for her. Her actions are the reason black people - men in particular are being shot, incarcerated and indeed not getting jobs because they 'don't look the part'. She said that it's destroying her life - shocking that a Karen starts crying again after their Karening didn't work. White privilege is even trying to explain her 'mistakes' and having sympathy for her. When you're black you realise that her actions are just naturally what we face on a daily basis in the form of micro-aggressions.

I don't think anybody has suggested that.

Durgasarrow · 26/05/2020 13:59

The term African American is fine.

MrsOfBebbanburg · 26/05/2020 13:59

and then when she did she said 'I'm in X, there's a man threatening me, he's black.' Do you think she'd be in the wrong for being racist, or just physically describing the person she perceives to be threatening her?

Yes still racist. It’s a dog whistle to the police. Would you call the police and say “I’m in X, There’s a man threatening me, he’s white”?

44PumpLane · 26/05/2020 14:00

If I was black, male and living in America with police with guns I would be walking round with a body cam permanently on

Absolutely agree with this.... If I was a person of colour, male or female, and I could afford it I would absolutely have a bodycam on at all times if I was in the States.

The woman in that video knew exactly what she was doing, entitled arsehole.

The job she holds implies she's relatively smart... She knew, She absolutely knew what she was doing.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 14:00

Calling out racism helps eliminate racism. The more that people see they will ridiculed and lose their jobs for racism, the less racism there will be.

PippaHugo · 26/05/2020 14:00

You do understand the inherently sexist origins of the Karen meme?

Used as a term of approbation by disgruntled white men when women were awarded custody:

*"Karen" is generally characterized as an irritating, entitled woman, sometimes as an ex-wife who took custody of "the kids."

“Karen is a slang term used as an antagonistic female character in memes.*

@VladmirsPoutine
So basically you are saying if you are white, you deserve to be vilified and have no right to object to being hounded on social media and losing your job?

dreamingbohemian · 26/05/2020 14:00

I disagree that this episode isn't useful. If it makes white women stop and think before pulling this kind of shit, then it has helped.

AKissAndASmile · 26/05/2020 14:00

Her company's Twitter page is being hammered Grin

That's your opinion but it's only an opinion. You could just as well argue that it stirs up racial tensions.

Devlesko · 26/05/2020 14:02

You think that's bad have a look at what British ministers are doing, it's far worse as it's covert, or at least not publicised.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 14:02

Sad that whites people’s jobs are more important than black people’s safety.

Pixiefringe · 26/05/2020 14:03

@totallyyesno the OP did in her original post.

Menora · 26/05/2020 14:03

Am I watching the same video as other people?!!
She wasn’t afraid of him when she stormed over to him angrily in the first instance demanding he turned the camera off. If you were afraid of someone you would not drag your poor lovely dog OVER closer to the person you were angry with (and she is ANGRY)

The treatment of the dog was enough for me to think she deserves no sympathy, for her to then make the phone call with increasing panic, although she stepped back from the scene she still did not leash the dog and walk far away from the ‘threat’ she made sure he was party to the phone call to make a point

And yes, it’s racist and no I don’t blame him for doing it

VladmirsPoutine · 26/05/2020 14:03

Used as a term of approbation by disgruntled white men when women were awarded custody

Just because white men co-opted the term doesn't make it less valid. We've been calling you Susan, Becky, Karen for years. The behaviour displayed by them is a pathology - if you would rather moan about how offensive the term is than the actual behaviour of those sort of women then I'm glad you have such privilege. I wish I had the same.

SharonasCorona · 26/05/2020 14:04

That's your opinion but it's only an opinion. You could just as well argue that it stirs up racial tensions.

This is a form of victim blaming, telling black people they are at fault for racial tension and by extension racist attacks because they dared speak up about racism.

PanicOnTheStreets85 · 26/05/2020 14:04

Would you call the police and say “I’m in X, There’s a man threatening me, he’s white”?

Well you wouldn't need to as most people are white. A better example would be would you say “I’m in X, There’s a man threatening me, he’s got ginger hair"?

But as above, it's clear that she was threatening to mention his race to the police with the implication that he may end up the victim of police brutality.

dreamingbohemian · 26/05/2020 14:06

If anything Pippa that link just shows that no one knows for sure where the meme came from. Probably multiple sources.

pinkstar01 · 26/05/2020 14:06

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my previous post, I did mention it was the majority and not inclusive to everyone. I know severa lovely white women who would never behave in such a way or condone it. But unfortunately a large majority, atleast on MN, seem to be unable to see things for what they are.

changeitupagain · 26/05/2020 14:07

@Schoenes

As shown on MN all the time threats are perceived.

How many times do we read threads of:

I feel threatened by the person knocking on my door late at night

I feel threatened by the huffing about slow walkers behind me in the supermarket

I feel threatened by the neighbour sending her son over to talk to me about the noise from my garden

I feel threatened by the guy at the bottom of the street filming me when I walk past his house

This woman may well have felt threatened. Not saying the man was threatening her but doesn't mean she didn't feel threatened by the filming.

totallyyesno · 26/05/2020 14:07

This is a form of victim blaming, telling black people they are at fault for racial tension and by extension racist attacks because they dared speak up about racism.
No it isn't. There is a difference between calling out racism and hounding one person to the point that people are sending them death threats and wishing to destroy their life. If you can't tell the difference that is extrememly worrying.
