Tobe pissed off that the majority of the people on the bus traveling into central London with me are not wearing masks?

Are they just too lazy?

No, they probably just don't want to. I catch the bus a couple of times a week to pop into the office and I don't wear a mask. If it was compulsory then I would but until then I won't.

CatBatCat · 26/05/2020 08:00

There is no mandate to do so

Mintjulia · 26/05/2020 08:00

Yes, I’d be annoyed.
But then again I’d cycle rather than catch the bus. Unless you have dcs with you, can’t you cycle or walk?

DrDetriment · 26/05/2020 08:01

I don't own a mask, can't find any to buy at a price I can afford and am very incompetent when it comes to sewing. That's why I'm not currently wearing a mask.

HampsteadHeathen · 26/05/2020 08:20

TFL have asked all passengers to wear masks

It is too far to walk and I don't have a bike and don't feel safe cycling in London.

The buses are getting busier as more people go back to work.

@DrDetriment it doesn't need to be a mask. A "face covering" will do the job of reducing transmission of the virus, e.g a scarf tied round your face. This is where the govt. have missed a trick - by making it a recommendation rather than a rule, everyone thinks it doesn't apply to them Hmm

seven201 · 26/05/2020 08:27

@drdetriment there are lots of no sew versions that involve cutting up an old t-shirt. In case you want to make yourself one.

seven201 · 26/05/2020 08:29

@hampsteadheathen that is so annoying. I wouldn't feel comfortable on a busy bus where people weren't wearing some kind of covering.

GuyFawkesDay · 26/05/2020 08:32

Welcome to the new reality.

Just follow your instincts.
The rules are open to you interpretation "common sense"

This is going to be so much harder to police and control now.

Flowersinthewild · 26/05/2020 08:34

I do not wear a face mask as I have asthma the 3 times I have worn it I have struggled and ended up having a asthma attack. One of the times I nearly passed out in Tesco’s. My doctor has recommended not to wear them.

Also there is far too much conflicting information out there in regards to wearing a mask.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 08:34

Well that's the British for you. Would rather die than take basic precautions. Sorry.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 08:37

On the contrary @Flowersinthewild, there is plenty of very clear information out there that wearing a face covering reduces your chance of transmitting COVID to others.

Flowersinthewild · 26/05/2020 08:37

Also that TFL sign says should Be worn not must be worn, unlike the Eurostar where your not allowed on without a mask.

Pleasenodont · 26/05/2020 08:38

This is where the govt. have missed a trick - by making it a recommendation rather than a rule, everyone thinks it doesn't apply to them

They have made this mistake right throughout hence the masses of people on the beach over the past week. Total joke.

YANBU at all OP but at least you’re protecting yourself.

Flowersinthewild · 26/05/2020 08:39

@Porcupineinwaiting that’s only if you have Covid-19 in the first place. Majority of people do not have covid19 so don’t need the mask.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 08:52

I think the point is you dont know you have coronavirus at the point you're most infective (days immediately before you get sick).

Stompythedinosaur · 26/05/2020 09:10

On the contrary@Flowersinthewild, there is plenty of very clear information out there that wearing a face covering reduces your chance of transmitting COVID to others.

This isn't true. There is some speculation from scientists that it could r helpful with no evidence to back it up, and there is only on good quality randomised trial which shows fabric mask's efficacy to be around 3%. There's a reason WHO isn't recommending wearing masks.

Stompythedinosaur · 26/05/2020 09:10

Sorry, that was full of typos. There is only one randomised trial.

Stompythedinosaur · 26/05/2020 09:11

For reference, the results of the trial are available here: bmjopen.bmj.com/content/5/4/e006577

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 09:14

Can you please link to the trials you mean @Stompy? My understanding is that the 3% related to the effectiveness of a fabric mask stopping you catch COVID. Most masks are not good at stopping people catching coronavirus but do significantly help with controlling the spread. Hence the insistence on all suspected COVID patients putting on a mask when presenting themselves at A&E etc

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 09:15

X post. Will read.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/05/2020 09:17

Ok yes, I know this study. It shows that cloth masks are no substitute to other models when looking to stop someone (in this case a medical professional) from catching coronavirus.

But if you have coronavirus wearing a mask will help stop you spreading it to others in confined spaces.

Dozer · 26/05/2020 09:19

Not a requirement, so people won’t.

MyFuckingFairyGarden · 26/05/2020 09:23

It's the stopping YOU from potentially spreading it to OTHERS as pointed out.

If you can't wear a mask, you could always put your collars up, use one of the extremely thin flimsy ladyscarf err, scarves, lightly and it would still probably help.

It's not about protecting yourself, it's about having the decency to respect that you could be carrying it and not know, and pass it on unknowingly.

Lostnameperson · 26/05/2020 09:24

62% think you’re being unreasonable?? ConfusedConfused

Not wearing a mask is the ultimate signal that someone doesn’t give a shit about others.
(I appreciate there are exceptions for people with breathing issues. That just makes it even more important that everyone who can wear a mask should)

Seems we haven’t learnt anything. I despair.
