Tobe pissed off that the majority of the people on the bus traveling into central London with me are not wearing masks?

Are they just too lazy?

Porcupine If masks don't stop particle transfer inwards, they don't stop it outwards either.

The speculation is that masks will effect the size of particles released (so large droplets which sit on surfaces will be reduced but the level of aerosol forming small droplets will increase) but there isn't any research to back this up, as far as I know.

I think WHO are a good guide for this sort of thing, and they aren't a suggesting mask wearing despite a fair amount of pressure from some areas to do so.

Cases per day in my large London Borough are averaging about 2 or 3 a day. Yes 2 or 3. Single digits. Not 200 or 2000. Why on earth should thousands of people make themselves hugely uncomfortable in masks for that?? We seriously need to get a grip here.

Because people weren’t joining mass gatherings or travelling on crowded public transport!
Wear masks if you want to keep the figures low.

Seems we haven’t learnt anything. I despair.

I agree. Some people still went to Cheltenham Races and Liverpool football when they had symptoms and told to self-isolate. Some people still aren't washing their hands after using the loo. Some people aren't respecting the 2m rule when jogging/cycling on footpaths nor in shops.

As we relax "lockdown", I fear we'll have a second wave very quickly.

Wagamamas · 26/05/2020 09:31

For people to do something it needs to be:

  1. Convenient
  2. Important

Masks are uncomfortable, inconvenient, expensive and their efficacy is doubtful and debateable.

I wear the masks though as i like hiding my ugly mug anyway.

That's because of lockdown! We had exponential growth before lockdown - that's why it was needed. The Covid virus started with 1 person and spread to millions. That's exponential growth. Your 2 or 3 would rise quickly to 200/300 and then to 2000/3000 if people don't carry on taking precautions. Yes, we can start to relax the lockdown, but EVERYONE needs to do their bit to stop it spreading again - that's means respecting personal distance, self isolation with symptoms, washing hands, etc etc.

If the aim of the masks are to stop you from spreading the virus, then its only going to be actually necessary for two weeks at some unknown point in your life. If that two weeks was definitely going to fall in a six week window it would probably be worth the discomfort. If the window is actually years then I'm not sure it is a worthwhile measure to take.

LaurieFairyCake · 26/05/2020 09:39

I will be going on the bus/train/tube every day from next week and won't be wearing one

I've never bought one, I'm not making one.

And it would take my make up off from the nose down so definitely not

EmbarrassedUser · 26/05/2020 09:42

They’re of no real use to a healthy person who’s maintaining social distancing. As soon as they get at all damp (which they will very quickly) they work even less well.

Choccyp1g · 26/05/2020 09:58

Why don't the buses and trains have a packet of masks to take one as you enter?
