The more we are told to move on, the more I wonder why they can't let this man go.

Chillipeanuts · 27/05/2020 09:36

Michelleoftheresistance

Yes, wasn’t it just. Interesting that after a piece highlighting all polls indicating just how angry the public are about this and the huge drop in support, the Communities Secretary extrapolated “I think the public want us to move on”.
It would be hilarious if these people weren’t governing our lives.

JudyCoolibar · 27/05/2020 09:39

Isn't there a general rule of thumb in political circles that if the general public hasn't "moved on" within three days of a scandal emerging, it's time for the cause of that scandal to resign? Cummings is past that stage now.

Inoneminute · 27/05/2020 09:44

I'm not even sure Cummings resignation would be enough now.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/05/2020 09:49

I agree whatever happens with Cummings now, the damage has been done. Bloody Stupid Johnson has lost all public trust and all credibility, the government has proven themselves a shambles that couldn't run a lemonade stand, the man apparently running the PM is either thicker than a yard of lard or an outrageous liar to the public's face while telling them they're stupid, and they've confused the message around isolation/quarantine enough that they've no hope of maintaining it. Job's a good'un.

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2020 10:01

They can't let him go because Johnson can't function without this man telling him how to run the country at every step.

He made an error of judgement.

When people were unable to say goodbye to their dying relatives he saw fit to drive his wife and child 260 miles to his parents house, just in case. While he was there he had a nice jaunt out for the day, a 60 mile round trip, with his wife 'to test his eyesight'; surely something we've all done.

Had he not then gone on to treat the rest of the population with such utter contempt and continue lying and insisting he was right, had he held up his hand and said 'yes I was wrong and I'm sorry' this would all probably been forgotten now.

But he doesn't apologise, doesn't explain, because in his head he's above all that. Like some sort of school 'headmaster' he makes the rules, and we all have to adhere to them.

He, however, being in charge, can do what he likes and we apparently have to all accept it.

Inoneminute · 27/05/2020 10:06

The real tragedy in all this is they have not a hope in hell of getting the public to comply should additional lockdowns be required to control later surges, as MH indicated last night.

Even those who think they will do the right thing will all have special circumstances that justify "just this once" and the police won't be able (or willing?) to enforce it, if there are "grey areas" in the regulations.

Yaralie · 27/05/2020 10:35

It is a sad fact that, in spite of being a habitual liar and a serial adulterer, BJ was able to con a large minority of the voting public into making him PM.

However he is clearly unfit for the job and has such poor judgement as to defend Cummings outrageous behaviour and expect "the people" (ie "the little people who do as they are told") to move on and just accept that Cummings will not resign and he will not sack sack him.

If BJ cannot manage without this despicable person, he should go and take him with him.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 27/05/2020 11:36

'The real tragedy in all this is they have not a hope in hell of getting the public to comply should additional lockdowns be required to control later surges, as MH indicated last night.'

This mentality puzzles me. Seriously, if there is a second wave people won't think of their health and their family's? They will think 'well if Cummings took his family to isolate near family should they need childcare then I'll break rules and risk contracting the virus and possibly dying so there!'.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Are your MP's initials GS? I had the same response, interested to know if we had a generic constituency letter or if the whole conservative party churned out the same response!

MashedPotatoBrainz · 27/05/2020 11:47

i expect it'll be more a case of people thinking that the risk of contracting the virus is a lot less than government are making out because they're not bothered about following the rules themselves, and they know more about it than we do.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 27/05/2020 12:00

I emailed my MP last night. Was excited to see a response this morning, but it wasnt a response at all, it was to say that because I hadnt put my name and full address at the start of the email he was unable to respond.

Obviously, I sent another one in the required format immediately.

He is a typical red-trousered Tory, he wont diverge from the party line.

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2020 12:03

Ulver Grin

Makes perfect sense.

Michelleoftheresistance · 27/05/2020 12:03

i expect it'll be more a case of people thinking that the risk of contracting the virus is a lot less than government are making out because they're not bothered about following the rules themselves, and they know more about it than we do.

Plus you can't ask people to suck up genuine hardship for the greater good as many have done - single parents or both parents down with Covid and somehow managing kids too, or managing kids with severe special needs, people staying at home and managing when it was really hard for them - when it's been made clear now if it's a bit tricky then oh well, drive where you want when you're symptomatic, see who you want, go chat with your mum, have a play in the woods, it's fine really, lockdown isn't that important.

It's morally bankrupt and they know it. If everyone had been told that at the time of lockdown, lockdown would never have happened in the way it did, and the death/infection rate would never have been brought down in the way it did.

pigsDOfly · 27/05/2020 12:21

Personally, the actions of these people will not make me think that it's okay to mix with everyone because the risks must be a lot less than the government are making out and they know more about it than we do.

I want to protect myself and my family and, in the same way that I have not been swayed by the fact that my next door neighbour has completely ignored lockdown, I won't be swayed by the actions of DC and BJ as they actually don't know anything more about this virus than anyone else; even the scientific experts don't know a great deal about it and don't always agree on how it should be handled.

And remember Boris Johnson was the man that went around shaking hands with patients with Covid19 until he got it himself, would anyone really trust such stupidity. I won't be trusting his judgement on anything, least of all this virus.

I'll continue doing what I've been doing up till now, listen to the scientific advice, and wait for the numbers of deaths and infections to, hopefully, drop.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 27/05/2020 13:18

@yoloPenguinsEatfish you may be surprised. My Tory MP absolutely toes the party line on everything. Pleasantly surprised to see a tweet from him saying DC should go and he is on The List

@NoMoreReluctantCustodians you've given me a degree of hope! will report back.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 27/05/2020 13:57

Had he not then gone on to treat the rest of the population with such utter contempt and continue lying and insisting he was right, had he held up his hand and said 'yes I was wrong and I'm sorry' this would all probably been forgotten now.

I think not. A precedent has been set with the Scottish minister and Scientist resigning for breaking lockdown. Cummings should receive the same treatment. No more excuses.

lilgreen · 27/05/2020 16:26

Yvette Cooper deserves a medal! Absolute bullshit from BJ!!! He’s lost it and has to go.

IntermittentParps · 27/05/2020 16:31

What has Yvette Cooper been saying?

lilgreen · 27/05/2020 16:35

Bbc1 live. Liaison committee questions. She was awesome.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 27/05/2020 16:39

I am no fan of Yvette Cooper despite being a Labour voter. But she just chewed up and spat out the flimflam man.
It was excruciating.
There should be more prime-time responsibility. I'm sure more people would watch PMQs if it was broadcast live at a later point in the day.

TheWordWomanIsTaken · 27/05/2020 16:40

^^ accountability not responsibility doh!

ITonyah · 27/05/2020 16:51

I voted Tory but was hoping Yvette Cooper to be the new Labour leader. I like her.
