Is it rough to leave period stairned sheets?

I sleep with my 2ur old and my dh sleeps in a separate room for now I have heavy periods which means despite wearing maxi pads and tampons combined I’ll always have a heavy night. I leave changing the sheets till my period has finished. Is this skany or ok?

I sleep on a large cotton towel during heavy periods to avoid soiling the sheet. If I bleed I can just change the towel each night and it’s easy to get blood out of the towel.

KEF411 · 26/05/2020 17:38

Go back to your doctor. You shouldn't have to put up with this.

Rose789 · 26/05/2020 17:41

Heavy periods are awful. At my worst I had a super super plus tampon, most absorbent sanitary towel, period pants and slept on a towel. I set an alarm for every 3 hours.
I would never dream of leaving it though. I would change the sheet through the night rather then leave until morning and I could never leave for an entire week. The thought has turned my stomach

BackBoiler · 26/05/2020 17:47

Bed mat, period pants, double maximum pad end to end and a super plus tampon. Seemed to save my sheets if I laid super still. Moment I stood up it was like a red Niagara falls!

labazsisgoingmad · 26/05/2020 17:50

i used to have heavy periods i slept on a couple of bath sheets which went straight in the washer in the morning
surely if the sheets are getting in such a state it must be ruining the mattress?
i dont think its nice for the 2 year old either sleeping in that he must wonder what it is

RainMustFall · 26/05/2020 17:51

I couldn't sleep in blood soaked sheets but it's your choice if you do. What I think is wrong is that you expect your daughter to sleep in them too.

Devendra · 26/05/2020 17:54

I used to have bad flooding on my period. I find pretty much all sanitary towels too thin and just rubbish for me as I would bleed in quite dramatic gushes rather than a steady flow. I started using tena incontinence pads they are amazing..kind of like reinforced extra thick sanitary towels ... I doubled up at night and they really reduced the leakage. I don't think you are skanky at all it's not like you are expecting guests to sleep in your sheets.

Rinoachicken · 26/05/2020 17:57

I get you could do without the hassle, I have heavy periods and will wear one or two pairs of pants the whole period to limit the amount of pants that will be stained/ruined from leaks, but I couldn’t do that sorry.

I’d use dry notes bed mats - either leave it on the whole time or a fresh one each night. Minimal hassle, but saves your sheets, your mattress and your dignity

lizzylizzie123 · 26/05/2020 17:57

I take Tranexamic acid and mefenamic acid for heavy periods. They have been so good. I would highly recommend asking your gp for them.

August1980 · 26/05/2020 18:00

I couldn’t. Mine are super heavy. I can sit on the loo and it all falls out. TMI - sorry. A couple hours before bed time I take a paracetamol- it really slows down flow. I also use super huge sanitary towel, a tampon for heavy flow and I just bought some period panties which was recommended on here. Defo wash the sheets. Both you and your child deserve a nice nights sleep in a clean bed.

I used to bleed really badly and had an endometrial ablation. I would use super plus tampons and 2 x super large incontinence pads as they hold more. If I bled I'd leave it if it wasn't too much on the sheets. I'd often lie on a towel and we always have a mattress protector.

MarieQueenofScots · 26/05/2020 18:05

All the suggestions of going to the Doctor would be great if women’s health is adequately funded or even cared for.

OP - I’m sorry, it’s utterly shit. Do what you need to do to make life easier

Brabble · 26/05/2020 18:06

You need to speak to your gp and get some tranexamic acid, I was like you I take these during my period and it’s helped reduce the flow loads

arickitupyourpompom · 26/05/2020 18:07

Wouldn't bother me 😀

princesstw · 26/05/2020 18:09

I used to have really bad periods - now have a mirena coil fitted and for a while they stopped altogether - however I would highly recommend a mooncup - they sound pretty yuk - but they have been amazing for me on relaly heavy days when I have been on a long car journey or know I wont be able to "go" so much. They are eco friendly - as they are reuseable. they take a bit of getting used to but its worth persevering. Someone once told me that a woman looses about a egg cup full of blood a month which doesn't seem a lot but if you spilled that on the floor and had to mop it up it would take a lot.

Personally I couldn't leave my bedding if this happened.

WoollyMollyMonkey · 26/05/2020 18:14

Try disposable bed pads? Available online on various sites, here’s a link to one:

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 26/05/2020 18:16

Yeah it's skanky but I'm not going to lie and say I've never done it so....🤷

Qwerty543 · 26/05/2020 18:22

Nah, it's fine. In fact it's embracing womanhood. Free bleed throughout and roll around in it.

MumInBrussels · 26/05/2020 18:30

When I was bleeding after having kids, which was heavy and went on for ever, I found the incontinence bed pads you can get really helpful (the hospital here gave me some, but the pharmacies also sell them - maybe they do in the UK?) They're about 50cm square and waterproof on one side, and you just chuck them away each morning or whenever you need to change them. Will see if I can find a link to the sort of thing I mean... Easier than changing all the sheets or washing tons of towels, anyway.

Milicentbystander72 · 26/05/2020 18:32

I use a MEGA PAD from Honouryourflow.com when I'm flooding. It's re-useable.

It's a beast of a pad. As long as a whole forearm and massive at the back. It does feel like wearing a cloth nappy but it does the job.

kennycat · 26/05/2020 18:40

It depends whether you wear your night clothes for any longer than going from bed to shower. ie are you wandering round house, sitting on sofa in pjs with period powder on?!
I don’t Really have periods But the facts they are that heavy spy da like it should be investigated as previous posters have said x

Mikki69 · 26/05/2020 18:44

Have you discussed with GP about a prescription for Tranexamic acid? It slows down and lightens the flow. I use it for the three heaviest days and it helps significantly!

mcvet · 26/05/2020 18:48

Hi ! Two things ; buy 2-3 pairs of modibodi pants ; they’re washable and save any leaks ; I just get them out once a month and they are a lifesaver ;
Two ; ask your GP for tanexamic acid tablets ; they half the volume of the blood and you just take them for the three heaviest days 👍🏻

CambsAlways · 26/05/2020 18:53

I personally wouldn’t sleep on stained sheets no, nor would I want my child to either, so yes it’s skanky, if you are wearing thick pad disposable knickers and clean bottom sheet with towels on surely that would be better, I would be contacting my GP not nice for you and your child

MrsCplus · 26/05/2020 18:58

No love I do the same. I have very heavy periods, I could be wearing a nappy and it would still leak through. Wash them at the end.
