I think Columbus is a 'symbol' for the entire colonization/manifest destiny/genocide of Native Peoples of the continental US. There were in reality so many countries and people actually involved it that we'd have a hard time keeping track!
As a child I was taught (wrongly) that Columbus 'discovered America in 1492', meaning the US, not sure what children are taught today. Heck, we still have Columbus Day, although it's not a holiday for most people and it's not treated as a big deal .
We should have been taught that Columbus landed somewhere in the Bahamas and he didn't 'discover' it because people where already living there. And if we're going to 'celebrate' anything it might be more 'appropriate' to celebrate Leif Eriksson Day, although I guess he landed in Canada and didn't get further south than Newfoundland.
As far as 'honoring' Confederate military personnel by naming military installations after them, if they rendered some significant service to the US Military AFTER the Civil War, fine. But otherwise, change the name. It may be seen as a purely symbolic gesture, but even symbolic gestures can have meaning. And we have plenty of pre- and post- Civil War military personnel who deserve to be commemorated.
He tweeted "These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage, and a... ....history of Winning, Victory, and Freedom". Yeah, well those Generals lost the War and sent tens of thousands of Rebel soldiers to their deaths to defend the very opposite of freedom, namely slavery. So, he wants to keep the bases named after LOSERS? How very un-Trumpian. Nah, he wants to keep those names to appeal to the redneck trash that is his base. Hell, they can't take their Rebel flags to NASCAR anymore. At least let them have Scrotus and their Generals, poor babies.
And what the fuck is with his need of adjectives? Everything is 'very powerful, monumental', great, huge, biggest' etc. He must have the tiniest dick in the history of mankind. One that is only 'surpassed in reverse' by the size of his brain.
