McConnell is as hateful as Trump. I think I despise him equally. He could survive Trump if GOP still hold senate in November. Horrendous
Mitch McConnell has filed cloture started the clock for a confirmation vote for Justin Walker, his 38-year-old protege, to get a lifetime seat on the 2nd-most powerful U.S. court.
Walker said SCOTUS upholding the Affordable Care Act was "indefensible" + "catastrophic."
McConnell has been moving at "warp speed," as one expert put it, to get Walker confirmed.
Walker got his hearing the week the Senate came back amid the pandemic. Then his committee vote. Now he's skipping over other judicial nominees for his final vote.
Democrats and dozens of civil rights groups are opposed to Walker over his hostility toward ACA.
A challenge to ACA's constitutionality could potentially come before him if/when he's confirmed to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. He's also only 38. Lifetime seat.
McConnell's procedural step today means Justin Walker could get his final confirmation vote as soon as Friday or, more likely, next Monday evening.
I don't know of any Republicans planning to oppose him.
Walker has all the right ingredients for swift confirmation:
-
McConnell wants him (he's known Walker since he was in high school)
-
Brett Kavanaugh wants him (he clerked for him and did 70+ media hits discounting Christine Blasey Ford)
-
He's a Federalist Society member
Walker is currently a district court judge.
He's only been a district judge for ~6 months & is already being promoted.
He was rated "not qualified" to be a district judge by the American Bar Assn.
(ABA now says he's qualified for the DC Circuit b/c it has different reqs).
If (when) Justin Walker is confirmed to the D.C. Circuit Court, he will be joining Merrick Garland on the court.
Both wins for Mitch McConnell.
