Mary didn't have time to make and pack sandwiches. She was too busy hunting through the dressing up box to find the Drs kit to keep Cummings jr amused Wink

merrymouse · 27/05/2020 11:12

Whatever you think of his reasons for going to Durham, (and I think it's pretty clear that the reason was to find childcare so he could go to work), there was no excuse, once he had arrived on the farm with the private woods, for going to Barnard Castle.

This was the weekend when the chief Nurse pleaded with the public to stay at home, citing the deaths of nurses. The TV news had been full of people being cautioned by the police for sitting in parks and on beaches, and it wasn't clear whether some parks would open at all.

Instead of apologising, he has the entire cabinet running around trying to justify his actions, even to the extent of Michael Gove claiming that it's actually fine to test your eyesight by driving a car.

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 11:12

Exactly @itsgettingweird the details are literally pathetic.

The questions to DC in the rose garden should have been

Why did you not have a lockdown compliant plan for your family?

Why were you panicked and surprised you possibly had covid?

Why did you not self isolate at home?

What did the gov thing all the millions of parents would do in the event of getting ill?

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 11:15

The SPAD, the clever strategy guy literally expects us to believe he had no strategy at all for the bleeding bloody obvious.

This has all been strung together post the event.

chomalungma · 27/05/2020 11:15

What did the gov thing all the millions of parents would do in the event of getting ill

That would be a great question for Boris Johnson.

Certainly me and my ex are having discussions about what we do if one of us gets ill.

Peregrina · 27/05/2020 11:17

We have already heard though, that they didn't expect so many people to obey the lockdown. The pressure for it came from the public in the first place.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 11:18

We and the answer to why they didn't isolate at home. That was the whole point of the sorry we got read out at the rose garden.

Just a point. I'm not a lawyer. But I thought in law mitigating circumstances had to be proved to be both reasonable and necessary.

They keep repeating the reasonable. They are very much focusing on the work reasonable.

Is it possible that it's because it actually wasn't necessary? He's even admitted himself it wasn't necessary.

Anyone with law knowledge know how true my thoughts are?!

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 11:21

Did you break lockdown then Clavinova?

I did make several unnecessary trips to a Waitrose garage to buy a takeaway coffee when I had already been to the supermarket that day - if we are confessing. But I used a contactless card to pay at the till and a serviette provided by the garage to press the buttons on the coffee machine. I didn't buy any fuel having filled up my petrol tank weeks before - likewise DC may well have had a full or nearly full tank before driving to Durham - most people I know have been filling up their tanks to the max to minimise the number of trips to the garage.

chomalungma · 27/05/2020 11:22

I did make several unnecessary trips to a Waitrose garage

Waitrose sells petrol as well Grin

I bet some nice cars go there.

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 11:24

I bet some nice cars go there.

A mixture to be honest - they know about the coffee machine. Grin

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 11:25

IF he did get ill in Durham ( remember he was well enough to pick up son from hospital)
it was sheer luck. Because now it 'helps' explain the 'STORY.

And then because he was ill he had to test his eyesight.........

It's a bloody joke.

He went up for the obvious reasons.
If you hear hooves don't look for Zebras.

Easter get away, wife birthday, mothers birthday, grieving family, cottage, bluebells. stressful time at work,

"mary, we'll stay in the cottage, social distancing- no one will know..."

solieltoday · 27/05/2020 11:28

Clarinova - Can I ask, in all seriousness, are you arguing for the sake of arguing here, or do you genuinely believe BJ and DC are beyond reproach? I’m interested in the psychology going on here. You don’t even have to pretend to keep your job. So why defend these muppets? Do you think the nation will implode without DC?

The80sweregreat · 27/05/2020 11:29

I was in shock when my ds2 came home in an Uber from London on the 12th March with his computer etc to announce ' I'm working from home!' ( my only home!) his still here.

The buzz around London at the time was ' lockdown is imminent' and many cleared off.
If DC had been a stock broker or accountant or whatever he would have been in Durham by the 20 th March at least living it up with his parents in the second home with his family and all this would never have happened.
Being a senior advisor has many drawbacks.
The press around his door should all stop now as that is also wrong.
I'm angry and disappointed about it all too.

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 11:29

The absolute sorry disgrace is the troop of government ministers turning themselves inside out to justify the nonsense details.

Elected ministers.

NoMoreReluctantCustodians · 27/05/2020 11:35

@Clavinova the government is a laughing stock around the world and I find your ever more ridiculous and convoluted reasons for DC doing what he did extraordinary. Even michael Gove knew he looked stupid defending him yesterday.

Can I ask as a matter of interest, what version of it do you believe? Mary's version in the spectator or Dominic's in the rose garden? Because they are both completely different. Which one of them do you think is lying?

whocanibe2day · 27/05/2020 11:43

I received the following response from my MP re Dominic Cummings

"Thank you for contacting me regarding the reported actions of Dominic Cummings, an advisor to the Prime
Minister.
Firstly, please accept my apologies for the slight delay in replying to the issues you have raised. I have been
dealing with a high volume of correspondence on this matter.
Let me say that I fully understand the genuine concerns you have voiced regarding his actions. I know only
too well that many of my constituents have made enormous sacrifices during the lockdown and I want to
applaud all of those who have adhered to the Government’s advice and followed the guidance.
On Sunday Mr Cummings, in a press briefing, answered the questions concerning his actions and the actions
he said were false and which he did not take. You can read his full statement here and reach your own
conclusions regarding his explanation. However, given the nature of the issues you have raised and the fact
that Mr Cummings is an employee of Downing Street, I have referred them to the Prime Minister so that he
can see how concerned you are and respond to them. I will pass on to you any comments I receive in reply."

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 11:45

Clarinova-Can I ask, in all seriousness, are you arguing for the sake of arguing here, or do you genuinely believe BJ and DC are beyond reproach?

In all honesty I think Dominic Cummings and the Government should not have tried to cover up his trip to Durham but I don't think he should lose his job over it - although it seems likely that he might. I'm not a Dominic Cummings fan and in fact I know very little about him - I've already posted that I would take the same view of the situation if we were discussing Keir Starmer or Sadiq Khan.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 11:49

Who that's a sorry not sorry letter!

NewYearNewTwatName · 27/05/2020 11:50

it's all miss direction. everyone up in arms about DC, BJ backing him, all of them coming out with ridicules statements.

what else is going on?

changing agriculture laws to fuck us over selling rights and shit to companies.

writing new trade laws and rules.

Nobody is looking at these, because everyone is looking at the circus master in the middle.

chomalungma · 27/05/2020 11:50

I am just loving the damage it's doing.

2020notQuiteAsPlanned · 27/05/2020 11:53

I guess they are hoping it will all fizzle out.
Call it fake news and move on.
I am so disillusioned.

He should have offered his resignation days ago but instead he is taking focus off the real job off dealing with the pandemic.
And weakening the messages - stay at home, stay alert etc etc for me at least, what little trust I had is gone.
And for no longer have any respect for those who are defending the indefensible also.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 11:53

See clav I dont agree they should have covered it either. And I think it's the fact they have done so with extremely daft excuses and with no recognition of how the public are feeling that he needs to go.
I wouldn't be saying he has to go if he had admitted to leaving, even plan was to take gaming there for security and him return. He didn't return because he fell ill. Even that in hindsight the Barnard castle trip was an error in judgement and pushing the exercise rules as he could have exercised locally.

For me the reason he has to go is the utter contempt for the British public they have shown they have and the face they've shown they think they are well above us and untouchable and actually not "all in this together".

It's not so much about his actions anymore. It's their reaction to the situation. The plebs!

Egghead68 · 27/05/2020 11:56

"mary, we'll stay in the cottage, social distancing- no one will know..."

And then write a fake article making it look like we were in London the whole time. Brilliant plan!

no. As per my PP its orchestrated perfectly to take the spot light of what they are pushing through.
