You’ve just made that up. Travel for work was always permitted.

solieltoday · 27/05/2020 10:06

The govt have become a laughing stock across the world, so I hope Cummings was worth it. Watching ministers squirm over these last few days would have been funny; if it wasn’t for the fact that it reveals their utter lack of integrity in putting their own self-interest before public health.

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:07

Did the Cummings family have no security detail in Durham?

Durham police have now confirmed that they spoke to DC's father regarding security.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 10:09

The most important part of the guidance is that in extreme circumstances with risk to life you can break the rules.

It doesn't say you may break the rules just in case you may become ill and find yourself in extreme circumstances.

Peregrina · 27/05/2020 10:10

The taxi driver can drive back. Don't forget that no one in the Cummings family is supposed to be ill at this time. I am pretty sure that you are allowed to return to your home.

If the Cummings family had been away on holiday in Durham before the lockdown came in, they would have been OK to travel home. But they weren't - as soon as Johnson got ill, he did a runner from Downing Street. We don't know whether his wife was ill or not, because her story doesn't stack up either.

solieltoday · 27/05/2020 10:10

It’s a bloody shambles. As PM we have a man who can’t even bring himself to be honest about how many children her has, propped up by a demented goblin and surrounded by sycophants.

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:10

You’ve just made that up.Travel for work was always permitted.

It was a joke - Peregrina quite clearly overlooked the fact that the taxi driver would have to travel back to Durham - in answer to my post (another journey between London and Durham) - I didn't specify in which direction.

Notmyrealname855 · 27/05/2020 10:11

Written to our Tory MP as our seat was newly won this election. People here say they might vote Tory again but not Boris again

FliesandPies · 27/05/2020 10:12

Durham police have now confirmed that they spoke to DC's father regarding security

But also confirmed that it wasn't the reason they attended in the first place

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 10:13

How does a taxi driver get back to Durham?

I would assume in the taxi he drove there from? Grin

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:13

The taxi driver can drive back.

Assuming the taxi driver didn't fancy a kebab or a burger in London, didn't stop for petrol or use the facilities and catch coronavirus.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 10:14

The 1 hr was never in the guidance or a rule. That came about because Give said one day he would have thought it reasonable that 1/2 for a run or 1 hour for. Walk as that's roughly want it takes to do 5k - which is the right sort of exercise amount.

Peregrina · 27/05/2020 10:15

No I didn't overlook the post - as pointed out, the taxi driver could drive back.

But it highlights the poppycock that Cummings is spouting - he didn't need to drive himself, or when he accidentally found himself in Durham, he didn't even need to return to London, he could have talked via Zoom.

As pointed out, the defence of him is made worse by the Cabinet being po - faced about others breaking the lockdown rules, but now contorting themselves to say it was OK for Cummings.

The80sweregreat · 27/05/2020 10:15

Boris said on the 23rd March in his address to the nation that you can only leave your home to go to work , exercise and the shops. Lots of people still had to work.
Of course other guidelines were drawn up later but that was the message back then just prior to DC going up to Durham.
There were also the isolation rules as well if you had symptoms etc.

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:18

But also confirmed that it wasn't the reason they attended in the first place

Did they attend the property? It's not clear at all. We know that Mr Cummings senior contacted them and they telephoned him back.

Alsohuman · 27/05/2020 10:18

You’re getting completely ridiculous now @Clavinova. Professional drivers were always exempt. Where would he have got a burger or a kebab? Everywhere was closed. With so few people travelling, service stations would have been a lot safer than supermarkets.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2020 10:19

So now they didn't use a taxi in case the taxi driver broke the lockdown rules?

Clav I've been impressed with your never ending attempts to find reasons his actions may have extreme with immediate risk to live involved. You actually come across as interestingly bonkers. But surely there comes a point you must accept you are hypothesising more about the future than Cummings did during his panicked trip up the M1?

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 10:19

course the taxi could drive back. He was working.

DuncinToffee · 27/05/2020 10:20

The whole what about a taxi just shows how ridiculous it is to drive 250 miles for child care just in case.

Needamanicure · 27/05/2020 10:20

He should be sacked.
I don't think he will though - I think he will brazen it out because he thinks he is superior to everyone else. I think he genuinely thinks it was ok for him to do what he wants and then make up some ridiculous excuse for it later.
The wife's column in the Spectator mazagine detailing the experience of having coronavirus forgets to mention all the travelling around, going to the in laws for mum's birthday, the dodgy eyesight testing by driving to a casstle on her birthday.... i wonder why... obviously she realises it was not acceptable

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:21

"Peregrina Wed 27-May-20 09:47:00"
"That would involve another person travelling between London and Durham." (ME)

"Are you now going to try to tell us that there are absolutely no taxi firms in Durham? It's clear that you don't know the first thing about how government departments work. Government departments which send cars for people, will almost certainly have an ongoing relationship with a local taxi firm. Even if they didn't have one in Durham they could have arranged one, and told the firm where to send the invoice.Your excuses are as pathetic as those of Cummings, Johnson and his Cabinet."

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:22

You actually come across as interestingly bonkers.
Grin

Peregrina · 27/05/2020 10:26

Well are you going to tell us that there are no taxi firms in Durham, or London if you wish? Have you ever worked in a Government job and had a car sent for you?

Clavinova · 27/05/2020 10:29

Where would he have got a burger or a kebab? Everywhere was closed.

There is an independent restaurant selling cooked burgers as a takeaway within 3 miles of where I live (borders of West London/Surrey) - available throughout as far as I am aware.

sleepingpup · 27/05/2020 10:29

i work in an extremely unimportant industry and cars get sent for people left right and centre. There is an entire industry of it going on.
