To feel I've wasted my money on Tassimo?

So we got a Tassimo yesterday...the my way one on offer in Costco. Have read some really good reviews about them but so far we've had the Costa Latte and the Kenco Americano and it tastes like it's come from a vending machine! Not sure what I expected to be honest. I have a 'proper' espresso machine but not using it that much as it's a bit of a faff. We've looked at v expensive ones but decided we wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense and the ones that do their own milk seemed as much faff as the traditional machine.

We've got a Nespresso Vertuo, which replaced our previous Tassimo. The Nespresso coffee is miles better, plus they do a recycling programme for the pods.

teddyclown · 24/05/2020 16:21

We are on our second Phillips Senseo machine, but it's now impossible to get the coffee pads in supermarkets, they're only available online. I've been very happy with it, but will soon be looking for something else.

TimeWastingButFun · 24/05/2020 16:22

I find all those coffee machines a faff. Keep coming back to good old cafetiere (found a really nice stainless steel one) and decent ground coffee, sometimes use my Bialetti for espresso. Simple and no plastic waste.

TimeWastingButFun · 24/05/2020 16:23

Plus got a Krups milk frother machine for christmas and it's great - also for adding froth to the kids' hot chocolate.

QuaverQueen · 24/05/2020 16:35

I am really coveting a Delonghi bean to cup machine Envy but not at that price! Sad

florascotia2 · 24/05/2020 18:02

OP IMHO all these machines are about marketing, not coffee taste.

I expect I'm old fashioned, but still prefer filter coffee made with a paper filter and (relatively) fresh ground beans. Very simple, very cheap. Easy to find fairtrade. The fpapers and and grounds go in the compost and are said to deter slugs. I don't like milk in coffee, but if you do, it's easy to add, warm or cold.

AntiSocialDistancer · 24/05/2020 20:35

I agree with not using the milk pods just warming a bit of milk up if you wanted more of a latte or just throw a splash in for more of a hot white.

fishonabicycle · 24/05/2020 20:52

We had a Nespresso. The milk was really sickly, the pods create lots of rubbish, and they tasted unimpressive. We just use a cafetiere now and it's much nicer.

fluffi · 24/05/2020 20:58

I have a tassimo, simply because its quicker and cleaner than anything other than instant coffee in the morning!

When rushing for gym / work it was amazing, press a button, grab espresso or coffee and go! No washing up or cleaning up other than cup either!

Roselilly36 · 24/05/2020 21:04

I have had tassimo, dolce gusto & nespresso, nespresso is definitely the best IMHO.

Cloudfrost · 24/05/2020 21:08

Tassimo lattes used to be amazing... Until they got. A "new improved recipe" about 2-3years ago. It tastes awful now

lauryloo · 24/05/2020 21:09

I replaced mine with a bean to cup machine and it was a great buy.

Elsiebear90 · 24/05/2020 21:12

We had a tassimo gifted to us, was great for a while until I realised I was spending a fortune on these pods to get half the amount of coffee I’d actually like to drink. I got a bean to cup delonghi machine for my 30th and it’s incredible, best thing I’ve ever bought. Tastes as good as if not better than coffee from a coffee shop, and is so economical. I drink two cups of coffee a day, double shot in each and one bag of £4 beans lasts me a month.

MargotLovedTom1 · 24/05/2020 21:14

I have a Tassimo and the best coffee is the L'Or XL, with a splash of fresh milk added. Three packs of 16 for a tenner in Asda. Frothy on the top and not sweet at all. DH is working his way through the macchiatto and latte pods I bought which are far too sweet for my taste.

sashh · 25/05/2020 04:54

Get a moka pot, really. We've had all the fancy machines going but nothing beats a moka pot for me.

I have a mpkka, it can't balance on my gas hob.

OneNewName · 25/05/2020 05:14

sashh We balance ours on a heat diffuser.

You can get nespresso pod crushers for those saying they aren't environmentally friendly.

I like our moke pot or French press.

funmummy48 · 25/05/2020 07:31

I love my Tassimo machine. It’s 5 years old and still going strong. I like black Americano Grande which tastes 😋

NeverForgetYourDreams · 25/05/2020 07:39

I've got Nespresso Virtuo on subscription. Pay £35 a month with the machine free and spend that £35 credit on coffee. I upgrade my machine when subscription ends

SirTobyBelch · 25/05/2020 07:48

I preferred my old percolator.

By best purchase of the past 3 years has been a nineteen-seventies art deco coffee percolator. It is the only way I've found of making fresh coffee that's hot enough to put milk in. And it's the nicest-tasting coffee I've ever had in Britain.

OverZoomed · 25/05/2020 07:56

Our Delonghi bean to cup machine was a slight second off eBay 10 years ago. It had to go and be fixed (a part replaced) last year, which Delonghi made super easy (though pricey), and when it was gone we really missed it. I can’t recommend it enough - lovely coffee (I like trying out different beans), easy to clean, no plastic waste.

FurloughedFedUp · 25/05/2020 08:31

I'm in the Delonghi 'Bean to Cup' camp.

Expensive to buy but ours is used several times a day. I reckon we've had it for around 7 years so it doesn't owe us anything now.

@GloGirl - those are the ones I like, the Kenco Americano grande, I like a splash of cream in mine. I buy them as packs of five at a time from Amazon in Subscribe and Save so they’re a lot cheaper than the supermarket.

I also have a Nespresso which makes “better” coffee but the Americano from the tassimo is my go-to morning coffee! I agree that the milky ones are rank, though the kids like the hot chocolate.

adagio · 25/05/2020 08:51

As I said upthread, I love my nespresso - but in fairness one if the deciding factors when I got it was that I tended to only have coffee on the weekend at home (in work all week) and even then only 1 or 2 max a day - so real beans would go off long before being used. The cost per pod made sense for proper nice fresh coffee. Thinking about it, if we genuinely get stuck working at home forever a bean to cup would be more viable.
We recycle our pods through nespresso (they provide and collect bags).
