To feel I've wasted my money on Tassimo?

So we got a Tassimo yesterday...the my way one on offer in Costco. Have read some really good reviews about them but so far we've had the Costa Latte and the Kenco Americano and it tastes like it's come from a vending machine! Not sure what I expected to be honest. I have a 'proper' espresso machine but not using it that much as it's a bit of a faff. We've looked at v expensive ones but decided we wouldn't use it enough to justify the expense and the ones that do their own milk seemed as much faff as the traditional machine.

You need Tassimo Kenco Americano Grande XL pods. Top up with a heavy splash of milk. It's amazing and makes a frothy coffee.

I hate tassimo coffees.
We have one at home and while husband is absolutely obsessed with it and constantly ordering new capsules as nonstop drinking it, I just done get it.
The coffee tastes vile and horrible and I tried quite loads as DH has every possible flavour here.
Even the Baileys one tastes horrible! Bleeeeu!
I prefer mine Nescafé instant coffee satches, they come in lots of flavours..the Irish coffee is lovely..

MadeleineMaxwell · 24/05/2020 14:33

We went through a bunch of Tassimo and the like before we bought a bean to cup machine with auto milk frother whatsit. OK, it cost about £350 BUT it lasts a good 2-3 years, you can choose what coffee types you make, what beans you like and use fresh milk, plus the waste is far less.

Tassimo etc. machines last about 6-12 months in my experience and one coffee costs between 25 and 50p depending on type, so we did the maths. The upfront investment is a big one with the BTC but actually works out cheaper (and much tastier) in the long run.

BammBamm · 24/05/2020 14:37

I have never owned one but have had them at others and haven't rated pod machines. We bought a delonghi bean to cup and it's amazing. We can't live without it so take it on holiday Blush

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/05/2020 14:41

That looks lovely, @Glogirl

If you look at the ingredients, there's sugars in the milk pods, so if you drink unsweetened drinks, it tastes strange.

I persevered and got used to the taste of the costa lattes. But I make them in a large cup and top up with a splash of boiled water at the end, which dilutes the sweetness a bit too.

I'm going to try the kenko one though I think. It's a lot cheaper for 80 drinks on amazon than it is for the latte which only makes 40 drinks due to the milk pods.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/05/2020 14:41

When the tassimo dies I won't rush out to replace it as I feel guilty throwing away all the non recyclable plastic.

IceniSky · 24/05/2020 14:46

Had a Tassimo for a few years but stopped when trying to reduce wastage. We use Aeropress now and not everyday.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 24/05/2020 14:47

I love my tassimo, I use ordinary milk warm it for 30 secs in the microwave then use my machine to add a coffee. I don’t like a lot of the pods but buy online the gevalia ones which I really like. At a push I can do the lor ones and the hot chops are good. Also quite like the tea pods too.

Haffiana · 24/05/2020 14:49

Tassimo is the coffee machine for people who are 'upgrading' from instant coffee powder/granules or instant hot chocolate.

Nespresso is the coffee machine for people who love good coffee and who are moving on from a cafetiere or other real coffee method.

HemlockStarglimmer · 24/05/2020 14:51

When I got mine (birthday present) we got loads of different pods to try. Didn't like any of the milky ones though. They all tasted sweet and I really hate sweet coffee.

However my preferred drink is black coffee and I can't drink instant any more. (Two years working in an Italian deli turned me into a bit of a coffee snob 😁).

I shan't replace though when it finally fails due to the unrecyclable pods. I'll more than likely get a bean to cup or an Aeropress depending on budget.

LizzieVereker · 24/05/2020 14:52

This is embarrassing but we’ve had Tassimo, Dolce Gusto and Nespresso machines over the years, and prefer Dolce Gusto with the milk frother.

We found that the older Tassimo machines were great, but the newer one just didn’t get the water hot enough.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 24/05/2020 14:57

We have a nespresso latissima and I I really like it. I hate tassimo coffees as I don't like powdered milk or sweet coffee with artificial sweeteners.

Costco will refund. Just clean it and pack it up and take back

CasperGutman · 24/05/2020 15:05

...we bought a bean to cup machine ... OK, it cost about £350 BUT it lasts a good 2-3 years .... Tassimo etc. machines last about 6-12 months in my experience

@MadeleineMaxwell what are you doing to your poor coffee machines? My first one, a Krups espresso machine I bought as a student in 2000, lasted about 12 years. I still think of my inexpensive Nespresso machine as new-ish, and it's actually three years old. I use it every day. I hope your machines are giving you coffee many times a day if they die so quickly.

amusedbush · 24/05/2020 15:09

I’ve never had a Tassimo but I got an ex-display Dolce Gusto for pennies and the coffee was disgusting. I got a Nespresso on a Black Friday deal and it’s a million times better. The plastic waste is terrible but you can buy reusable pods and fill them with your own coffee.

MadeleineMaxwell · 24/05/2020 15:09

what are you doing to your poor coffee machines?

I know, but the first one died after 2.5 years, just out of warranty. Just wouldn't heat water any more and by the time we'd have got it repaired, we might as well have bought a new one, so we did. Delonghi Ecam, I think. Current one still going strong 2 years on so fingers crossed!

And yes, we do use them a lot. Especially now on lockdown. It makes lovely frothy milk for babycinos and hot chocolates for DS, many lattes for my caffeine addict DH and the occasional americano for me.

MilkshakeandFries · 24/05/2020 15:13

Join the Nespresso club! You get the machine for free and pay a monthly subscription which gets your coffee sent to you.

You can also get bags to send your used pods back to them in to get them recycled.

We have coffee everyday, cheaper than getting take-out, and still built up enough credit to buy a second machine for DH's workshop.

Just don't let your DH order the coffee if he's attracted to pretty pods - we now have a lot of weird tasting, fruity coffee because of my DH's attraction to pretty flowery patterns Grin

MilkshakeandFries · 24/05/2020 15:14

Also, if you join through Quidco you used to get quite a big amount in cash back.

LucilleBluth · 24/05/2020 15:16

Get a moka pot, really. We've had all the fancy machines going but nothing beats a moka pot for me.

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 24/05/2020 15:34

Love mine, i like Latte so buy Costa Americano but use a Costa Latte foil pod top over the reader, then top up with milk and pop it in the microwave.

kitkat463 · 24/05/2020 15:40

I have one. Hated the lattes and cappacinos as they are sweetened, the unsweetened ones are better but I ended up using the coffee pods and putting the coffee into microwave hot milk frothed with a 1 pound from IKEA hand whisk, much nicer. Just bought an aeropress ale love it!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 24/05/2020 15:44

They're awful.

We have a really basic, delonghi bean to cup machine and it makes perfect coffee.

Think it cost about £30 2 years ago.

Nanasueathome · 24/05/2020 15:44

With nespresso subscription you can buy a machine for £1
Have a look at their website
You take out a monthly subscription, 12 months, and pay a set amount each month which can then be used for purchases

Hairydogmummy · 24/05/2020 15:47

Thanks ladies. Brilliant advice. Maybe should have bought the nespresso when we were looking at them in January. I don't see myself as a coffee connoisseur at all but used to be a barista years ago and do make coffee with the proper traditional pressure machine occasionally as well as buying too many in Starbucks so I guess I'm more about the flavour than I thought. It was an impulse buy. Bargain, they were just closing and only one left. Do you reckon I can sell the pods? There's loads and loads.

They’re not very good. We’ve got a bean to cup machine & love it.

IShouldBeSoLurky · 24/05/2020 15:54

We have a Dualit espresso machine which uses ground coffee. The coffee is brilliant and the machine has been going strong for 8 years.
