I don't begrudge him the nomination.
He really has had a huge impact on getting the Nation moving during lockdown. It isn't just his kids PE (which a lot of parents, and others are also doing) but he's done workouts for seniors too.
Yes, he's become a household name, but he's also donating the money raised to the NHS.
I know this is considered sacrilegious, but an OBE for someone who has had such an impact on so many, and who continues to work hard to engage so many as an ongoing thing, seems a lot more reasonable than giving a man (who I agree is very personable) a knighthood, for taking some daily exercise in his back garden.
Let's be honest, Cptn Tom said one day 'I need a bit of fresh air, I'm going to set myself a target of walking up and down the garden 100 times before my 100th birthday'
His dd, or DGC says - good idea Gramps, I'll sponsor you.
Then some bright spark in the family suggests a GoFundMe page which happens to capture the imagination of the Nation just at the right time.
Family then engage a PR / Media type and the thing takes off.
In truth though - he's walked round his garden for 10 days, and been very well looked after by his PR team.
In other, local media, I've see 2 ladies walking round their retirement homes. No less effort. Sponsorship looking to be about £200 for the one and under £100 for the other.
It's not Cptn Tom that deserves a knighthood - it is the PR / media team behind him that raised the money.
Does seem ridiculous when there are people who spend 40, 50, 60 years volunteering for good causes that never get any recognition.
I've nothing against the lovely Tom, but the whole awards system is ludicrous.
