to think Dominic Cummings has to go?

RoosterPie · 22/05/2020 20:39

Dominic Cummings apparently travelled to his parents house while meant to be self isolating due to covid symptoms.

Given what happened with Neil Ferguson and Catherine Calderwood, AIBU to think his position ought to be untenable?

Now an organisation called “Led By Donkeys” have parked a van in the street outside DC’s home with a huge screen on the side showing a film of the PM telling people to stay home if they have symptoms, interspersed with footage of people struggling to breathe on ventilators (I think) and other testimonies from victims of Covid.

In the comments, someone has posted, “Total waste of time.” And then, “He could be halfway to Durham by now.”

Also on the Sky newsfeed, someone has made t-shirts for - “Dominic Cummings Lockdown Tour 2020.” Then underneath are the dates eg 31st March - London; 5th March - Durham; 9th March - Bernard Castle.., and so on (not exact dates, but you get the idea).

DioneTheDiabolist · 24/05/2020 14:56

I do love Led By Donkeys.Grin

derxa · 24/05/2020 14:56

On the M1 then they broke the law There are ways to find a bush to pee behind. It usually involves turning off the motorway.

ypestis · 24/05/2020 14:57

But you do have to be held to a higher standard when you make the rules

Honestly, just the same standard would do.

Thousands of people have been fined for making unnecessary trips during lockdown. DC does it and we are told that he hasn't even broken the rules! It's just the silly public not using their common sense!

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 14:58

ListeningQuietly
I hope they would have pulled off the motorway, but naughty Londoners -
"Shockingly, around 20 per cent of Londoners had stopped to relieve themselves on a motorway when driving."

chomalungma · 24/05/2020 15:00

I hope they would have pulled off the motorway, but naughty Londoners

Do you have sympathy for Grant Shapps because no one bothered to give him the answer to some of the basic questions such as "Did he stop and where"?

Clavinova - as regards MNer breaching lockdown. Are these MNers knowingly travelling with CV19? Are they writing misleading articles? Are they dancing at their mothers birthday party? Have they helped create the national response and guidelines?

If a footballer or pop star had behaved in that way they'd have been castigated, made to issue an apology and probably a large donation to a charity of a newspapers choice. DC gets the full support and excuses issued for him.

The majority have done what the Government has asked of them at some personal cost. I have no idea why you are so keen to defend DC - he's undermined crucial public health messaging in a time of crisis. And he's made fools out of the cabinet and MP's.

I was angry yesterday. I'm bloody livid today.

I think the van in a residential area is a poor decision to be honest. Better it was outside DS but I guess security is an issue.

YeOldeTrout · 24/05/2020 15:06

I love Led by Donkeys.

Wonder which poor Sec of State has drawn the short straw to do today's Press Conference...if they wheel out Dame Angela as the scientific adviser, it'll be car crash TV, she can't cope on an average day.

Jeane Freeman (Scottish Health Minister) had a swipe at England at their briefing, in case "people were confused about events happening in other parts of the UK during the last 24 hours"...she went on to say "we need to make it clear that self-isolation means you do not leave your home for any reason".

Bet Sturgeon is loving this.

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 15:12

Are they dancing at their mothers birthday party?

I've got no problem with him dancing in the garden - for whatever reason - if he was in the garden he wasn't in his mother's house - if there are separate properties on the same piece of land they are neighbours while he is there. I've seen neighbours having whole street exercise classes on tv, kids playing violins and trumpets and people dancing.

merrymouse · 24/05/2020 15:12

the two other witnesses need to come forward and identify themselves.

No they don't. They are just members of the public and I am quite happy for them to remain anonymous.

If Dominic Cummings was in London on the relevant days, given his position in government, it should be very easy him to prove where he was.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 24/05/2020 15:12

DH and I both came down with covid-19 at the same time. We have 5 and 2 year old DCs.

Firstly- I read all the official advice available at the time. It was absolutely not stated or implied that we had any choice but to remain self-isolating in our own home.

Secondly - although I was a little panicked by horror stories it was clear if you looked at the evidence that for the vast majority of people our age that this would be a flu-like illness and the chances of us both becoming so incapacitated that we couldn’t provide basic care to our DC was very small. You would have thought that someone who had attended Sage meetings would be well aware of this and would not need to make a panicked flit across the country at the first sign of one parent becoming ill. It is a completely reckless and disproportionate response.

Trying to spin this as a perfectly sensible action that was within the guidelines is utterly laughable.

jasjas1973 · 24/05/2020 15:15

ask why the rest of us are not allowed to go and see our parents/ grandparents/nieces/sisters

Well, i am, if cummings can, then so can i, DD is going to see her BF now and i'm going to see my brother.... fuck em.... i 've stuck to the lock down for 9 weeks, missed visiting a relative who was dying & can't go to the funeral but apparently i could have all along because the rules aren't rules at all, there were never more than advisory.... like 5 a day or take the stairs instead of the lift.

YouTheCat · 24/05/2020 15:18

Someone called Simon Young had asked what DC was doing in Durham on May 10th.

So that's 4 visits.

Shortsally · 24/05/2020 15:22

Dominc Cummings lock down tour.😂

I also love, led by donkey... I just wish they could cover all political persuasions because often what could be accused of one side could be included in the other.

Personally... If someone said to me '' : I've not been anywhere for weeks, more than 2...I've had my shopping delivered, I've not been out and even on the odd day for a walk I've not seen anyone. I've washed all deliveries...

So has my mum..

And they declared they went to then see their elderly mum. Its not something I'd get excited about and I'd think they were being sensible.

If however someone said.. '' I've been out every day buying shopping, I also go out and run, I don't wash my shopping and I buy ice cream from the the van... I visited my mum... '' I would think that's a bit silly

TacosTuesday · 24/05/2020 15:24

So the the message is they travelled for childcare-the guidance at the time was clear; if you have symptoms you self-isolate to contain the virus. There were no exceptions for childcare-if everyone had done this the virus would have continued to spread. Is interesting to watch the re-spin of this guidance that seemed very simple at the time. I seem to remember guidance that said grandparents were not to be used for childcare - symptoms or not.

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 15:25

Someone called Simon Young had asked what DC was doing in Durham on May 10th.

It is a bit like 'Where's Wally?' isn't it? Grin

Wrongdissection · 24/05/2020 15:26

@Shortsally you’re obsessed with that ice cream van 😂

YouTheCat · 24/05/2020 15:27

'Wally' is currently in his London residence surrounded by journos and a huge Led By Donkeys screen showing Boris's speech about staying at home.

YouTheCat · 24/05/2020 15:28

I've just heard the ice cream van going round.

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 15:29

I seem to remember guidance that said grandparents were not to be used for childcare

They weren't apparently - a sister and nieces also lived in a separate property on the land.

TheABC · 24/05/2020 15:30

TBH, my question is "where's Johnson?"

If your advisor is truly innocent, have the balls to stand up for him in public.

SophieB100 · 24/05/2020 15:32

Briefing delayed until 5 pm - breaking news.

Clavinova · 24/05/2020 15:33

There were no exceptions for childcare

There were exceptions for 'vulnerable people' i.e. young children and for work reasons - arguably his reasons met both.
