To be bummed to be "Karen"?

Name changed because this could be outing. I'm in my late 20s and my name is Karen. I feel sad that my name has now become a huge meme. Amongst a sea of Katies in my year at school, I was kind of glad to have a unique name. Now, I feel mostly embarrassed due to the sea of Internet memes. There is an 'anti-Karen' group on Facebook with 127k likes! What do you all think of the name and do you immediately now associate it with the meme? I know there is nothing I can do but suck it up, but I wonder if there are any other Karens feeling the same out there? 🤔

19 of the Karens I know pronounce it to rhyme with Darren. The one who doesn’t, well, she’s not my favourite Karen...

GrandAltogetherSo · 22/05/2020 20:44

I have no idea what you’re referring to?
I just think of ‘Karen’ as someone born in the late 60’s/70’s.
I’m not sure I even know what a meme is. Blush
Is it like thinking certain names sound ‘chavvy’?

ShredMeJillianIWantToBeNatalie · 22/05/2020 20:45

My best friend was called Karen, and was the sweetest kindest person ever. I’m of an age where I know a good few. I’m aware of the meme stuff but it just makes me roll my eyes.

LockdownLisa · 22/05/2020 20:45

I have only ever known it to rhyme with Darren! Who says it should be be pronounced the other way?

OP, I hate this sexist, ageist meme, but I never associate it with any Karens I meet IRL. Having said that, I'd probably felt the same way as you if I was called Karen!!

MillicentMartha · 22/05/2020 20:46

There we go, most popular in the UK in the 1960s.

amusedbush · 22/05/2020 20:46

I was best friends with a Karen at secondary school, she’s now 29 and the youngest person I know with the name but she’s definitely not ‘a Karen’! She’s lovely.

It’s just a meme. I can imagine it’s shit to see but someone picked a name common to women in their 40s and 50s, and it stuck.

Creamcakeandrhinos · 22/05/2020 20:47

I know what you mean Op

Satsuma2 · 22/05/2020 20:48

I know a Karen, known her since the late seventies. Not a nice person at all.

Thurmanmurman · 22/05/2020 20:49

The one Karen I know is beautiful, glamorous and one of the loveliest people I've ever met!

LaurieMarlow · 22/05/2020 20:49

I know lots of Karen’s and without exception they are lovely women.

The meme will pass in time. Try to ignore it.

dudsville · 22/05/2020 20:49

I know lots of Karens, they are nice and not nice in the normal range of ways. The meme is terrible for making people feel bad for no fault of their own.

Can someone explain what is being implied here by being called Karen? I'm missing something
FWIW I know a Karen and she's lovely.

OP take no notice. 'A rose by any other name....' and all that. 💐

jesusandjollof · 22/05/2020 20:53

Black Americans use it to describe a particular type of behaviour

TheClitterati · 22/05/2020 20:54

I know lots of lovely karens.

Paintedmaypole · 22/05/2020 20:55

The meme will pass but the way in which middle aged women are stereotyped and put down will not. Karen was very popular in the 1960s and Karens are starting to reach the age where women come in for this treatment (from younger women as well as men).

BakewellTarts · 22/05/2020 20:55

I really don't get this I like the name Karen (only known nice ones) why is it being picked on. PS I am a dinosaur so must have missed the memo!

thereplycamefromanchorage · 22/05/2020 20:58

I have heard of the meme, and think it's pretty rubbish - I would be pissed off if it was my name. But I think Karen is actually a really cool name - all the Karens I have met have been super cool and fun to be around.

maddening · 22/05/2020 20:58

I am not sure what the meme is saying about Karen's, will look it up, but anyone worth knowing won't base any thoughts on a meme, they are just a passing amusement x

EthelMerman · 22/05/2020 21:00

Don’t take it personally OP. The meme will pass. I know someone called Debbie who no longer uses that diminutive because of the portrayal of Debbies as sluts in TV dramas. In the same way for a while anyone called Sharon or Tracey was maligned.

Itsbeforepartb · 22/05/2020 21:01

I know the meme and I actually find it funny, but I don't think of it whenever I speak to someone called Karen. I know two of them; one is a right bitch and one is completely lovely.

FWIW the meme is not intended to be misogynistic because it's not about all women, or assertive women, at all. It's about a certain character/stereotype of entitled middle class middle aged woman who yells at/intimidates/insults younger retail or customer service staff for things that are not their fault, such as pricing or them not being allowed to accept an expired coupon. The "I want to speak to the manager" thing is an extension of it.

It will pass! I guess it's like Kevin the teenager.

MedusasButterDish · 22/05/2020 21:02

My best friend is Karen. She is brilliant, and so can any Karen be! The "Karen" stereotype is just re-heated misogyny.

Cheeeeislifenow · 22/05/2020 21:03

I know "Karen's" who are not named Karen at all just like "Susan's".
I know loads of real life Susan's who are lovely.
I also don't associate the two.

Boomclaps · 22/05/2020 21:03

If it helps I had no idea what the meme was, and the only Karen’s I know are utterly gorgeous, and both absolute rays of sunshine. They are row of the kindest, loveliest and thoughtful people I have ever met. And they have Wonderful contagious smiles, with warm faces and body language and kind gentle eyes.
Wonderful women. Two people I want my daughter to know, love and look up to! Don’t be upset
All the Karen’s I know are fab!
