To be bummed to be "Karen"?

Name changed because this could be outing. I'm in my late 20s and my name is Karen. I feel sad that my name has now become a huge meme. Amongst a sea of Katies in my year at school, I was kind of glad to have a unique name. Now, I feel mostly embarrassed due to the sea of Internet memes. There is an 'anti-Karen' group on Facebook with 127k likes! What do you all think of the name and do you immediately now associate it with the meme? I know there is nothing I can do but suck it up, but I wonder if there are any other Karens feeling the same out there? 🤔

OP posts:

Or any name of that era (not picking on Gayles the or Sues)

Humphriescushion · 22/05/2020 20:28

It is shit and i hope it stops soon, if it makes you feel any better i my name is another one that is bandied as an insult - have got used to it now.

Doggodogington · 22/05/2020 20:29

My MIL is called Karen....just saying Wink

thesuperfluousone · 22/05/2020 20:29

The only Karen I know is horrible so if she doesn't like them then good!

Fucktacula · 22/05/2020 20:30

I'm not called Karen and I'm fucking sick of this "Karen" bullshit.

user127819 · 22/05/2020 20:30

I'm aware of the meme but I would not associate a Karen in real life with it. I think those who meet someone in real life and immediately think of a misogynistic meme have spent far too much time on Reddit and should spend more time in the real world.

But I agree with others that lots of names have/have had connotations but it's your own name it's more obvious. My name is the name of a popular song and that song always made me cringe when I was younger even though most people probably don't think of the song when they meet me.

Cocobean30 · 22/05/2020 20:32

It really isn’t a personal slight on women called Karen, no one takes it that seriously

Perch · 22/05/2020 20:32

I hate this. One of my closest friends is Karen and the loveliest person.

SionnachRua · 22/05/2020 20:33

I do feel sorry for people named Karen. I know a few though and I never associate the meme with them really. Oddly all the Karens I know are very nice while the walking, talking embodiments of the meme all have different names!

Picklypickles · 22/05/2020 20:34

I have a cousin called Karen and she's the nicest person you could ever hope to meet, in fact all of the Karen's I've known have been nice people. That meme is stupid and some other stupid shit will replace it soon enough.

masonmason · 22/05/2020 20:35

I hate it. I'm not a Karen. I have argued with so many people for using 'Karen'. It makes them look as bad, if not worse, than the person they are referring to. Idiots.

Incidentally I know a Karen in her 20's who works in a local cafe. I have never thought of the meme when I have seen her, not have I thought her name was too old for her iykwim.

Besom · 22/05/2020 20:35

I know loads of nice Karens because I am of a certain age. Yeah misogynist claptrap.

SionnachRua · 22/05/2020 20:35

Though I suppose 'oddly' isn't the word for it. Still, Karen just got the shite end of the stick unfortunately.

There must be Karens out there who are the queens of Karen-itis 😂

PickleSarnie · 22/05/2020 20:36

I tend to think of Karen from Outlander

Who is Karen from Outlander? It really wasn't a name in the 1700s?!

sawollya · 22/05/2020 20:37

That meme is sexist. I felt bad for sharons and tracys. At least karen is just ASSERTIVE.

If you are bothered, change it to caro.

OhTheRoses · 22/05/2020 20:38

I know a couple of Karens who are quite full of themselves.

What confuses me is is why it's pronounced like Darren when it should be pronounced with a longer "a" Kaaren.

Idododoidadada · 22/05/2020 20:39

There was a previous article, posted in MN, that I read about Karen’s (that I cannot find) that said it better but

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2020/apr/13/the-karen-meme-is-everywhere-and-it-has-become-mired-in-sexism

sawollya · 22/05/2020 20:40

No it shouldnt?
Why would anybody say kahhren 🤔

Chickenitalia · 22/05/2020 20:40

I work with a 17 year old Karen at weekends, she is lovely and also utterly stunning. The meme thing came up in conversation and she just rolled her eyes and replied ‘yeah boomer’ and we had a laugh about it. For the record I’m not a boomer, neither of us behave in those stereotypical ways. It’s become the current ‘chav’ type word to put others down. It’s a shame it’s her actual name though.

I’m assuming the poster means ‘Outnumbered’

MillicentMartha · 22/05/2020 20:41

There are loads of girls called Karen my age, mid 50s. It was a very popular name in the 1960s, along with Sharon, Tracy, Sarah, Julie, Jane etc. I must know over 20 people called Karen. Most of them are lovely.

StellaEllaOla · 22/05/2020 20:42

I'm a Karen, I had no idea 'Karen' was a thing until a few months ago. My teenage stepchildren & their friends have spent the last year calling me 'cough Karen' followed by sniggers, which prompted me to research it.

They don't mean to be mean, but I do feel bad and I do hate it.

I had a Tesco delivery the other day - the fresh soup was 3 days out of date so I called Tesco to get a refund - oh how my husband and SD loved that... I didn't even ask to speak to the manager.

Doggybiccys · 22/05/2020 20:43

OP just change the spelling and pronunciation to Ka’ l’wren (With a silent ‘l’) and you’ll be all happenin’ n boss.

seriousandloyal · 22/05/2020 20:43

I've always liked the name Karen and have a really lovely friend of that name too. I wouldn't worry, I'm sure the meme will move on and be a thing of the past soon, we all have short attention spans in this internet age!

AvocaLove · 22/05/2020 20:43

I know several Karens/Karyns/Karins.

I have seen the meme but would never associate it with real life people.

I also don’t associate it with people over 50! The oldest Karin I know is 43, and the youngest is mid-30s. I am late 30s and knew quite a few at school.
