Name changed because this could be outing. I'm in my late 20s and my name is Karen. I feel sad that my name has now become a huge meme. Amongst a sea of Katies in my year at school, I was kind of glad to have a unique name. Now, I feel mostly embarrassed due to the sea of Internet memes. There is an 'anti-Karen' group on Facebook with 127k likes! What do you all think of the name and do you immediately now associate it with the meme? I know there is nothing I can do but suck it up, but I wonder if there are any other Karens feeling the same out there? 🤔

OP posts:

It's the Danish form of Katherine/Catherine, don't you think it sounds better when pronounced the Danish way? ( Kaar - en )

SpaceCadet4000 · 22/05/2020 22:34

I feel you OP! I have a very popular late 80's/early 90's name and I'm convinced it'll become my generations Karen in 15 years. It's such a nasty, misogynistic meme.

Nihiloxica · 22/05/2020 22:35

it's NOT judging people by a name, it's ascribing a name to describe a type of behaviour.

😂

fairfat40 · 22/05/2020 22:38

I’m really surprised nobody has mentioned the race element? The Karen meme was coined by the African American community in US. It was to represent the bossy racist type of women like barbecue Becky (google her). Problem is, white men have used it to control women with an opinion.

beebeeduck · 22/05/2020 22:39

Karen, Becky, Susan, et al are the ones who call the police on black/brown people for simply existing. It's the archetype of the entitled middle aged white woman who feels threatened by anything remotely not like them even when that person or thing is casually minding its own business
That's worse than any of the memes...as a middle aged woman I'd rather be me than be the bitter person that you seem to be.

Bubbletrouble43 · 22/05/2020 22:39

The only Karen I know started a volunteer group running errands and picking up shopping and prescriptions and generally checking up on lonely elderly and vulnerable people in our town. She's fab. Id be annoyed if I was a Karen too!

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 22/05/2020 22:39

It's such a nasty, misogynistic meme.

This. We need to reclaim the name and show the fuckers just what middle aged women can do when they're angry.

AJGranny · 22/05/2020 22:39

I'm a 70s born Karen. So tired of the meme. I've recently come to learn that it started in USA and there it denotes a casually racist soccer mom type and would be used to denote/denigrate a certain type of white woman/attitude. I was already fed up with the meme before I knew this 🙄

AJGranny · 22/05/2020 22:41

Sorry, hadn't read the full thread before I posted. I see the race element has already been discussed.

greengauges · 22/05/2020 22:42

Haven't seen any memes.

The only Karen I can think of is the cheery veterinary assistant with the furry hat in the Specsavers advert. Smile

Beautiful3 · 22/05/2020 22:45

I dont think people associate the character karen with all women called karen. To me, its a fictional character. A bit like when the 'be like Bob' memes circled face book. Now most people have forgotten that. It will stop soon, so I wouldn't nt pay it any attention

Youcunnyfunt · 22/05/2020 22:50

No, I don't, I actually think Karen is a nice name. I know the meme and I do find it funny, because I know the stereotype, I have definitely met the sort but I don't actually call them "Karen"s Grin
Not in the same way that people used the name, "Tracey" or "Wendy" or "Kevin" or "Wayne" in that totally synonymous way where you can interchange it and anyone knows what you mean. I don't think it's got household status yet, if it helps Smile

PoppinPopcorn · 22/05/2020 22:52

We need to reclaim the name and show the fuckers just what middle aged women can do when they're angry.

That is a full-blooded Karen comment

alwayskissmegoodnight · 22/05/2020 22:54

Am I the only one who doesnt know of this association?? Tell me more!!!

PoppinPopcorn · 22/05/2020 22:56

Anyway OP karen, dont change your name. I wouldn't associate people named Karen as meme Karen unless you have the Karen-isms. In which case I might do some light hearted teasing and if you dont take kindly to it that only proves you are meme Karen.

Tracy on the other hand...ugh

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 22/05/2020 22:58

Good! I am proud to be a Karen!

(Not literally, it's not my name. But I might adopt it. Grin)

DJTanner · 22/05/2020 22:59

I have an Auntie Karen and I've always really loved the name. My Auntie is lovely 💖

HotMess21 · 22/05/2020 23:04

"Be glad you are not Diana, when Diane was popular, folk getting your name wrong, I hated it and still do at 58"

Vice versa in my case, @Nsky.

Ilovecats14 · 22/05/2020 23:08

Always makes me think of the meme. Doesn't help that the 3 Karens I know fit the meme.

jesusandjollof · 22/05/2020 23:09

@alwayskissmegoodnight it's a race thing that because of competitive victimhood has been turned into a misogyny thing

Proudboomer · 22/05/2020 23:13

Funny how it is always women’s names and not men’s that are used as a put down.

And no I don’t accept the use of Kevin is the same as the karen memes.

Would it be ok for Me to call any Asian man who wears a thobe And sandals Mohammed Just because he fits a stereotype?

No it wouldn’t be but it is ok to stereotype a middle aged white women with a bob and highlights as karen

sheepysheep · 22/05/2020 23:13

My husband’s cousin is called Karen and she’s ace. Feisty, funny, clever. I’ve always quite liked the name. My name is one of those names that get banded about as being 70s chavvy and I’ve always always hated it ☹️

thisenglishlife · 22/05/2020 23:20

That poster was referring to the racism problem in America where some people do call the police when coming across ethnic minorities (who haven't committed a crime).

I'm a young Karen and I am not bothered bothered by the Karen meme, although it not as well known in the UK. I think Sharons, Debbies and Traceys have it worse!

phoenixrosehere · 22/05/2020 23:22

It will blow over like Becky did.

No one is going to associate you with the behaviour because your name is Karen unless you actually behave in said way.
