to think that people are telling fibs when they say they "Can't tell the difference" with meat substitutes?

I am not having a go or anything.
I quite like meat substitutes such as Quorn or whatever.

But all those videos, and blogs and other people.

Beyond Meat Burger - people claim it tastes and feels "just like beef" - NOPE.

Jackfruit pulled 'pork' - tastes and feel JUST LIKE PORK!!
Nope.

Quorn mince bolognaise - you can't tell the difference with mine!

YES I CAN.

They're nice and I like to think of them as their own 'thing' ratehr than fake beef/chicken/pork iyswim?

Is anyone fooled by these replacements - genuinely??

Or understanding quite well but just saying it anyway to be argumentative over someone making a different choice to them Wink

1300cakes · 24/05/2020 16:18

Yep I don't get it either OP. I'm trying to reduce my meat intake (ideally to zero) but it's really hard, it would be a lot easier if meat replacements really did taste like meat.

I tried a plant based mince that all the reviews said tasted 95% like meat, some said it fooled them completely. To me, it tasted of nothing. Literally nothing - I had seasoned it and I could taste the individual salt and pepper grains suspended in this completely flavour free substance..

*Can I ask again?

If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat?*

It's quite simple. Because
a) we most likely grew up eating meat and are therefore accustomed to the taste
and b) The whole point, and goal, is to reduce animal suffering. It matters not in what form the food comes in to do this.

Should do what the common theme is here
THIS THREAD IS JUST VEGAN BASHING!

cushioncovers · 24/05/2020 22:16

Another few years and I'm sure 'clean meat' will be available 🤞

Chocolateandamaretto · 24/05/2020 22:25

Vegan Richmond sausages taste like Richmond sausages. Because they are both ultra processed but they make great hangover butties!

I’m not a vegan, just a veggie, I want meat substitutes that taste meat because I like meat? I just don’t eat it because I don’t think I can in good conscience. Sorry if that makes you uncomfortable!

Russellbrandshair · 24/05/2020 22:31

I agree. You can always tell. I was veggie for years (not anymore) but I will never forget going to a party and eating some veggie sausage rolls and they were the tastiest rolls I’ve ever had in my life. I sought out the party host to ask where they got them from as they were so delish only to be told they were real sausages. That was the moment I realised there are no decent substitutes. You can always tell. Always.

I eat a mainly vegetarian diet but I don't bother with substitutes as I have coeliac disease so many aren't suitable, I don't like the tase of any I've tried and I find it a strange concept.

What does bother me is when people think they're being oh so clever by trying to trick people so they can laugh at them. I've had a few people try this but not check the i ingredients and they've given me gluten then I've been very ill. I've taken a few bites and they've asked if I like it. I would always say yes out of politeness and they've said "haha well it's actually X I can't believe you thought it was meat" even though I never said that. I've asked what's in it and it turns out there's gluten in it. It's mainly backfired though as I've been violently sick in their bathroom!

shinynewapple2020 · 24/05/2020 22:43

I've had a couple of veggie / vegan burgers which , to my mind, were so meat-like I had to check I'd been given the right meal. I found them off-putting to be honest.

But that's me as a non-meat-eater.

JacobReesMogadishu · 24/05/2020 22:48

I’ve had some nice jack fruit from Waitrose that I could have believed was meat. But it was in some sort of spicy sauce, but the texture was fine.

Quorn mince has an odd spongy texture.

I’m not vegi so I haven’t forgotten what meat tastes like, but yeah the jackfruit could pass.

zeddybrek · 24/05/2020 22:49

There were 13 of us at Honest Burger. 2 of us ordered the vegan burger (which was £2 more annoyingly). As a group we couldn't believe the vegan burger wasn't meat. It was incredible. Very tasty and scarily close to the real thing in appearance. The whole table joked I had just paid more for the same thing. Can't rate it enough. I'm not vegan but wanted to try it out of curiosity after watching Game Changers and thought about reducing meat consumption.

Many people are now vegetarian or vegan because of their ethics on animal welfare or climate change.

Because of these things I have considerably switched to eating many more vegetarian dishes each week.

That being said, when I decide to cook a vegetarian dish I go for something actually vegetarian in nature that isnt processed pretending to be meat.

Much nicer.

While I agree that true vegetarian food is usually much nicer than processed, you also have to take into account that you clearly have the option of eating meat if that's what you fancied. I don't see an issue with anyone choosing to eat something that's as close to that as they can get without compromising their principles.

Having said that, I liked beef burgers or beef mince. In fact when I was a child I would physically gag when eating mince. I much prefer a pretend meat burger (eh Linda McCartney or tescos own brand) to a real one. Not that I have them often. I haven't tried any of the impossible burger style ones though. I suspect I might not like it much. Too similar!

Jackfruit and chicken / pork can taste the same in Asian food. A bit of black salt mixed in chickpea water or flour smells and tastes of egg.
