to think that people are telling fibs when they say they "Can't tell the difference" with meat substitutes?

I am not having a go or anything.
I quite like meat substitutes such as Quorn or whatever.

But all those videos, and blogs and other people.

Beyond Meat Burger - people claim it tastes and feels "just like beef" - NOPE.

Jackfruit pulled 'pork' - tastes and feel JUST LIKE PORK!!
Nope.

Quorn mince bolognaise - you can't tell the difference with mine!

YES I CAN.

They're nice and I like to think of them as their own 'thing' ratehr than fake beef/chicken/pork iyswim?

Is anyone fooled by these replacements - genuinely??

But there must be a reason why the smell and taste is so appealing nutrient wise?

Most meat is actually pretty bland IMO. It's the seasonings that give it the flavour.

yelyah22 · 22/05/2020 18:53

I found some vegan chicken nuggets that taste identical to Maccies ones. I'm not vegan or veggie so I haven't forgotten what they really taste like, these are just the same taste and texture. So it is possible but I think maybe only for more processed stuff - I've had fake bacon and it was rubbish.

Heythrop84 · 22/05/2020 18:54

If comparing to cheapo BBQ burgers or factory chicken they can taste similar. But if you compare to good quality organic free range meat then yes they are very different!

I eat the odd vegetarian dish made with vegetables but do not get items like vegan bacon slices!

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 22/05/2020 18:54

Most people don’t have very sophisticated palates, tbh. Also there’s so much crap in processed food that people forget what the real thing tastes like.
There was a video of lads on some festival giving people taste of "organic blabla nuggets" and so many were praising it and "much better than maccies". It WAS maccies😂

thecatneuterer · 22/05/2020 18:55

The Beyond Burgers taste like meat to me. But then as it's at least 35 years since I last ate meat it could be that my memory of what it tastes like can't be relied on.

cushioncovers · 22/05/2020 18:55

Yes there is a reason that it smells good Year but any flesh cooking smells good including human flesh apparently. In some parts of the world human flesh is called 'long pork' because of its similarity to pork.
Imo modern farming has lost its way and the cruelty involved and the sheer numbers of animals farmed has gone way beyond basic nutritional need. Don't get me wrong if I was starving to death I'd eat anything, including you if you feel asleep long enough 😂

Footywife · 22/05/2020 18:55

It's generally a vegan/vegetarians way of trying to convert you to their way of thinking. They like to try that.

Imo, they're really just trying to convince themselves that the shite they're eating tastes good.

zscaler · 22/05/2020 19:00

I haven’t eaten meat in so long that I don’t think I am a reliable judge any more, but my husband (who still occasionally eats meat) says that for a handful of things (the Burger King impossible whopper, and some brands of sausages) he would struggle to guess they weren’t meat if he didn’t know.

For some things, like quorn, I expect it’s always obvious.

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 19:00

Grin Because it's the veggies and vegans manufacturing most of these products themselves... Not huge food companies trying to cash in

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 19:03

zscaler I believe the impossible whopper is cooked on the same grill as/with regular burgers so there will also be a slight taste of meat from the juices.

I was slightly disappointed when I learned I could not have one. Grin But the spicy bean burger from BK is lovely.

zscaler · 22/05/2020 19:04

If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat?

For the same reason people use dildos. Looks the same, feels the same, fills a hole, but no hearts are broken in the process

WatchingFromTheWings · 22/05/2020 19:05

We just had vegan burgers at our barbecue. I had no idea until my husband told me after I'd eaten it! I can however tell the difference between meat mince and quorn mince. No gristle in the quorn!

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 19:05

Brilliant Grin

oohnicevase · 22/05/2020 19:06

Quorn southern fried chicken nuggets fooled my meat eating sister .. I think if you want to believe you will , if you don't you won't ..
I don't think there is any need to eat meat nowadays 🤷‍♀️

slashlover · 22/05/2020 19:21

I think it's harder to compare if you know you're eating the veggie version - similar to various PPs on this thread.

I see it as similar to people who put the cheapy cornflakes into the Kellogg's box and the other people who insist they only like Kellogg's don't notice.

pigsDOfly · 22/05/2020 19:21

I haven't eaten meat for about 18 month and I can assure you Quorn mince tastes and feels nothing like meat, unless the meat is mushy and slimy.

And although I do eat it, Quorn pieces, that look as if they're supposed to mimic chicken, taste nothing like any kind of meat either but at least they're edible.

I don't eat any made things like vegetarian sausages because they're full of things I don't want to eat.

I did have a vegetarian 'beef and ale' pie in a pub once that was amazingly tasty but it still didn't really taste of meat, it was just really tasty in its own way.

EsmeShelby · 22/05/2020 19:22

I think that long term veggies don't remember what meat tastes like. I like Greggs vegan sausage rolls and I think that they taste like sausage rolls, but it is over 20 years since I had a real sausage roll, so maybe they don't..

bridgetreilly · 22/05/2020 19:26

I can ALWAYS believe it's not butter.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/05/2020 19:29

The old Stork advert with Lesley Crowther spreading thick Stork (🤢🤮) on a scone saying you can’t tell the difference made me feel unwell, I still remember it over 40 years later.

Tr1skel1on · 22/05/2020 19:35

I'm a veggie so I have no idea what normal burgers taste like but committed carnivore DH says that the Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers are better by a long way. He hasn't actually eaten a meat burger for over a year since trying one.

cushioncovers · 22/05/2020 19:39

Yep no margarine tastes anything like butter

Nottherealslimshady · 22/05/2020 19:40

No bull burgers I wouldn't tell the difference, they taste like fantastic beef burgers. Couldron sausages, my husband cant tell the difference, hes a meat eater. Meatless farm mince, cant tell in a spaghetti bolognese. Pulled jackfruit doesn't taste like pork though. Quorn chicken nuggets you can tell the difference but not enough to care.

Honestly, they're getting very close now. I once ate a vegan chicken burger and had to triple check because I didn't believe it wasn't chicken. And I returned a burger in bruges because I thought it was a fish burger!

AravisTarkheena · 22/05/2020 19:44

Greggs Vegan Sausage rolls genuinely tasted too much like real sausage rolls for me to enjoy them- and I was a very flexi flexitarian. I’m not generally into fake meat tastes but I I’d like the quorum gosh fingers that actually do taste like fish fingers!

AravisTarkheena · 22/05/2020 19:45

Quorum gosh lol, *quorn fish fingers!

LunchBoxPolice · 22/05/2020 19:46

A vegan friend convinced me to try vegan cheese - “honestly try it, it’s just as nice if not NICER than real cheese!”. Fucking lies. I will never trust a word she says again. I can’t believe that she honestly thinks it tastes good, it’s vile.

Quorn is ok, but nothing like real chicken. It’s just an ok substitute.
