to think that people are telling fibs when they say they "Can't tell the difference" with meat substitutes?

I am not having a go or anything.
I quite like meat substitutes such as Quorn or whatever.

But all those videos, and blogs and other people.

Beyond Meat Burger - people claim it tastes and feels "just like beef" - NOPE.

Jackfruit pulled 'pork' - tastes and feel JUST LIKE PORK!!
Nope.

Quorn mince bolognaise - you can't tell the difference with mine!

YES I CAN.

They're nice and I like to think of them as their own 'thing' ratehr than fake beef/chicken/pork iyswim?

Is anyone fooled by these replacements - genuinely??

Why wouldn’t you? People give up meat for a variety of reasons, it’s not always about the taste.

HariboLectar · 22/05/2020 18:37

Things like Gregg's vegan sausage rolls or Richmond vegan sausages, they're probably not lying - I would imagine the meat content is about the same on both Grin

TooOldForSims · 22/05/2020 18:37

If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat?

Because most veggies and vegans like the taste of meat but not the fact an animal had to die?

I am also a bit Hmm by this tasting like meat thing because I seriously doubt a pig and a sausage taste the same.

cushioncovers · 22/05/2020 18:37

Hi year for me it's because I loved the taste of meat and the smell of it cooking but I don't like the cruelty that goes with it so I've chosen not to eat it but still miss the flavour. That's why I choose to eat the meat replacements.

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 18:38

RufustheLanglovingreindeer yes I told a(meat-eating) friend of mine to try Linda McCartney sausage rolls... She phoned me to say they were the nicest sausage rolls she'd ever had, albeit small, but wouldn't bother to buy the meat ones again

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 22/05/2020 18:39

I have a problem with the names.
"Vegan buffalo wings". Nah. It's cauliflower. Just call it what it is! "Buffalo cauliflower bites". There is nothing wrong with cauliflower! The fact that you put Buffalo sauce on it doesn't turn it into wings. It's used on many other things.
Cauliflower is freaking delicious. Stop hiding it.

We don't even try anymore substitutes after the quorn armageddon... Quormageddon... DH said that if I want to I can try them myself, but no way will he ever trust any again😂 T'was not that great anyway.

WrongKindOfFace · 22/05/2020 18:39

I suppose if you haven’t eaten meat for years and don’t really remember the taste and texture then they might taste like meat. But otherwise, nope.

okiedokieme · 22/05/2020 18:40

Depends on the type and what you are doing with it, the "chicken" pieces smothered in curry or chilli taste pretty much the same.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 22/05/2020 18:41

You just cracked the secret there😂

cushioncovers · 22/05/2020 18:41

Sausage flavour is easier to replicate as a meat sausage is barely meat anyway. However finding a good medium rare steak replacement is impossible imo

TooOldForSims · 22/05/2020 18:42

Honestly, as someone who has always hated the taste and texture of chicken (yes even in a curry!) but quite likes some of the veggie 'chicken' pieces and strips I am not sure I would agree with that.

Yearcat13 · 22/05/2020 18:43

But there must be a reason why the smell and taste is so appealing nutrient wise? I totally get giving up meat for ethical reasons but surely the fact that it is appealing is something to do with our top of the food chain idea? I eat meat from local, or my own reared animals. I think vegetarianism is the way forward but I'd feel nutrient deficient. Theres a good documentary on Netflix on the race for the perfect veggie 'burger'.

00100001 · 22/05/2020 18:43

I've tried the Beyond Burger - Nope. Nice enough, but not worth the money.
Quorn nuggets - almost, but nope. Actually like these more than chicken nuggets- well the Southern Fried ones anyway :)
Linda McCartney sausages - nowhere near, but still nice.
Gregg's vegan sausgae roll - nice, but not good enough to 'trick' me
Soya Protein chunks - nice if you can stop them being squashy.

Sausages are mainly about spice and herbs rather than "meat".
If you look at Richmond sausages, the thin ones, you will find that pork is 42% and pork fat 10%. Rest is other crap🤷🏻

AliasGrape · 22/05/2020 18:44

I like the Greggs vegan sausage roll as much as I liked the meat one, though as I’m never going to eat them side by side I can’t say whether I’d be able to tell the difference.

I really like cauldron sausages and don’t mind quorn mince as an occasional easy way to make a quick chilli, but I don’t think any of them taste the same as meat.

I did once question the waitress in a pub because I thought my veggie burger was meat, meat eating DH also had a bite and couldn’t say for sure it wasn’t. I was assured it was definitely the vegetarian one. To be honest I far prefer the veggie burgers that are made with beans, chickpeas etc - I never particularly enjoyed a meaty burger so am not particularly desperate to recreate that taste. This one in this particular pub was a VERY close comparison though, I’ve no idea what brand it was.

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 18:44

If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat? I get asked this a lot.
Personally, its not that I want somthing that tastes or looks like meat I just want another form of protein (aside from pulses and dairy etc) to bulk up a meal. It's the food companies who make them to look/taste like meat products.

I've had family and friends say some products taste very similar to meat but others not at all.

We did trick my father with Dennys vegetarian breakfast sausages in his fry Grin he would never willingly even try a meat substitute but he happily ate those without noticing a thing Grin

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 22/05/2020 18:47

According to Iceland Greggs sausage roll has... Grand total of 20% pork...

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 22/05/2020 18:47

notimeforaname

My meat adoring dad ate all the linda mcartney sausage rolls at Christmas...didn’t touch the meat ones

It was a pain in the arse to be honest Grin

Dh likes the quorn scotch eggs better than meat ones as well

00100001 · 22/05/2020 18:47

why does it matter why veggies want to replicate the taste/texture? SUrely the majority of veggies are for the ethical reasons. ANd few veggies are for texture.

sunflowery · 22/05/2020 18:47

I flipping love meat.

I don’t eat much of it for environmental/animal welfare reasons not because I don’t like the taste so that’s why I want it Grin

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 18:50

RufustheLanglovingreindeer I always walk passed the quorn scotch eggs thinking I wouldnt like them. Must give them a try next time I see them!

Wendigogo · 22/05/2020 18:50

I've been fooled by some of the fancier quorn sausages and the quorn chicken nuggets.

I don't eat beef though so no idea if any products are a convincing substitute.

Notimeforaname · 22/05/2020 18:52

I'm just thínkin of all the lovely quorn things I'd love to eat now but have none of in the house Sad
Quorn cheese and broccoli escalopes, my god they are devine.

BelfryBat · 22/05/2020 18:53

Most people don’t have very sophisticated palates, tbh. Also there’s so much crap in processed food that people forget what the real thing tastes like.

Oliversmumsarmy · 22/05/2020 18:53

If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat

I don’t.

I gave up meat because to me the smell of it cooking was gross and it was like chewy cardboard soaked in an oxo cube.

My problem now is when I go out and order a veggie burger I get something that tastes like meat and it really is not nice.
