to think that people are telling fibs when they say they "Can't tell the difference" with meat substitutes?

I am not having a go or anything.
I quite like meat substitutes such as Quorn or whatever.

But all those videos, and blogs and other people.

Beyond Meat Burger - people claim it tastes and feels "just like beef" - NOPE.

Jackfruit pulled 'pork' - tastes and feel JUST LIKE PORK!!
Nope.

Quorn mince bolognaise - you can't tell the difference with mine!

YES I CAN.

They're nice and I like to think of them as their own 'thing' ratehr than fake beef/chicken/pork iyswim?

Is anyone fooled by these replacements - genuinely??

Tbh when I ate meat I really enjoyed beef and lamb and I don’t really expect or want a vegetarian replication, but I’m surprised to see so many people talk about chicken like it’s inimitable. I never ate chicken and thought - ah yeah this is next level I can’t do without this. It’s so unexceptional.

But isn't that mixing up 'as good as' and 'just like'? I've had lots of things that were as good as chicken breast (I would argue that the dark meat is much nicer and more distinctive) but nothing vegetarian that I thought could be chicken breast.

Quorn Crispy Nuggets!! ❤️

00100001 · 22/05/2020 20:39

i did a blind taste test with the Gregg's vegan and real sausgae rolls.
I could tell which was which. But, to be fair, I haven't been give a vegan one under the pretence of it being the meat one.

know this, because I've not been to Gregg's since that blnid taste test! :)

I think the vegan alternatives could fool someone used to eating poor quality meat products.

I agree with that!

Hamsterian · 22/05/2020 20:52

**If you are vegetarian or vegan, why do want the taste of meat?

This is such a stupid question. Do you not have a brain?

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 22/05/2020 20:54

I do like the substitutes but I don’t think they taste the same.

I’m not veggie or vegan though.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 22/05/2020 20:55

They have to be fairly spicy imo

Woeismethischristmas · 22/05/2020 20:56

It's a bit like the I can't believe its not butter brigade. Liars each and every one!

Pleasenodont · 22/05/2020 21:00

DH loves meat but even he admits some of the alternatives are the same as the real deal. Richmond vegan sausages for example, he’d struggle to tell them apart from the real thing.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/05/2020 21:39

Impossible or Beyond (can't remember which, bought at Wholefoods) did taste meaty. We made meatballs with it.

But it tasted like quite cheap mince, like dubious burgers from a van after clubbing that are a drunken mistake. Ok as long as I kept reminding myself it wasn't actually poor quality beef, but it's not exactly tempting.

My wife who hasn't eaten meat for years found the taste disconcerting. We're in no rush to get it again.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/05/2020 21:40

Oh I LOVE Cauldron sausages though! They are so delicious but not attempting to be meat. Also really like Linda's ones.

Kljnmw3459 · 22/05/2020 22:05

I remember accidentally buying quorn frankfurters thinking they're just the regular ones. One bite and it was painfully obvious that it wasn't meat. I don't know what the quorn ones are made of. This was some years ago though. Since then I've tried Linda McCartney sausages and LM mozzarella burgers on recommendations from others. They smelled nice when cooking, very meaty smell but the taste wasn't great. PP was right to point out that that's why finding a credible meat tasting alternative is big business. It's so tricky to mimic the taste.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 22/05/2020 22:11

Oooh they used to have frozen veggie hotdogs in supermarkets...kind of own brand ones

Haven’t seen them for ages

I don’t know if they taste like hotdogs...I don’t know what a hot dog tastes like

Lostvoiced · 22/05/2020 22:16

Quorn chicken nuggets did fool me. And my partner. He kept insisting it was chicken.

I do get what you mean though, my sister swore that you couldn't tell that a pizza she got was vegan and you certainly could.

strugglingwithdeciding · 22/05/2020 22:25

How can they call them vegan sausage rolls though surely it's a vegan roll as a sausage roll would be meat , like vegetarian bacon it's. Or bacon is it it's vaggie something or other ( not sure what ) bit I can def tell taste of quorn to meat some I like others not but def don't taste like meat it's trying to be like as such

ChangeThePassword · 22/05/2020 22:36

How can they call them vegan sausage rolls though

Hmm

Why do you even care about this petty shit.

Is a vegan sausage roll because its vegan sausage alternative wrapped in pastry.

If you think they're no such thing as sausage that isn't meat, I suggest you look up Glamorgan sausages. They are not a recent thing.

FeelinFagin · 22/05/2020 22:41

The closest I've ever come to thinking, "Hmm... quite meat like" was some vegan Lincolnshire sausages. They tasted like Lincolnshire sausages that had far too many herbs in to taste the pork. It didn't mean they tasted good though. They just tasted like the worst brand of real meat sausages you can buy.

I will never understand why vegans or vegetarians would want to eat a meat tasting non-meat product though. Meat is the delicious flesh of dead animals. Why would you want to emulate that?

And vegan bacon is the devil's work. I tried it once and I wish I could wipe it from my memory.

Ibizafun · 22/05/2020 22:45

I am vegetarian and don’t want the taste or texture of meat but the Beyond burgers and sausages which are over here from the states are on a different level, better than any other I have had. And no I don’t work for them!

Clumsyduck · 22/05/2020 22:48

Quien chicken nuggets

The rest on the whole . No .

Clumsyduck · 22/05/2020 22:49

Quorn *

DesiDiva2020 · 22/05/2020 22:52

So annoying when non vegans say they can't understand why some vegans want to eat things that taste like meat.
The majority of vegans were meat eaters once but gave it up for ethical reasons.
I eat some meat subs because they're filling, some taste good, they help me recreate meals I used to enjoy. Meat tastes good. But being vegan is more important to me and I'm healthy and happy without it. But to claim you don't know why some vegans would want to eat it is faux naïveté and very irritating

Beautiful3 · 22/05/2020 22:55

I agree as I detest quorn! I'd rather make a vegetable chilli/curry/lasagna instead of a fake meat.

Clumsyduck · 22/05/2020 22:57

And agree with pp yes it is irritating, I have settled on eating a plant based diet about 70 percent of the week . And as said above , if you have always eaten meat then it’s nice to find replacements that you can recreate dishes you would normally have eaten with meat .

zscaler · 22/05/2020 23:08

I will never understand why vegans or vegetarians would want to eat a meat tasting non-meat product though. Meat is the delicious flesh of dead animals. Why would you want to emulate that?

In the nicest possible way, are you actually serious that you can’t understand this?

I didn’t stop eating meat because I don’t like the taste or texture. Meat is delicious.

I stopped eating meat because I don’t want animals to be killed on my behalf.

So if I can get something that looks and tastes like meat but, crucially, doesn’t involve the slaughter of an animal, it’s great news for me.

If you truly find that impossible to understand then it indicates a lack of intelligence or a complete failure of imagination.

Lifeaback · 22/05/2020 23:15

Quorn nuggets and Linda McCartney sausage rolls taste similar to meat versions. I put that down to the fact chicken nuggets and sausage rolls are so processed they don’t really taste like meat anyway!

I was vegetarian for 6 years. In all that time, I didn’t crave or miss meat- I never liked meat substitutes so ate fresh veg based meals. One day I started craving meat and no substitutes taste like meat, hence why I started to eat a few meat products again
