To use bar soap instead of liquid handsoap

Honeybee85 · 22/05/2020 12:38

Liquid handsoap is sold out completely, at every shop here (we live outside the UK).
Bar soap is still widely available though for the same price as it was before (unfortunately that doesn't apply to liquid handsanitizer, this has become 3 times more expensive then it was before).

I still have enough handsoap left for about 2 weeks use, but I'm afraid there still won't be any available after we run out of our current supply. I was planning to buy bar soap to put by the sink in the toilet but DH thinks it's grim to use bar soap for washing hands after toilet use. He says we better buy shower gel and use that instead.
I'm thinking that won't do the cleansing job as good as bar soap.

AIBU to think it's fine to use bar soap in the toilet?

YABU : it's grim, use showergel

YANBU : don't worry, it's fine to use bar soap

I think lockdown must be getting to me as I’m getting excited about trying different brands of soap - the old fashioned ones at that Grin

Like pp we switched to bar soap to cut down on plastic. Pears is lovely and doesn’t go slimy or cracked. We had to resort to Wright’s Coal Tar when the pandemic hit and the shop was out of everything. Crikey it’s a pungent smell - very school lavs and that crinkly toilet paper Grin. I’m used to it now though and when it runs out (this stuff lasts forever) I’ll try something new but old like Palmolive or Imperial Leather. It’s like the 70s never went away Grin

Can you imagine ever going to a bar or restaurant or hotel and there being a bar of soap in the loos? NO!

It's for this reason, we would never have bar soap in our downstairs loo or guests' bathroom. If it was brand new, maybe.

Figmentofmyimagination · 23/05/2020 14:29

bertucci it’s your home - not an airb&b.

Honeybee85 · 23/05/2020 14:30

Just checked Iherb.com - they have 245 different kind of bar soaps available!

I don't use a bar cleanser (though I have used the Clinique one in the past). I like Superdrug's Vit E hot cloth cleanser though last time I was in there they didn't have it and I had to get their Natural Radiant one, which is ok, but not as nice.

JustaScratch · 23/05/2020 14:43

We've switched to bar soap recently. Didn't like throwing plastic bottles away from an environmental POV and the research seems to suggest it's no less hygienic than liquid soap. We have nice soap dishes that stop the soap getting slimy and have also switched to bar soap in the shower - have lovely aloe vera palm oil free soap and it's nice.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 23/05/2020 21:58

We had to resort to Wright’s Coal Tar

Sadly it’s not real any more. It used to be the best thing to treat eczema. Now it’s just the coal tar smell with no actual tar.

Aragog · 23/05/2020 22:02

We use bar soaps for the show - and solid shampoo and conditioner.

We have liquid soap in the downstairs toilet as it's easier for us as not enough room for a soap tray. But not for hygiene reasons.

ChickenCluckWaddle · 24/05/2020 12:29

@AnnieOH1 and others recommending making liquid soap from bar soap, it actually isn't safe I'm afraid. I'm a professional soapmaker and the problem with doing that is that you would need a preservative to make it safe, because otherwise the water content will be too high and the pH too low, which allows certain unpleasant pathogens to take hold. It's even worse if the soap mixture is kept in sunlight instead of in the fridge.
Can also confirm real coal tar soap doesn't really exist any more within the EU - coal tar and pine tar have both been banned because of concerns over carcinogenicity. The soaps that call themselves such are pale imitations that have scent added to make them smell the way real coal tar soap did. There is an exception for use in prescription products but this doesn't cover the products that most people think of as 'coal tar soap, such as Wright's, which has no actual coal tar in it now.

One thing I’ve found with bar soap is they it leaves more if a ring when I use it in the bath. Not a major thing as I clean the bath after every use but after using bar soap it really needs a clean.

It is good for cleaning my make up eraser cloth and also it’s good for brushes and v effective for getting make up out of a sponge

BikeRunSki · 24/05/2020 13:56

@AnnieOH1, that’s really interesting about the added phenol smell.

Branster · 24/05/2020 14:03

OP, I use normal bars of soap 90% of the time, only use liquid soap because it’s easier. I never use body wash gel but the rest of my family does. In my house everyone else prefers liquid soap.
It makes no difference what you use as long as you wash your hands properly.
I personally feel cleaner using a bar of soap but it terms of actual cleanliness they are both equally effective.

In the UK there was a real shortage of liquid soap and hand sanitiser around where I live and I don’t like to buy the expensive liquid soap because it is money down the drain. Bars of soap were widely available for a long time though until one day they weren’t.
If I were you I’d say buy plain bars of soap (Dove apparently not as good for destroying the virus but I don’t know why. I also don’t trust hand made soap). I struggled to find any hand gel and liquid soap for a long time but just about eventually found multipacks on Amazon which were not overpriced so we are now well stocked. Over two months in, our shops are back to normal and you can buy any hand cleaning product you want.
Hopefully your country will redress the supply issue the same as it happened here.

Branster · 24/05/2020 14:06

You can also get those magnet holders on Amazon. My grandma used to have those and on a thread here on MN I found out they still exist!

Branster · 24/05/2020 14:08

*We're officially converted from today.

The bar soap was first used in a ceremonial washing after toilet use this morning by yours truly.*

😂😂😂

Well done OP.

woodhill · 24/05/2020 14:12

I use both and have them at every sink.

grey12 · 24/05/2020 14:14

YANBU bar soap is hygienic. It kind of "self cleans". Otherwise there is something called the grater dispenser

Honeybee85 · 24/05/2020 14:18

@Branster

It got even better. DH underwent the same cleansing after he made sure my hands had not rotten off after using the toilet (and soap) for a second time!

I've always used bars of soap. I like Pears as hand soap and I use Dove to wash in. I don't think shower gel or hand soaps leave you feeling clean. I used to love coal tar soap but haven't seen it for years. The big green blocks of fairy soap used to be good for washing laundry to get stains out, but cant get it any more.

fussychica · 24/05/2020 14:37

Pears bar soap in the loo and liquid soap in the kitchen, mainly because the pump dispenser is more discrete in my small kitchen.

fussychica · 24/05/2020 14:40

mini Wright's coal tar soap is still available from Superdrug, some independent chemists and Amazon.

copperoliver · 24/05/2020 17:25

Bar soap is fine. X
This one is antiseptic too.

Good to see more soap converts. I started using it again after reading the huge thread on here a couple of years ago. It's amazing how we've been conditioned to think a bar of soap is unhygienic or bad for our skin. My skin is so much better since I switched.

My favourites are Nesti Dante and the French soaps (like Savon de Marseille but in lots of different scents and colours).

I've found two that are good for my face - Pears green soap and a handmade goats milk soap that I got from a local market. I don't think liquid face washes were cleansing my skin properly; it's so much clearer with either of those two soaps.

woodhill · 25/05/2020 09:45

I like the blue pears soap

begoniapot · 25/05/2020 17:28

I have some hair shampoo and a body wash I'm not overly keen on, and I've decanted them into the empty bottles to use as hand soap. If not I'd use bar soap.
