To ask why I’m not loosing weight with all the excercise I’m doing?!

Endorphins · 22/05/2020 10:08

So I excercise 6 days per week and eat healthy 5 days per week!

I do 3 days of weight and strength training
2 days of running, generally about 7k each time
1 day of yoga for 60 minutes

I track via MFP and generally have about between 1300 and 1500 cals per day

On the weekend I relax the cal counting but don’t binge

I am still breast feeding my 2 year old and she feeds multiple times per day and throughout the night

I weigh 9 and a half stone

PhoneLock · 22/05/2020 12:25

Perhaps the OP wants to lose weight for aesthetic reasons.

HauntedGoatFart · 22/05/2020 12:27

I had 3 kids, and for each my body held onto nearly 10lbs until I stopped breastfeeding (average age 2.5 years old). When I stopped the weight fell off (those were great weeks). I know some people get very skinny breastfeeding, but my body was the equivalent of a pandemic prepper

^this. If you are BF your body may well hang on hormonally to a last half stone or so. Both times my babies started really eating solids, the last half stone of baby weight suddenly fell off within 2 weeks.

Walkingtohealth · 22/05/2020 12:28

You are 9.5stone and well within a normal weight for your height THAT’S why you’re not losing weight. Likelihood is you are not even eating enough calories for your bodily needs.

ypestis · 22/05/2020 12:29

I'm trying not to judge as don't know your body shape but it sounds like you have an unhealthy relationship with weight

I think the body shape is key. I am 5ft 8 and at 10.5 stone all the fat goes straight to my belly. My legs arms and everything else stay slim and my chest stays completely flat. And then I have a completely out of proportion gut. So my healthy weight is 9.5. I have never had any issues around food. Some people just carry weight differently.

rottiemum88 · 22/05/2020 12:31

I think I need to stop eating my exercise cals, and see if that helps.

This is quite possibly your issue, how are you calculating them? Some calculators are notorious for over estimating. A good quality heart rate monitor would be better.

I'm not too far off your size (5'4" and about 8.5 stone) and I only need around 1600 calories a day to maintain my weight, so if I was to relax a bit at weekends it's really easy to gain without actually indulging that much.

Either way though, 9.5 stone at 5'6" is absolutely fine, if you're exercising and eating well I'd focus more on how you feel and if necessary how your clothes feel/fit rather than the number on the scales

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 22/05/2020 12:31

Likelihood is you are not even eating enough calories for your bodily needs.

If that were the case, she'd be losing weight. You can't run at a calorie deficit for any length of time without losing weight.

MyCatHatesEverybody · 22/05/2020 12:32

Exercise is a fantastic complement to healthy eating but is unlikely to contribute much towards weight loss - certainly not in relation to numbers on the scale. At your height and weight you need to ditch the scales and go by measurements.

Sunisshining12 · 22/05/2020 12:33

I know 9st 7 isn’t huge. But when you work out so much and don’t see results it’s depressing. And all the annoying ads that pop up on Facebook with tiny figures. They must be eating very little in reality because a ‘12 minHIT’ doesn’t make you look like that. Exercise seems to increase my appetite too which makes me eat back what I’ve burned. Of course, it’s still good for mental health & fitness. But for weight loss as opposed to maintenance, you need to eat less calories. So that can be less per day or less spread over the week. Sticking to it, that is the hard part. I haven’t mastered that. Years ago I lost 3 stone and religiously had to eat 1200 cals per day & exercise. It was miserable but got me to my goal of 8st. Maintaining that was really easy, I just ate healthy, had some treats & was active. It was a great feeling, but I don’t have the willpower or energy to do it now which is crap

shootmenow2020 · 22/05/2020 12:33

I can't believe the people telling you to cut calories while you're breastfeeding Shock

When I was breastfeeding I couldn't lose the weight no matter how much exercise I did. When I stopped (baby led weaning) the weight dropped off. Some people hold the extra weight to support milk supply and that was my experience others lose loads of weight just breastfeeding on your own.

wowfudge · 22/05/2020 12:35

Speak for yourself AwwDontGo. If the OP wants to lose weight then that's her choice. I posted that she's right in the middle of the healthy BMI range because I think it's not something she needs to stress about or beat herself up over.

PhoneLock · 22/05/2020 12:40

You are 9.5stone and well within a normal weight for your height THAT’S why you’re not losing weight.

I'm sorry but that is nonsense. Just because you are within the "normal" weight range for your height doesn't mean that you can't lose weight.

Pantheon · 22/05/2020 12:40

Hi OP, completely anecdotal but for me, eating less/better results in weight loss, and exercise results in being fitter/more toned. So I'd look at portion sizes, amount of sugar in your diet, and maybe sleep if you're not getting enough.

Eckhart · 22/05/2020 12:41

Nicelegs

'Its muscle

Unlikely. Building muscle that will impact on your weight takes (a) consistent effort over a lengthy time period and (b) very heavy weights.

Women do not build significant muscle without really aiming to do so.'

OP is weight training for strength 3 times a week. That would build significant muscle.

I wish people would stop invalidating OP. She's got room to lose a few pounds and stay within the healthy weight range. She's said she just wants to tone up a bit. 'You don't need to lose weight' is irrelevant. OP wants to, and can healthily do so. It's her body. Wanting it to look how she wants it to look and aiming for that is healthy.

Sunisshining12 · 22/05/2020 12:42

You can have a healthy bmi but still be podgey - I am. I think it depends on your shape. I’m a healthy bmi size 10/12. But I want to be an 8/10. Maybe OP feels the same. I’d never wear a bikini my belly is huge!

I didn’t diet whilst BF but only bf for 6 months. I don’t think it would harm if her child is 18 months old they won’t be solely relying on the milk, I may be wrong? BF did make me eat more though!

ThereIsIron · 22/05/2020 12:43

Exercise doesn't make you lose weight, nor do diets. Just watch your daily food intake.

PhoneLock · 22/05/2020 12:43

The OP shouldn't lose any more weight because she's already lighter than a lot of other posters and they don't like it.

unappreciativeoh · 22/05/2020 12:43

What’s the point of exercising and dieting to lose weight then eating the exercise calories back?! You may as well not do it. Of course you’ll be fitter but that’s not your goal OP.

You’ll probably be surprised how many calories you’re actually consuming if you’re eating up to 1500 five days per week then relaxing things at the weekend. I bet those weekend calories are adding up.

Freetodowhatiwant · 22/05/2020 12:47

I was about to add to the few voices of those unfortunate few of us who hold onto weight when breastfeeding. I bf twice for a year each and it was only when I stopped that I was able to lose weight. But like a lot of people have said at 5.6 and 9 stone 5 you don’t need to lose weight. Just keep up the exercise as it will mean you’re healthy and strong and try not to worry about the scales. I’m trying to lose a stone to her back to 9 stone 5 at around the same height and when my BMI is in the healthy range.

Eckhart · 22/05/2020 12:47

Exercise doesn't make you lose weight, nor do diets. Just watch your daily food intake

A diet IS watching your daily food intake.

How on earth have you concluded that exercise doesn't make you lose weight?

Dozer · 22/05/2020 12:49

“You can’t outrun your fork”.

Your calorie counting is probably incorrect.

ArtieFufkinPolymerRecords · 22/05/2020 12:52

You don't need to lose any weight.

What a ridiculous statement to make, especially as the OP hadn't even given her height when you said it.

I'm the same height and looked ill at 9 st 10lb, I had an eating disorder when I weighed that. I'm trying not to judge as don't know your body shape but it sounds like you have an unhealthy relationship with weight.

Well that is right in the middle of the healthy weight range for a woman of 5' 6", so it is not particularly light and plenty of people will be fine at that weight and certainly not have an eating disorder.

Also those saying the OP doesn't need to lose weight at 9 st 6 lbs because it's within the healthy range for her height, again it might not be unhealthy but it might not be the ideal weight for her body. She hasn't said she wants to be 8st, but it may be that she feels best at 8.5 or 9 stone, which are still within the healthy range for her height.

I'm 5' 4" and the top healthy weight for my height is almost 10.5 stone, but I have never weighed anywhere near that except towards the end of pregnancy and would feel really uncomfortable and would be carrying a lot of surplus fat (or become seriously muscular) if I weighed that, but for another person they could look and feel great at that weight.

Sunisshining12 · 22/05/2020 12:53

I think some people ‘eat back’ the exercise calories as it’s a way of having treats but still losing weight. Especially if you have to eat 1200 cals. You can work out and have a 100 cal treat for example. Not saying that it’s good or bad as I don’t really know

Sciurus83 · 22/05/2020 12:54

You're the same height and weight as me, perfectly healthy BMI and I consider myself a slim person. Do you really need to lose weight? You sounds just fine, more exercise and healthy eating for health and strength is a good thing, but it doesn't sound like you need to lose anything. I've found practicing a dynamic yoga three times a week has helped with toning in a way other exercise hasn't, maybe try that?

1moreRep · 22/05/2020 12:55

don't listen to mfp regarding excersize burnt calories, listen to james smith podcast and take progress photos

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 22/05/2020 12:58

OP is weight training for strength 3 times a week. That would build significant muscle.

Well, it depends on how long she's being doing it and how heavy she lifts. It's really tough to add muscle as a woman; you really have to put the work in Blush

I assume that the second part wasn't aimed at me. If the OP wishes to lose a bit of weight, it's not my job to advise otherwise (unless I see serious consequences, which I don't).
