To ask why I’m not loosing weight with all the excercise I’m doing?!

So I excercise 6 days per week and eat healthy 5 days per week!

I do 3 days of weight and strength training
2 days of running, generally about 7k each time
1 day of yoga for 60 minutes

I track via MFP and generally have about between 1300 and 1500 cals per day

On the weekend I relax the cal counting but don’t binge

I am still breast feeding my 2 year old and she feeds multiple times per day and throughout the night

I weigh 9 and a half stone

Your BMI is around 21 and well within the healthy range.

If you are breastfeeding you should be eating at least 1500 cals, although with a 2 year old it probably doesn't matter unless it's still their main source of nutrition (which at 2 it shouldn't be).

Incidentally I lost a stone with very little effort once I stopped breastfeeding (at 19 months ish) Don't know if it was retained fluid, a hormone thing, eating constantly due to tiredness or just the disappearance of weighty breasts but breastfeeding definitely made me porky.

When I was dieting, running and doing PT weight sessions 3x a week I had to eat more to lose weight. I increased my calories from 1400ish to 1800 and started to lose again.

Endorphins · 22/05/2020 11:50

Thank you all, some really good advice. I think I need to step away from the scales, and just try and remain health rather than fixation on a number Sad

A 1cm square cube of muscle will weigh more than a 1cm square cube of fat.

Yes, but that just means muscle is more dense.

A kilo is a kilo whether it's made up of fat, steel, muscle or feathers. A kilo of feathers will just take up more space.

MrsRogerLima · 22/05/2020 11:57

I do love it when someone shows their ignorance whilst taking the piss out of others.

😂

ivykaty44 · 22/05/2020 11:58

when you state you eat healthy, what does that consist of?it maybe healthy but you maybe eating to much

Namechange2020onceagain · 22/05/2020 12:00

By volume muscle weighs more than fat.

Obviously a kilo is a kilo whatever it is, that is not what I said.

Eckhart · 22/05/2020 12:04

@MrsRogerLima You were wrong.

@Riddlediddle You were right.

OP, you may be changing your body composition. You could weigh the same, but be more muscle and less fat, now. You are working at cross purposes. If you are weight training, do you expect the muscle you gain not to weigh anything? Building muscle means gaining weight.

Do you want to build muscle (for which you will need more calories) or do you want to lose lbs (for which you will need less calories)?

You can build muscle and drop fat at the same time, but you need to use different measures to track your progress for this. Weight isn't relevant. You could use calipers to measure your body fat, they're quite cheap and it's easy to do. You can get body composition scales. They're not very accurate but they can give you a rough idea.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 22/05/2020 12:06

I have a lot of excess skin from having 4 pregnancies and no amount of excercise will Shift that as I need a tummy tuck!

What is your definition of “need”? You have borne your lovely children and that has taken a toll on your body. You do not need to undergo surgery to remove the evidence of that. By all means get healthy, fit and strong, but please don’t go down the route of thinking that unless your body looks the same as a 20 year old Instagrammer it’s of no value. Some excess skin is totally normal, and anyone who would judge a woman for having it (including yourself) and expect her to undergo a general anaesthetic and surgery, which carry risks to your life, is totally missing the point of parenthood. Being here for the children you created is more important than risking your life and health for a flat stomach.

VanGoghsDog · 22/05/2020 12:07

I think I need to stop eating my exercise cals, and see if that helps

So, you're eating way more than the 1,200 to 1,500 calories then, that number is the net?

Yes, you need to reduce calories.

Not that you actually need to lose weight at all.

Lolapusht · 22/05/2020 12:09

OP, try and measure body fat instead of weight. As PP said, measure your body and take photographs. Weigh yourself once a week at roughly the same time/set of circumstances eg in the morning after a shower etc. I’ve been “trying to lose weight” for about 4 weeks. Weight has stayed about the same but I’ve lost 2% body fat. It actually seems really difficult to accurately find out how much you actually weigh. Much better to go on how you look and more importantly, how you feel. If you constantly check how much you weigh it may demoralise you because the number doesn’t change when you are actually getting healthier.

UntamedWisteria · 22/05/2020 12:09

Stealth boast, or what?

wowfudge · 22/05/2020 12:13

You are slap bang in the middle of the healthy weight range for your height as far as your BMI is concerned.

Anon22 · 22/05/2020 12:13

You've answered your own question:

Q: To ask why I’m not loosing weight with all the excercise I’m doing?!

A: I think I need to stop eating my exercise cals, and see if that helps.

Wintershit5 · 22/05/2020 12:14

Riddlediddle

Does a kg of feathers weigh the same as a kg of rocks?

Fucking 'muscle weighs more than fat' give your head a wobble.

I agree but do you really need to say.... give your head a wobble.... Give me strength, I HATE it and its got to be in a list of our hated words

Apart from that, your light enough!!
you won't rid your stomach as you say its baby belly and likely there to stay.
Your calories and exercise should mean you are losing a lot of weight I would say, your probably going too far as such and your body has reached its plateau as such

Notcontent · 22/05/2020 12:14

As others have said, exercise is really important but that amount of exercise will not make you lose weight. To lose weight you need to significantly reduce your calorie intake so that your body starts using the reserves...

AwwDontGo · 22/05/2020 12:16

I’m a couple of pounds heavier than you and I have extra fat. MN often thinks there is something wrong with losing weight unless you are very overweight. At 5’6 you could weigh a few pounds over 8 stone and still be a healthy weigh. Some MN’s would see this as practically emancipated.

You are roughly in the middle or lower middle of your BMI healthy range so there is nothing wrong with losing a few more pounds if you want to.
I love it when I’m in the lower end of my BMI healthy range. I feel great and I like how I look.

I use MyFitnessPal and I never include excessive calories. If you cut your calories you Will almost certainly lose weight.

I would aim to do it very slowly though. I generally aim for a mere half a pound a week. Then I don’t feel hungry and I can still enjoy my food.

I would chose the level of calories based on how much you are losing. Maybe start at 1500 for a week and see what happens. Then adjust up or down as needed.

I lose about a half pound a week on 1300-1500 a week with moderate exercise.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 22/05/2020 12:16

Breastfeeding.
When I’m breastfeeding my body literally seems to hold onto every bit of fat possible.

Even when I was running 50km a week I literally lost nothing then I’ve lost 10kg over 3 months doing half the amount once I stop feeding.

crimsonlake · 22/05/2020 12:17

I breast fed for 12 months and never lost any weight whatsoever.

tomhardyfan · 22/05/2020 12:18

The book that really really helped me was A pinch of nom it doesn't even feel like I'm dieting

DrCoconut · 22/05/2020 12:19

It is factually correct to say that muscle weighs more than fat because to carry out a comparison you need to be looking at the same volume of substance otherwise it's meaningless. That's what density is, a measure of the mass and therefore weight of 1m cubed of a substance. So 2 people of different body composition but the same measurements will occupy the same amount of space but the one who is very muscular will weigh more than the one who has more fat. So you can't necessarily say that the lighter one is healthier (I know having too little fat is also bad etc which is why I say not necessarily).

Vanhi · 22/05/2020 12:23

Why the anger? The poster is correct. Muscle is more compact and heavier than fat.

I imagine the anger comes from a combination of lockdown stress and annoyance at scientific illiteracy. Muscle is more compact than fat, therefore per volume it is heavier i.e. denser. Muscle isn't heavier than fat and it's nonsense to say it is, without the qualifier 'per volume'.

Which means as PP have explained that you can lose inches whilst gaining pounds, if you lose fat and gain muscle.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 22/05/2020 12:23

Its muscle

Unlikely. Building muscle that will impact on your weight takes (a) consistent effort over a lengthy time period and (b) very heavy weights.

Women do not build significant muscle without really aiming to do so.

Kraejka · 22/05/2020 12:24

No need to lose weight. You are a healthy weight for your height.
Continue what you are dong to maintain the weight you are at.

Sunisshining12 · 22/05/2020 12:25

I could have written this myself. Work out 6 days. Eat healthily. But still 9st 7 with a huge belly! Was 8st before kids. I’m 5ft 3. Exercised for over a year now. Tried sticking to 1200 calories but always end up binging or giving in after a couple of weeks!
