"Get them up there, girls"

Am I being unreasonable to loathe this advert.

I find it so cringeworthy, I am now turning to a different channel to avoid it. But I wasn't quick enough this time, and yet another "get them up there, girls" has launched itself at me. I think I actually find it embarrassing and I am not sure when I was last embarrassed by something.

Urghhh.

Yes - I am unreasonable to loathe it
No - I am not unreasonable to loathe it

We dont need yelling at thanks..

Exactly. I have to mute that ad. Ugh.

SarahTancredi · 22/05/2020 00:02

I try to understand the fierce feminism stance as much as I can but if we want to get all technical and pedantic about it then girls is actually not the correct noun to use since periods are progression into womanhood

That's such an.old fashioned view. Periods can start at 9. Hardly anywhere near womanhood and many teens still way off adulthood will be using them.

SpillTheTeaa · 22/05/2020 00:08

It's a ridiculous advert and makes me want to shove the tampon up her nostrils.

saleorbouy · 22/05/2020 00:09

Horrible advert and awful to sit through when sat with males and teens. A bit of discretion at the Ad agency would e good. Perhaps your poll overwhelmingly showing its loathed might get 8t removed as an ad campaign.Grin

Drysnitchinsbitchin · 22/05/2020 00:21

Reminds me of school where you were frowned upon for using "mucky shove-ups" but with Melanie Sykes shouting it.

Shatandfattered · 22/05/2020 00:25

@SarahTancredi I think I've articulated my point wrongly. As a matter of fact, as I type I've realised it's a crossover of two matters in my mind... The word "girls" was a widely discussed topic when I was studying health care and it was largely recognised as a term used as a juvenilasation of women, particularly in professional and intellectual environments. The term girls provokes an immature, naive and giggly portrayal whereas woman demands more respect (huge generalisation of course but apparently statistics reflect this opinion to be most common).
The comment I originally referred to I assume was in regards to recent matters surrounding the trans world and antagonistic events about periods, which I said I eyerolled at. To repeat, I try to understand the fierce stance of feminism and tackling matters but to be entirely honest I only know about these "situations" because of feminists bringing it up in every conversation relatable. I realise as I type this that I sound entirely anti-feminist (I assure you I am not) but I'm having a hard time wording my viewpoint clearly and I'm sounding like a bit of a tit Blush hope it's taken the way it's supposed to sound

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 22/05/2020 00:41

I'm not actually sure what doesn't sit right with me because I'm all about being open with conversations about sex, bodies etc but periods are a chat to be had by females with other females in the correct environment*

Sorry, but how would that even work if you're a single Dad?

JudyCoolibar · 22/05/2020 00:46

I struggle to understand the whole creative process that led to that. Presumably some keen advertising exec came up with the idea, solemnly presented it to the clients who approved it, and they then went off and put the whole script, scenery, graphics etc together, probably having several meetings around that. And at no point, presumably, did someone say "You know what, this is bloody awful, let's forget the whole stupid idea."

And then there's the filming process. I know actors are fairly desperate, but surely those two absolutely cringed when they realised what they had to do and that their friends and relatives were going to have numerous opportunities to be subjected to the full horror of it?

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 22/05/2020 00:50

It's like a particularly cringe-worthy outcome of the advertising task on The Apprentice.

SarahTancredi · 22/05/2020 01:03

Dont sweat it shat it is indeed late and tone is always hard to read. When I read it it just made me think of all those girls where indeed menstruating is a time where they are married off or those utterly vile " old enough to bleed old enough to breed" comments come out and of course the ignorance that there used to be and hey maybe there still is , where tampon use is forbidden as it was believed they meant you weren't still a virgin. They were always only something married women used and its obviously vital that they are still seen as children and their choice of san pro is not a sign if any impending lack of morals etc

If that makes any sense at all.

I'll join you in sounding like a twit Grin

Shatandfattered · 22/05/2020 01:07

@LemonadeAndDaisyChains I agree completely, as I've just said to DP I can see me getting my backside handed to me over the way I've said what I've said but I'm willing to hear that. You're point is entirely valid. I think my view is skewed because my childhood best friend was raised by her single father and he wasn't very present for such things. Instead, she came to me as I was slightly older, or relied on aunts for buying products and explaining certain things. For the most part I think she just dealt with things and learnt on her own which is quite sad to think back on. I'd hate for my daughter to not feel comfortable approaching her parents with sensitive issues but I guess I've unwittingly had a sexist view instilled in me where ive grown to assume she will approach me and not her father. I'm actually glad I wrote things the way I did and had you reply raising this because I need to consciously find a way to make sure she's comfortable talking to her dad as well. We don't know what's round the corner so god forbid if I'm not here she should feel secure regardless. Thank you for pointing out my biased thinking, I appreciate it!

22Giraffes · 22/05/2020 01:08

Is this the ad where they say "Not just the tip"? YANBU it's awful 🤢

biglouis · 22/05/2020 01:09

The entire business of periods, tampons etc is pretty yucky and sickening so do we have to attempt to glamorise it with humour?

SarahTancredi · 22/05/2020 01:15

It's not really all that yucky. There are just large companies really invested in making you think it's so gross and disgusting we need perfumes in pads and omg just take it off/take it out and flush it/bin it never to be seen again.

Whilst simultaneously taking the glory for campaigns to try and make it look like they dont need us to carry on thinking it's so gross so we buy their ever increasing range if products to make us itch and smell like car air freshener.

Hmm Meh, are you 5 lol? I hope my two (teen and tween) don't see as "yucky!"It's a fact of life.

It's like one of the awful adverts they make on The Apprentice! I'd love to see Alan critiquing it.

FenellaVelour · 22/05/2020 01:34

Is this the ad where they say "Not just the tip"?

Yes 🤢🤢🤢

1forAll74 · 22/05/2020 02:15

Yes it's a bit of a crappy ad, but it doesn't bother me. as there are loads of crap ads. I am always wondering what types of numpty idiots make these stupid, cringey, and nonsense ads. I only like ads, that feature dogs, and cats. !! Like the one with the cat and dog drinking tea on the sofa.!

TheVamoosh · 22/05/2020 03:14

Sounds pretty gross, but I do remember a friend of mine telling me some years ago that she had thought she was supposed to leave the plastic applicator in and didn't understand why it was so uncomfortable! Fine if you're 14, but she was an otherwise intelligent woman of 28! 😳

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 22/05/2020 04:19

YANBU

I thought it was me being old but its obviously not
It just sounds what we would call vulgar . Not keen on the ad so YANBU at all

AnxiousAnnie13 · 22/05/2020 06:17

I don't find it particularly crude, but I do hate it. The concept (why are they on a chat show??), the acting, and the weird "do it for comfort" line at the end are all awful.

Thehop · 22/05/2020 06:23

It’s a horrible advert. But I’m on cycle 3 with a cup so I’m no longer their target market 😂

firstimemamma · 22/05/2020 06:24

Yanbu, it's a cringe-worthy advert. I hate it too. What were they thinking?!

saleorbouy · 22/05/2020 06:26

Shame your friend didn't read the introductions provided in the box and on the product website TheVamoosh. I though it was a male thing to muddle through without reading instructions. 😀

Bananabixfloof · 22/05/2020 06:34

Sorry, but how would that even work if you're a single Dad

What because single dad absolutely no women anywhere in childs life? Not even a teacher, aunt, grandmother on either side of the family. Just because someone is a single parent doesn't mean the other parents family dont exist.

Yes probably there is a child out there who has not one woman in her life, but its unlikely.
