To want to know more about Amazon UK and it's defunding or otherwise of Mumsnet?

I saw (via twitter) that a spokesperson for audible has made some unpleasant remarks about MN users and they have pulled their MN advertising after complaints from "trans activists" that MN is a hive of "transphobic bigots" so I have cancelled my audible subscription because I find MN enormously supportive and I don't want to support a company that vows so readily to the "born in the wrong body- men are women if they say so" cult.
No clear response has come from Amazon itself in this matter. Does anyone know what their position is? TIa

they’re not wrong that transphobia is completely rampant on MN.

Yes they are. It's interesting as ever that the people making this claim are completely unable to substantiate it.

The smallest degree of questioning surrounding TRA ideology is elsewhere denounced as transphobia and shut down before serious conversation can even take place. What differentiates Mumsnet is that legitimate discussion surrounding the rights and autonomy of women, the very definition of women, the permanent medical alteration of mere children and other related questions are given a platform for discussion that should be an integral part of free speech everywhere else.

It's the fact that this isn't the case that should be causing people to sit up. If you want to make accusations of any form of 'phobia', best to look first at who is trying to silence who.

I had missed this OP.
Thanks for flagging it up. Perhaps if we all ask Amazon on Twitter, they will clarify their position.

Apologies 12boo

Didn’t answer your question

Ive no idea re Amazon I’m afraid

Moondust001 · 21/05/2020 22:15

Mumsnet has 12 million users, many of whom have enough disposable income to spend quite a bit on Audible and Amazon.

And many of whom do, and will continue to do so regardless of what Mumsnetters think. Amazon has 150 million Prime members worldwide. Probably at least as many if not more of customers who don't subscribe to Prime. And they aren't sending out appeals to their customers to join a premium service so they don't end up bankrupt. I'm not remotely a fan of Amazon, but it's laughable that they care two hoots about Mumsnet or a few possible lost purchases from it. Demand what you want - they'll continue to ignore you.

Mucklowe · 21/05/2020 22:22

As ever, nobody claiming transphobia can ever come up with an example. Plus ça change!

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 21/05/2020 22:29

Ive seen transphobic posts

And ive reported said transphobic posts

And they’ve been deleted...a few times they’ve been said by ploppers or stirrers looking for screenshots

Lordfrontpaw · 22/05/2020 08:16

I’ve also seen some offensive posts on allllll topics. So some are more no-no than others?

Some ‘offence’ is pointing out a fact, some is making a threat/racist/misogynistic comment.

Some people - gosh gee - most come on to shit stir and take a screen shot to post on twitter as ‘evidence’

tilder · 22/05/2020 08:22

I think it depends on your definition of transphobia. I do not consider myself transphobic. Equally, I do not believe TWAW. They are transwomen. Equally valid but different.

Interesting to see which way the insults are flying.

Lordfrontpaw · 22/05/2020 08:35

And yet you used that particular which has been defined as hate speech and abusive - and you know that of course.

And yet it’s fine you you to use it? But to make a comment that some groups won’t listen to (So the post above you) and generally react in an aggressive and violent way, and it’s another matter, eh?

Well done.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2020 08:35

Examples, @lubeybooby? They're sadly lacking on this thread so far. Almost as if Mumsnet has already deleted any offensive stuff as soon as it was reported.

NekoShiro · 22/05/2020 08:35

Audible doesn't need to advertise to people who already know what it is, a lot of people on here read, it's the biggest audio book website and is advertised everywhere, I don't think they mind pulling adverts from some random forum full of people foaming at the mouth over something every day

Lordfrontpaw · 22/05/2020 08:39

Have you been on twitter? Is disagreeing with a company’s politics or policies ‘frothing’?

So you don’t have a line for your principles?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2020 08:41

In the months to come a lot of people are going to tighten their belts. Advertising is going to be key in persuading/influencing people where they spend what cash they have. If marketing people have data that shows Mumsnet is a good place to advertise to entice people in, they'll continue to advertise here.

I hope Arla's seeing a boost as a result of its refusal to drop advertising here after a pile on on Twitter. I bought Castello cheese recently for the first time as a result of seeing people mention it here. It's lovely and I will get it again.

FOJN · 22/05/2020 08:41

And on the FWR boards a post would get deleted for referring to women as t**fs because it's derogatory and inaccurate.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/05/2020 08:44

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I am another who started using Arla products as a result of their stand against TRA bullying - their yoghurt is amazing and they are a farmer owned company with a commitment to sustainability so win win as far as I'm concerned

megletthesecond · 22/05/2020 08:46

I practically live on here but in all my time I think I've only seen one nasty transphobic post (that someone else had already reported for deletion moments before).Everything else has been pro women and girls not to anti trans.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2020 08:46

Yes, Chrysanthemum5, I hadn't appreciated that they were a co-op before. Definitely worth supporting in these straitened times.

FTMF30 · 22/05/2020 08:46

Amazon can hardly point a finger. They are terrible in many ways a d very hypocritical to talk about transphobia whem they sell books like this www.amazon.co.uk/Destroy-All-Niggers-Nikolaus-Collins/dp/1983127701/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr2_2?dchild=1&keywords=ten+little+nigger+boys&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1590133519&sr=8-2-fkmr2

Lordfrontpaw · 22/05/2020 08:51

We switched to arla too - I thought there would be some ‘what is this - why is the sell by so long?’ But I got ‘ooh that’s a good idea’. So not we use it at home (and will do at work when we get back there).

Booboostwo · 22/05/2020 08:51

Amazon is a horribly unethical company and hardly a bastion of human rights, but they’re not wrong that transphobia is completely rampant on MN

Plenty of transphobic threads on MN, although HQ are better at containing them in the Feminist boards now. I have tried posting an opposing view on such threads to have posters literally advise others to completely ignore me. The Feminist boards on here are just an echo room of hatred, that don't represent anything about feminism.

GruntledOne · 22/05/2020 08:53

If it's rampant you should be able to find a proper example of it. Then we can report it and MN can remove it, as transphobic content goes against the guidelines

Here's a thought: maybe people can't respond to your august demands because the comments in question have indeed been reported and removed. I've certainly reported quite a few which have been zapped.

Lordfrontpaw · 22/05/2020 08:53

That’s a pretty sweeping statement.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/05/2020 08:55

Well, this is your opportunity, @Booboostwo, you're not on FWR now. Do please explain where the hate is in pointing out that child safeguarding is important and that women's sex-based rights are being eroded.
