I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

It is the same on the west coast. I'm near Blackpool and it is heaving here too with no facilities open and the local hospital having warned against complacency as they are still seeing and admitting significant numbers of new patients
I know we are lucky to live by beautiful beaches but Blackpool is particularly deprived and it is sad when residents without gardens are trapped indoors by irresponsible visitors who do not socially distance

Wait for next week, it's half term!

...hardly anyone is in school now anyway.

dancinguser · 20/05/2020 18:32

Saw an article earlier with a video of a woman saying she and her family had travelled from Manchester to Southend as they were fed up of just going in the garden and the beach is nicer than Blackpool's Hmm

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 18:32

How does he impose a limit on internal travel when we don't have one on international? How does that work? Confused
And with people going back to work. Some of them might commute into a different area. Non Locals coming into an area .

clareykb · 20/05/2020 18:33

Tableclothing we live near you and were at cullercoats this morning it was quiet when we arrived (8:45) but filling up when we left at 11 Ish but most people were being sensible. I didn't see many big groups or people getting in each others way although the tide was very low so there was a lot of beach!

DominaShantotto · 20/05/2020 18:35

Why the fuck would anyone sit in Essex, with coastline near them and think, "I know, lets go Skeggy for the day"

Try harder.

By the way - I live in the Midlands. My car was originally registered in Glasgow I think it was - fail on that plan as well.

Reallynowdear · 20/05/2020 18:36

OP, I don't know what the answer is but YANBU.

Lostvoiced · 20/05/2020 18:38

YANBU.

Why the fuck is anyone going to the seaside in a pandemic?

jackdawdawn · 20/05/2020 18:39

Not sure what kind of couple/family would head out for the day knowing that no toilets were open anywhere.

Some selfish men don't care, for obvious reasons, but what woman in her right mind would go along with an idiot like that?

HermioneWeasley · 20/05/2020 18:39

Public toilets should be open if people are allowed to travel. It’s petty as fuck to keep them closed.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:42

..hardly anyone is in school now anyway.

a LOT of children are still being home schooled. Many posters might post because they are struggling, but that's 1 or 2 in a class, the 20 other families who are working hard are not posting about it.

Nubbin · 20/05/2020 18:42

Why would you go to Skegness from Essex - Southend, Leigh, Frinton, Walton neater and nicer??

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:42

It’s petty as fuck to keep them closed.

maybe people should engage brain, and realise their destination is not suitable..

SusieOwl4 · 20/05/2020 18:43

@Thisseatisnotavailable

On the tv adverts it clearly says check that places are open . And stay at home most of the time .

I think his only mistake was thinking that people have the intelligence to think that places will be crowded with no toilets or cafes and just drive a sensible distance for a run or walk .

To blame this on Boris when they explain the reasons every bloody day and repeat the guidelines is actually ridiculous.

If you are thick enough to crap in public you are thick enough to ignore the guidelines because you are selfish .

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/05/2020 18:44

Southend has been packed too today by all accounts.

The government were wrong to think that the public would police themselves. Anyone with a modicum of sense realises that just because we can doesn't mean we should. What next when this blows up again? Either we all go back into lockdown, with all the hardship that entails, or government can't afford to do it and we have to muddle through best way we can with however many people dying as a result.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/05/2020 18:44

Most people don't KNOW the toilets aren't open - they assume if it's ok to go there will be facilities

People just don't understand its not safe to open toilets - it's just safe to be OUTSIDE 2 metres away from people

Clymene · 20/05/2020 18:45

This is the government guidance on what councils should put in place before they open public toilets:

"Guidance from government yesterday (May 13) says public places, such as toilets, should have
â–ª sufficient provision of automated hand sanitising dispensers in public places
â–ª where possible, providing hand towels as an alternative to hand dryers in handwashing facilities.
â–ª using signs and messages to build awareness of good handwashing technique and other respiratory hygiene behaviours, e.g. around coughing and sneezing in public places
â–ª configuration of toilet facilities to ensure they are kept clean, with social distancing achieved as far as possible and with best practice handwashing followed
â–ª minimising use of portable toilets
â–ª enhanced cleaning for facilities that are heavily used"

In less than a week, you expect local councils to have put that in place? Hmm

Here's an idea. Don't spend the day somewhere where there are no public toilets open.

Our beach stinks of piss and there's shit and rubbish everywhere. People are disgusting.

SusieOwl4 · 20/05/2020 18:45

@HermioneWeasley

So who is going to stand there cleaning them after every use ?
And wiping the door handles
Because if people are not socially distancing and not using their common sense I bet they are not washing their hands either .

Rose1605 · 20/05/2020 18:46

The problem with toilets is not just the surfaces but the aerosol generated by flushing, if the lid isn’t down. Probably best not to use public toilets at the moment if you can avoid it even if they are open (or at least wait a couple of minutes before you go in after the last user).

SusieOwl4 · 20/05/2020 18:46

Sorry Boris a lot of your population are disgusting imbeciles so reverse the freedom .

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 20/05/2020 18:47

You can't blame everything on gov though.
"They said it's ok to drive somewhere" doesn't mean you will go to a beach on hottest day.

The attitude of Brits is baffling. On one hand everyone blows their lid about police state and nanny state when they are told what to do or not do, on the other hand if they are supposed to exercise common sense, they moan gov didn't tell them what EXACTLY should they be doingConfused

pudcat · 20/05/2020 18:48

This was the queue for the 1disabled lol in Skegness today

Seadide stupidly busy
Kelsoooo · 20/05/2020 18:48

@herecomesthesun why are you spouting utter tosh? You're driving license has to be registered to your address, nothing else. Otherwise how do company cars work?

DH and I both have a company car, insured by the company, leased by the company. The lessor doesn't even know which member of staff is driving the car, much less where we live. So when an ANPR camera reads me....it shows the lessor address, not even my company.

SusieOwl4 · 20/05/2020 18:48

@LaurieFairyCake

Sorry I don’t believe that , it was mentioned in lots of reports last week and in lots of newspaper articles .

Not that I am reading them at the moment because they are doing my head in .

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/05/2020 18:50

well of course it was busy, what were you expecting?
you are not in a bubble, it is a pandemic, with an awful lot of people on furlough.
lucky people are travelling like they are on holiday.
sucks for those of us that still have to go to work, or those who dont have access to a car.
it wont last forever
