Seadide stupidly busy

I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

Perhaps the seaside shops should start selling adult nappies alongside the bucket and spades.

chocolicious · 20/05/2020 17:56

I live near a popular beach and take a walk along the promenade several times a week(within easy walking distance of my home). It was busy when I was there this morning with loads of families on the beach having picnics,in the water and out in an inflatable dinghy.I saw a photo taken this afternoon and it was rammed with people. We're still not allowed to go out and picnic etc(Scotland).People just don't care about social distancing.Given the amount of kit and stuff some people had with them on the beach there's no way everyone was local and had walked there.

LakieLady · 20/05/2020 18:01

Professional cleaners get danger money for public loos, excrement and urine central

They need danger money for the one near the station where I live. I doubt if anyone uses it for its intended purpose, it's used as a shooting gallery by the local junkies and a dead body was found in there a few months ago.

This is in a "naice" genteel town, all Seasalt and Waitrose type people. Except for the junkies.

vanillandhoney · 20/05/2020 18:01

These people are following goverment guidelines

Are they? I must have missed the bit where Boris said it was fine to shit on the beach.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 20/05/2020 18:01

OK solution might be to restrict travel for beach/walking etc to say 25 miles from main address...

One possibility

Roads in Devon were blocked/huge queues of people attempting all to get to the beach. Unfortunately no facilities open/no toilets. Car parks were full and so had to shut and turn people away. Normally lots of these people would be working but since furloughed or WFH all decided today was a great day to all visit the same beaches/parks etc. Local infrastructure cannot cope with it.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 20/05/2020 18:01

I get You @mummydoris2006

I am also under ELDC and live in a tourist spot, They couldn't have made it more clear that nothing is open and do not visit, yet here we are.

The selfishness of some people astound me, I have seen the pics posted of the 40 min queue for the one disabled toilet open in Skeg and it is just disgusting.

There is no fixing selfish and stupid.

That's great in theory and I agree, but the policing and enforcement of it would be horrendous.

Weallhavevalidopinions · 20/05/2020 18:04

Maybe the government are going for herd immunity again and hoping the number of cases rise again? Hence be deliberately vague with the
"Stay Alert" message and you can travel further for exercise etc etc etc .... after all we cannot blame anyone then

Gizlotsmum · 20/05/2020 18:07

See i love the coast, could be there in under an hour but have chosen not too as everyone else will be.. The coast will still be there later in the year...

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:08

It would be so hard to enforce distance. The police would have spot check all cars, check documents, and issue huge fines. The fines would have to be massive for it to be an effective deterrent.

other countries manage very well. I think France was using army and customs to assist the police to make up the numbers.

The economy is shot, we could do with a few fines to boost it up.

VickyEadieofThigh · 20/05/2020 18:08

I live in a very small East Yorkshire seaside town and my house is 400m from the beach. We're avoiding the front entirely precisely because we know it's swarming with visitors.

Seafront toilets ARE open here, however, so we hope there's no crapping on the beach going on.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:09

Wait for next week, it's half term!

It's going to be horrendous for the locals of desirable areas...

MH1111 · 20/05/2020 18:09

So what if lots of people are going to beaches? As long as they’re not in a high risk group what’s the problem?

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:10

MH1111
did you read the thread? Because many have no respect for the locals or social distancing and put crap absolutely everywhere.

1forsorrow · 20/05/2020 18:12

They should open the toilets, I live in a seaside town in South Devon and our carparks are open and I believe some toilets are open. It was only too obvious that if they didn't open the toilets there would be people going al fresco.

SusieOwl4 · 20/05/2020 18:12

I don’t see why people just don’t have common sense .

Everyone was saying if you lived in a flat without green space then you needed to further for excercise . And it was important for MH . So they grant it and now you are blaming him for idiots who just don’t have common sense . And then publicly defecate .

I think some people don’t have brain cells at all .

NameChange84 · 20/05/2020 18:13

I live in a tourist hotspot. It’s ridiculous today, it looks like the school holidays. Gave up trying to walk as it was impossible to social distance. Cocktail bars were serving, all sorts of restaurants with massive queues, ice cream parlours etc. No police presence. Saw around 1000 people, not a single one wearing a mask (if you don’t include me).

I wish they’d set up road blocks for coming off the motorway to these tourist destinations or issue some sort of permit.

ismellamouse · 20/05/2020 18:13

YABU. The councils should have reopened public toilets - there is no reason for them still to be closed now people are allowed to go to the beach. It is not the council's decision to make as to who can go to the seaside, they are normally happy enough to charge visitors astronomical amounts for parking.
Cleaners normally wear gloves anyway, and they can close toilets while they are actually being cleaned so social distancing is maintained - a very low risk of anyone catching anything.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:14

they probably hope that confirming that facilities - including toilets- were not available would be a deterrent for reasonable people. Things are not "normal" and the country is not opened.

They simply forgot that the average person is selfish and thick as a plank.

LakieLady · 20/05/2020 18:14

Not sure if the shitting in the rock pool or pissing in the sheep's water trough is worse. Both disgusting

Shitting in the rock pool is definitely worse. Imagine some child dipping their fishing net in a rock pool and catching a turd!

Pissing in a sheep trough is vile, but at least it's liquid and will be considerable diluted, and people don't generally paddle in cattle troughs.

Nottherealslimshady · 20/05/2020 18:15

They should have extended the distance you could travel and every driver should have their licence to check where you've come from. Say 30 miles from your home.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 20/05/2020 18:16

I have my own take on this..sounds barmy but hear me out! I think genuinely think that by lifting the beaches route that was taken and being able to travel by car distanes previously not allowed that the government are doing sort of a back door experiment.By this I mean they know the infection rate could possibly rise so they are testing it out to see how bad it could get before they lift general lockdown measures. This is aback door way of measuring rates and the people who are daft enough to go are being used as guinea pigs and information for the wider planning of society. This might sound stupid but what better way to test how the virus performs than by usung idiots with no sense heading to the beaches and towns? It makes sense to me anyway. For the record we here are till staying at home...

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 18:19

swarming with visitors
The horror! Somebody living more than 25 miles away on 'your' turf. How dare they!
I can't begin to imagine what you'd think if you lived in a city with an airport. Spontaneously combust by the sounds of it...

LakieLady · 20/05/2020 18:20

Judging by these pics, Brighton beach wasn't that busy today.

www.theargus.co.uk/news/18462616.brighton-beach-goers-soak-sun-lockdown-ease/#gallery0

Most people seem to be social distancing, if we assume that the small groups all live in the same household.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 20/05/2020 18:27

Has Boris ever explained why there's no limit? I think it's a stupid rule personally but maybe he wants domestic tourism to start reopening?

I think it is so he can blame the public when the 2nd wave hits. He's was talking sometime ago about 'the great British public using their common sense and so following Stay Alert sensibly. Well considering how they didn't manage to use their common sense when the advise was a clear stay at home I don't think they were expecting everyone to suddenly be more sensible. The second wave is going to hit hard and the government want to be able to point the blame away from themselves and what a shocking job they've been doing so far.

It was obvious this was always going to happen. I'd love to go slightly further afield than I am at the moment but I know my bladder wouldn't cope.
