Seadide stupidly busy

I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

But the gov should have said an hours travel max. It’s ridiculous. Summer is going to be utter carnage.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/05/2020 18:51

is Slegness a made up place?

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/05/2020 18:52

carnage in what way?

Inkpaperstars · 20/05/2020 18:52

I am staggered that people want to drive miles to a crowded beach and skirt around other people or poo on the beach, long queues for the few loos that are open. The great British day out.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 18:52

Most people don't KNOW the toilets aren't open - they assume if it's ok to go there will be facilities

they choose not to know - pretty much all the tourist places are clearly stressing all the info on their social media, their website and it's been in the press and pretty much everywhere.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/05/2020 18:56

Susie and One

Yes, YOU know because I'm sure you have a modicum of intelligence Grin

The average knuckle dragging twat thinks "Boris said we can go to the beach so we go to the beach"

vanillandhoney · 20/05/2020 18:56

Public toilets should be open if people are allowed to travel. It’s petty as fuck to keep them closed.

They're closed because it's impossible to keep them clean, and the councils don't want to be held responsible for anyone catching Coronavirus and blaming it on unclean facilities.

How do you keep an outdoor public toilet safe for use at a time like this? It's completely impossible. Easier to just keep them closed.

ToffeeYoghurt · 20/05/2020 18:56

the gov should have said an hours travel max.
Domestic flights only then. Perhaps Southend airport to Humberside? For any others who fancy the trip from Essex to Skegness.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/05/2020 18:56

It's not PETTY to keep them closed, it's not SAFE - it's only safe to be outside!

It's also not safe for the cleaners to go in and clean them

Walnutwhipster · 20/05/2020 18:57

My hometown is rammed today judging from social media photos. I wouldn't dare venture near the seafront. I can understand the want to be at the coast but not to be around so many other people with very few facilities open.

ITonyah · 20/05/2020 18:57

Someone turned up at our local destination spot having driven 90 minutes to get there and was outraged about how many other people were there as well and it wasn’t right, she made font page of the Metro

She's also a tiktok meme Grin

ITonyah · 20/05/2020 18:58

Public toilets should be open if people are allowed to travel. It’s petty as fuck to keep them closed

Would you want to clean them? Don't be dense!

L1eLand · 20/05/2020 18:58

Carnage in that what you see today but 100 times worse. These areas won’t cope.

Toilets are closed because they’ve got to be cleaned more, cleaners need PP, extra hours, somebody to man social distancing......

L1eLand · 20/05/2020 19:00

They really should have said an hour travelling. It’s nuts. The maj of the UK are going to be piling into these places in the summer. Local services, lanes and roads etc just won’t cope.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 20/05/2020 19:02

You look at what's happening and just think.mankind is doomed. Why do some people need to be forced to do the sensible thing? Is common sense really so scarce that people can't see the risks here?

MargotB7 · 20/05/2020 19:04

Most people I know hate the thought of going to busy beaches/parks but just want to see their family and close friends on the garden. It's shit.

LilacTree1 · 20/05/2020 19:10

Gin “ The spread of COVID-19 is inevitably going to rise again when you get people travelling 250 miles from a potentially infected area like West Midlands or London,”

Excuse me, London has the lowest number of cases.

YouTheCat · 20/05/2020 19:14

How can Johnson expect people to use common sense when he absolutely failed to use any prior to getting the virus?

PhilCornwall1 · 20/05/2020 19:21

The government were wrong to think that the public would police themselves.

Were they? Are you sure they didn't know this was going to happen. Come on why are people here acting outraged and surprised? it was obvious, anyone could see it was going to happen as soon as he made the announcement.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 20/05/2020 19:22

A common sense approach would have been "x miles from home"

I thought London had ZERO new cases ?

Inkpaperstars · 20/05/2020 19:22

How can Johnson expect people to use common sense when he absolutely failed to use any prior to getting the virus?

Maybe they could look at him and resolve not to be so stupid. It's not a race to the bottom, or at least it shouldn't be.

Inkpaperstars · 20/05/2020 19:25

You could be onto something there Phil I wondered if these people are unwittingly participating in an experiment to see how much case numbers rise while we are still way off flu season.

Soubriquet · 20/05/2020 19:26

I live near Skegness. In fact it’s our nearest sea side resort and I would have loved to go to the beach...but common sense says no.

Shocking

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2020 19:27

We went to St Anne’s today. The sea was at least a mile out so plenty of room on the beach and everyone was social distancing. We checked before we left that the toilets would be open and the queues weren’t too bad. We took a picnic lunch, bought a chippy tea and had a lovely day on the beach.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 20/05/2020 19:30

we went to the beach on monday, beautiful, not skegness, but no chippy was open Sad
