I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

I would wipe everything down before I used it. Wouldn't everyone?

Hahaha surly you can't be that naive?? 😂

herecomesthsun · 20/05/2020 17:08

The car documents have to have your current address on them (not updating this is an offence). So the police can take the number on the plate and see where is the driver's regular address.

OptimisticSix · 20/05/2020 17:09

I live in a touristy area and am just staying in entirely. There is no way people will stay in, and to be fair even if half the people in my town go to thw beach it will be packed (and thats not even allowing for tourists/holiday home owners).

mogtheexcellent · 20/05/2020 17:09

Our local fruit and veg shop closed as people kept insisting on using their toilet. They were told no but kept arguing and the owner got too stressed with all the abuse she got so it closed. Seaside town.

Even we are not going to the beach for long due to no parking and toilets and we live here so god knows what all the visitors from out of town are doing.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 20/05/2020 17:09

I saw a photo on FB earlier of the queue for the disabled loo on Skeggy front. 40 minute queue apparently, at that rate you might as well go home to use your own (unless it's in Essex!).

I live near an increasingly popular beach on the Kent coast and today has been ridiculous. We get people from London visiting in large groups, barbecues (not allowed) and parties. The beach is crammed with people who can't social distance. There are no toilets open anywhere within miles and people have parked on pavements, double yellows etc. Our beach is full of human excrement and stinks of urine. People are leaving shitty nappies in our gardens and dumping rubbish everywhere. Ironically there is a dog ban in the summer! To be fair it's bad every summer but at this time of year, I honestly just want to tell everyone to fuck off and not be so utterly selfish and stupid.

Tiramisuiloveyou · 20/05/2020 17:12

YADNBU we live within 20-40 odd miles of some absolutely gorgeous places and scenery. But we haven’t visited and have stayed walking round the same boring routes everyday as I always need a wee and after a 30 minute to an hours journey I would want a wee almost as soon as I got there and before having say an hour there and then still to have the journey home. I am menopausal and not heavily pregnant but honestly some people have an absolute cheek, sense of entitlement and absolutely no common sense.

Candodad · 20/05/2020 17:12

Of course it is busy. Some floppy haired idiot went on a TV and said take a drive to take a walk.

Sirzy · 20/05/2020 17:13

I have just seen pictures of the car park at a beach locally. It’s madness.

It may be allowed but surely if you got to somewhere at the moment and it was so obviously packed you would turn around and go home/somewhere quieter for your own safety as much as anything?

VeraorHolly · 20/05/2020 17:15

It would be so hard to enforce distance. The police would have spot check all cars, check documents, and issue huge fines. The fines would have to be massive for it to be an effective deterrent.

I can see, but not get to the sea in Wales. I do hope we loosen up, but know it is the crazy amount of tourists we'll get keeping us all locked in our houses.

BaconAndAvocado · 20/05/2020 17:15

We live near many beautiful beaches on the Kent coast and, even without Covid, I would avoid them on extremely hot days like today!

It's paddling pool in the garden for us!

notalwaysalondoner · 20/05/2020 17:16

I agree it was insane a mileage or at least time limit wasn’t imposed - of course in this weather after being cooped up for weeks people are happy to drive hours to a beach. If Boris had said you can drive up to 60 minutes/40 miles or something that would have still allowed central Londoners to get to the countryside without most beauty spots being completely packed.

notalwaysalondoner · 20/05/2020 17:17

I know it would be hard to enforce distances but (a) most people stick to legal guidelines anyway and (b) at least you’d be able to fine people etc

NamesNamesSoManyNames · 20/05/2020 17:18

Who drives from Essex to go to Skegness?!

Surely not many people. Essex has beaches just as good/shite as Skegness. Or Yarmouth is nearer. They must be mad!

Tiramisuiloveyou · 20/05/2020 17:21

Some people have absolutely no idea. A local half wit partner of a relative is cycling around all our various local beauty spots on his electric bike. He is stopping and taking selfies sitting on various benches. In one of todays shots he had a bottle of beer. Mind you he was doing that from almost the beginning of lockdown he was out on his bike for 8 hours plus a day. It would not surprised me in the least if he had a wee or a poo in somewhere other than a toilet.

DC10 · 20/05/2020 17:21

The pictures of crowded beaches are concerning. I agree completely that a distance limit should have been put in place by the government for leisure travel. I live at a small seaside town and walk my dog on the beach - lots and lots of families with school age children at the beach and quite a few in what are clearly multi-household groups. This is mid-week so presumably these parents are quite happy for their children to go back to school in June?

FuckThisWind · 20/05/2020 17:23

@Tableclothing we are MN 'neighbours' it's my birthday today and I was going to walk down to the beach as I usually do, but I've stayed in the back garden instead. Had a feeling it would be rammed!

Lordofmyflies · 20/05/2020 17:23

We’re in Cornwall. The amount of motorhomes on the road this weekend was crazy so God knows where they’re going to stay. We took our daily walk to the beach to find a man taking a dump in the rock pool. It was heaving and the council quite rightly, haven’t opened the car parks or loos. People are parking on pavements and pooping on the beach. It’s grim.

MotherWol · 20/05/2020 17:24

Help me out here - DH has been suggesting we should go to the beach this weekend, or next week midweek (it's my birthday) as it's allowed now. I'm not keen, but I can't seem to convince him. I don't want to get stopped by the police, or upset local residents, or add to congestion. It's about half an hour's drive, so not that far, but I feel if you're not close enough to walk there, you shouldn't be going. What do I do?

amber763 · 20/05/2020 17:24

If you don't like the beaches being used as toilets tell the council to open up the loos.

@LemonPudding I can't believe you're justifying people shitting on beaches!!! Is that what you'd do? Its absolutely disgusting!

Millicent10 · 20/05/2020 17:24

I took the kids to Skeggie butlins last year and was amazed at the houses. Beautiful 4/bedroom detached houses for less than 200000!

katseyes7 · 20/05/2020 17:26

l've just seen an item on the BBC tv text saying that the roads to Devon and Cornwall are packed. They're sending people back.
l really cannot imagine what people are thinking.

TAKING A DUMP IN A ROCK POOL ShockShockShock

That is so revolting

DianaT1969 · 20/05/2020 17:30

Most public outdoor spaces will be crowded today. My local park is. I imagine every city park will have a lot more people hanging around longer due to the good weather. It isn't limited to seasides. No surprise after people have stayed home so long.

queenrollo · 20/05/2020 17:30

@mummydoris2006 I live 20 miles away from Skegness (but lived and worked in the town for years) and it's always been a regular place for us to go to the beach, though mainly out of season.
I have one child who is at his other parent's about 5 miles out of town and I went to collect him today. I'm taking him back on Friday and we really want to take my youngest son up the beach but I just know it will be heaving and I don't want to add to that.

I feel like I am a 'local', my roots are in Skegness. I feel for you, I am glad I don't live there now! It's bad enough in high season when all the facilities are functioning so it must be hell at the moment.
