Seadide stupidly busy

I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

I do love the fact that someone has to pipe up blaming everyone else for antisocial and disgusting behaviour it must be exhausting!

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:21

Maybe because every town is different and has different budgets...
Use your brain

That argument doesn’t work either. Public toilets at seaside towns are always open in May, they’ve saved eight weeks cleaning costs already. They’re not being asked to do anything they don’t normally do all year round so they can’t make money an excuse.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:22

You should know since you’ve spent half the morning doing just that.

PafLeChien · 21/05/2020 12:24

I always refer to West Wittering, because according to my local Facebook groups there are no other beaches worth visiting - I have personally never been there

it's amazing if you love being stuck in traffic for hours Grin
It's clear on any map you can find that there's only a narrow road to access the area, but people are horrified every single year that they get stuck for hours - it makes for every entertaining reading.

The best I have seen so far was people in uproar because it took them 4 hours to leave the car park on a busy weekend GrinGrinGrin
I shouldn't laugh, but seriously...

As the roads are exactly the same as they were last year and the year before, and more people are going for day trips, you'd think the traffic would stay similar when the beach reopens, wait for the rage instead...

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 12:25

Hand on, West Wittering is a real place?? I thought it was just a place in a book!

Anyway -
entitled morons
Unless you heavily fine people, they don't care about anything.

Wow, some people really can't stand other people

Do people ignore news? Councils all over have financial issues because of covid.

Now you are being deliberately obtuse.

PafLeChien · 21/05/2020 12:27

FliesandPies

other people who have no respect for other people, other people's properties, the environment in general and spoil everything for everybody else?
No, very proud not to stand any of them at all.

Meanwhile, groups are volunteering and giving up their free time to clean areas to maintain an acceptable level of living for everybody else...

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:28

No, I’m really not. Just explain why my perfectly reasonable argument about funding a core service is wrong. There’s already an eight week cost saving in their public convenience budget right now.

bigchris · 21/05/2020 12:29

2 bars were open and fish and chip places. We had fish and chips and a pint on the beach

Surely the bars are opening illegally ?

YouTheCat · 21/05/2020 12:30

Of course some people's need to sunbathe and visit a beach should be totally more important than trying to maintain core services during a pandemic. Hmm

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 21/05/2020 12:33

@Alsohuman I am not discussing this with you any further. Frankly, you should just go and find out about councils and budgets and covid. There are councils which are facing possible bankruptcy because of this, most report big budget holes caused by the crisis. Why don't you give them a call and tell them that they must be mistaken and there must be money because they "saved" on some services?
You are just goading here.

AuntyRigsby · 21/05/2020 12:36

@Omg

It may well be true that we are no longer economically able to provide toilets. But in that rather dire case it is inevitable that people will need you relieve themselves somewhere.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:38

You are just goading here

No, I’m really not and I’m sorry you think that because I really was moved by your previous goodwill towards me. I genuinely mean what I’m saying.

ITonyah · 21/05/2020 12:38

But in that rather dire case it is inevitable that people will need you relieve themselves somewhere

Then. Don't. Go.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:40

Then. Don't. Go

Ever? These places are going to have to open up sometime.

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 12:40

Boris Johnson 10th May speech -
And from this Wednesday, we want to encourage people to take more and even unlimited amounts of outdoor exercise. You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations..

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 12:42

Then. Don't. Go.

Says the person who wees in the sea..

ZeroFuchsGiven · 21/05/2020 12:43

How can you possibly say they are not be asked to do anything they dont normally do all year round? Since when has anyone been expected to put their health and safety at risk cleaning other peoples shit and piss during a pandemic? Would You do it? It just goes to show what kind of human being you are to expect anyone to do it tbh.

I'm not sure if you are being deliberately obtuse are just a little bit thick Hmm

I'm surprised anyone would actually WANT to use public toilets atm.

Alsohuman · 21/05/2020 12:48

Since when has anyone been expected to put their health and safety at risk cleaning other peoples shit and piss during a pandemic?

Since a number of councils are already doing it. Since hospital cleaners are doing it. I’m neither think nor obtuse (I think you’ll find they mean the same) but expecting any kind of logic on MN has always been a lost cause.

PafLeChien · 21/05/2020 12:50

When there's a need, there's a way

FliesandPies · 21/05/2020 12:51

Since when has anyone been expected to put their health and safety at risk cleaning other peoples shit and piss during a pandemic?

What do you think all the other cleaners are out there doing and have been doing since the pandemic was declared? Hmm

The80sweregreat · 21/05/2020 13:03

I don't understand why people like beaches anyway! I've done it in the past and the kids enjoyed it all when they were young , but I just dont ( I don't like hot weather either though to be fair)!
It's different abroad with a big sun umbrella and loungers and wooden boards to walk down so your feet don't burn , but English beaches don't have any of this or it's just rent a deckchair (if your lucky? )
The public loos are usually not that great either.

MadameMarie · 21/05/2020 13:04

Even if toilets are open a public toilet is the last place I'd want to be at the moment. Especially at the end of a 40 minute queue. It's not a festival.

PafLeChien · 21/05/2020 13:05

I just want to know if people are already guilty of antisocial behaviour, or are planning their weekends and justifying in advance their human right to go to the beach whatever the conditions Grin

MadameMarie · 21/05/2020 13:05

@the80swergreat

That's why the seaside resorts went into sharp decline once flying became accessible to the masses.
