I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

Clymene the sea and tide movement will break up faecal matter fast, within 24 hours I understand, and most fish and shell fish feed greedily at sewage outflows, so your concern is probably overstated. Years ago, we had a canal boat and a nurse just laughed at DH's fears: what do you think fish eat? she said. But don't swim there... DS had endless ear infections. Painful ones, with temperatures, requiring antibiotics. In a partially saline harbour.

lynsey91 · 20/05/2020 21:38

People weeing and shitting on the beach is disgusting. I can't take my dogs on the beach in the summer and yet humans can do this. They are thick vile disgusting creatures.

Surely unless you are someone who can go quite a few hours without needing the loo you would not go somewhere where there are no open toilets.

Me and DH can actually go hours without needing a loo but, as we both have a brain, we are not going anywhere other than our garden and the supermarket.

When the hospitals can't cope I really hope all the people ill because of their stupidity don't moan if they can;t get a hospital bed.

Still we could do with a massive reduction in the population

@mummydoris2006
I'm just up the coast from you at Cleethorpes. Biked down the seafront at 730 this morning and it was already getting busy. Our council have closed central prom to cars to allow for extra social distancing, some toilets are open, ice cream parlours and chippys. It was pretty busy x

L1eLand · 20/05/2020 21:41

Kind of apt.

FliesandPies · 20/05/2020 21:48

Nice misogynist slur too

Don't talk such bollocks..

FliesandPies · 20/05/2020 21:50

I seriously doubt entitled idiots leaving shit and rubbish in public places and other people garden have done anything for the good of anyone.

So only the people you approve of have been subject to lockdown?

ITonyah · 20/05/2020 21:54

I really think you have to be going some to even tacitly think its ok thst people are shitting in the beach.

People are shitting in local people's gardens too btw but I'm sure someone will come on to point out how snobbish we are for thinking that might be end of days behaviour.

mummydoris2006 · 20/05/2020 21:54

@Rowgtfc72 I love Cleethorpes 😊. We were only talking last night about a trip when this is all over.

@XingMing as you can probably imagine, as a local, I'm very well acquainted with tide patterns locally. The most popular beaches are the ones that have acres of golden shit strewn sand even at high tide during the summer months. We next expect the tides to hit the cliffs in winter/spring 2021.

The faecal matter is likely to be flung about building sandcastles much more quickly than it is being disposed of by marine life

CoachBombay · 20/05/2020 22:09

Funny isn't it

"I can't go back to work it's not safe" "I can't send my child to school, it's not safe" "I'm washing my shopping because it's not safe" "I haven't seen auty Sally in 8 weeks, because it's not safe" "should I report my neighbour for having a friend visit?, Because that's not safe"

Then....

Let's go to Blackpool for the day and sit on a crowded beach, shitting in bushes and cueing for packed shops. Completely safe, it's my right to do so BJ said I could travel, and I'm going to clap on Thursday night the loudest with my sauspan. 😂

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2020 22:17

Blackpool public loos are all open actually. So a pretty good choice for a visit. Sorry to thwart your pearl clutching.

XingMing · 20/05/2020 22:18

Clymene if you read my post, I did suggest below the tideline! I would agree with the gist though. Just stay at home!

CoachBombay · 20/05/2020 22:20

Tinky I'm not pearl clutching, it's just amusing. Everyone seems so vocal about everything, can't people just let others get on with their lives 😂

XingMing · 20/05/2020 22:20

Tinkly, it won't be Blackpool for me as it's five hours away and there's no way I can manage there and back without several loo stops.

1Morewineplease · 20/05/2020 22:24

Boris has said that it’s safe to travel somewhere to exercise.
That is the whole problem as most beauty spots are still not heard up for this.

As to tourists knocking on private doors to ask to use the toilet...well...! There’s no cure for stupidity.

likeafishneedsabike · 20/05/2020 22:25

You would think that when the councils heard the announcement from Boris TEN DAYS AGO (ten days!) that they might have put plans in place to open car parks, toilets and other facilities in beauty spots. But no. Instead, we have chaos. In this impending economic nightmare, the revenue for car parking etc could have come in really handy to local councils even more strapped for cash than they were previously.

YouTheCat · 20/05/2020 22:27

Boris's announcement was without the approval of his cabinet or parliament.

Comefromaway · 20/05/2020 22:37

The car documents have to have your current address on them (not updating this is an offence). So the police can take the number on the plate and see where is the driver's regular address.

That’s not true. Your driving licence has to but not your car registration documents. For example the car I drive is a company car, registered in the name of the company at a different address.

My student daughter is currently back at home, miles away from where she usually lives. Many students cars will be registered in Parent’s names.

Alsohuman · 20/05/2020 22:39

And I'm sure children will love digging up shits in the summer

Shit’s biodegradable, it will soon vanish.

Proudboomer · 20/05/2020 22:53

I am on the south coast and our beach was packed today.
I think just about everybody had the same idea as the main tourist part of the beach wasn’t too crowded but our residential bit was teaming.
I think people thought it would be more quite than the main part so headed here.
The are no facilities either and the public usually relies on those offered by the cafes at either end of this mile stretch of beach one is closed and the other is only offering a very limited takeaway service through a serving hatch.
It is going to be shit city down there if this sunny weather continues for much longer.

So only the people you approve of have been subject to lockdown?

who said that? I was replying to the ridiculous comment that anti-social idiots have been some kind of social heroes giving up, what was it, "their freedoms and their rights" to save the country Grin

Anyone who is happy urinating or defecating in a public place, the beach or somebody's front garden doesn't give a shit obviously about anyone else.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 20/05/2020 22:59

Its almost like BJ wants as many people to get the virus as possible by being so wooly. But not to take any responsibility for it. I absolutely love the seaside and swimming but know it is too soon.
Infection rates are bound to rise.

FliesandPies · 20/05/2020 23:08

who said that? I was replying to the ridiculous comment that anti-social idiots have been some kind of social heroes giving up, what was it, "their freedoms and their rights" to save the country

You said it and now you're saying it again. These 'anti-social idiots' have been in lockdown with everyone else so they have had to give up their freedom and rights along with everyone else. Rights to liberty, to assembly, to a family life. We were told that these rights were being suspended in order to protect the vulnerable and the NHS.

Now they have been told by their PM that it is ok to visit a beach or beauty spot, so that's what they're doing.

EllaPaella · 20/05/2020 23:08

@Tableclothing I live in the same town as you - I spotted the old lido in your photo. I took my dog down for a walk on the beach tonight at 8pm, I live a 5 minute walk from the seafront. At 8pm the beach was still packed, pavements were full of people, cyclists on the footpaths and large groups of people not just families but a dozen or more all together. All the ice cream vans in the car parks are open again and there were long queues with no one bothering to socially distance. Car parks are full.
There were groups of teenagers on the beach - not socially distancing at all.
It was in fact the busiest day I've seen here in years. Busier than the average warm day in the middle of the summer holidays.
Compounded by the fact that all the beaches half a mile up the road all the way up to Northumberland have kept the carparks closed meaning that everyone has congregated here instead of spreading out along the coast line.
No public toilets open either - minging.
