Seadide stupidly busy

I live in a seaside resort (Slegness) and today it is absolutely heaving with people. I understand new guidelines say you can drive and enjoy the beach etc for the day but people are really taking the Mickey!

The beach has human excrement on it, the queues for supermarkets are worse as people are queing hoping they can use the toilet and one person even knocked on a residents door and asked if his pregnant girlfriend could use the toilet. Upon being told no he told the homeowner they were out of order as she was pregnant and they'd drove from Essex.

I keep seeing threads where people that live by the sea etc are being slated for not welcoming visitors but the reality is due to the amount of people flocking to the coast we can't safely enjoy our own hometown, the streets are far to narrow to be able to stay 2m away from people with the influx of visitors. If any local dares to comment we are immediately hit with the "you wouldn't have jobs if it wasnt for us". Neither my own or any of my families jobs are tourist reliant and amazingly we manage to keep our economy going well enough during the winter months.

I understand people want a bit of normality and it's really hard on children but surely you should respect the place you visit and as people that live here all year round we should be able to safely enjoy our own hometown.

Nobody needs to visit a beach. It’s not an entitlement. It’s nuts. The gov just do this over and again. Make a decision, give no clarity and are absent when it’s clear it won’t work properly.. Opening schools, tubes, unlimited exercise with no limitations.

They’re spectacularly shit at handling the finer points.

welsh beaches are empty @FlamingoAndJohn

Clymene · 20/05/2020 20:42

I expect my local council will pay @FliesandPies which means me.So right now we are getting all the shit from tourists (quite literally) and none of the benefits.

And people on MN wonder why tourist communities are not that keen on visitors at the moment. It's a mystery, it really is Hmm

BertieDrapper · 20/05/2020 20:42

Went to our local beach this morning - literally 10 minute walk from our front door. Got there early and left when it started to get busy....and when the need for the loo got to uncomfortable.
We also sat away from the main strip.
God knows how al the "day trippers" coped with no public loos!

Sad thing is, my mum lives about 40 minutes from me and neither of us could do the journey and not need the loo!! So no public loos means we can't see each other!

frumpety · 20/05/2020 20:46

Are all the caravan parks near Skegness closed ?

exiledfromcornwall · 20/05/2020 20:48

In reply to a PP wondering about areas other than beaches, we live a short drive from a big hill with amazing views. We normally go there about once a week for a walk, and park in the car park, never had a problem finding a space. Since the announcement that we can drive to go for walks we haven't been able to get near the place.

FliesandPies · 20/05/2020 20:49

I live in the SW so I know about tourist communities and I am very tired of the antagonistic and hysterical attitude towards people wanting to visit. Yes, we all pay towards the upkeep of toilets etc but we also derive huge benefits from the influx. Also, I don't feel that I own the place just because i'm lucky enough to live there.

Alsohuman · 20/05/2020 20:51

I expect they will, funded from all the money they’ve saved from not having to clean the toilets for eight weeks.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/05/2020 20:54

When everything is open in August people will be walking on the sand barefoot through all that human poo 💩 🤮🤮🤮

XingMing · 20/05/2020 20:55

Take a spade, dig a hole, poo in it, and cover it up. Nature will cope. Faeces are bio degradeable, and feed fish. HTH! But don't leave it out to be stood in, please!

OnlyThenWhen · 20/05/2020 20:58

Or, just don't shit in public.
I'm wondering HOW they managed to squat on a beach and shit without someone being brave enough to call them out!

XingMing · 20/05/2020 21:02

That occurred to me too OnlyThenWhen. Maybe they took a windbreak. But the spade is essential. And below the tide line please.

GabsAlot · 20/05/2020 21:03

i agree about the travel limit he never should have said u can go anywhere-i mean shitting on abeach its digusting

GabsAlot · 20/05/2020 21:05

also happening near me in southend council says nothing they can do after the governments announcment

HUCKMUCK · 20/05/2020 21:08

What I don't get is why people are acting according to the rules and not according to what they know about the virus.

Covid doesn't have loopholes. It doesn't stop being contagious because the rules have changed.

Why don't more people think about the risk to themselves even if they don't give a shit about anyone else?

Our seaside town has been the same today. I was driving round town to do work deliveries and all the popular spots were rammed. No toilets open and longer than usual queues at the 2 supermarkets I went past.

Changeofname79 · 20/05/2020 21:09

I live near the sea and whilst it is busy that is not the main issue, most people are doing their best to adhere to social distancing and really trying their best however there were groups of up to 30 people there today which is ridiculous. Makes me so angry, so many families will be struggling financially and the longer this goes on the worse it will be.

When the government said you could travel I am assuming they meant to drive to nearby beauty spots or beaches etc not to travel hundreds of miles. Some people have no common sense at all and are really selfish.

XingMing · 20/05/2020 21:10

Impose a 20-mile radius travel limit tomorrow, and a huge fine for exceeding it. £1000 minimum. Or this Bank Holiday weekend is likely to destroy all the good work of 9 weeks of lockdown.

XingMing · 20/05/2020 21:13

Every significant road in the UK has ANPR cameras set up... could we just use them please?

Barbie222 · 20/05/2020 21:13

If there are no toilets open, you stay where you can get to one, not expect that one shall be magically made available for you. It's common sense. Did you really think you were going to be able to have a great day out at the beach with all facilities provided? No, you should have thought about that before you left the house. It's just being thick, there is no nice way to put it!

XingMing · 20/05/2020 21:14

ANPR means automatic number plate recognition, before anyone asks.

Clymene · 20/05/2020 21:17

It's hysterical not to want people shitting on the beach and blocking the pavements with their cars? Confused

Nice misogynist slur too 👍

I will welcome visitors with open arms when we're open and when the inconvenience of visitors is offset by the benefit to the local economy (fwiw my job has nothing to do with the tourist industry).

And I'm sure children will love digging up shits in the summer if we open the beaches then. Makes a change from shells and crabs I guess!

LuluJakey1 · 20/05/2020 21:25

@Tableclothing That is as busy as I have seen Long Sands this year. The cars are back driving back and forward along the sea-front, music blaring, engines revving. We are avoiding it this weekend and staying at home or going to down to Holywell Dene for our walk.

FlamingoAndJohn · 20/05/2020 21:34

Thanks for that @sadwithkiddies.
It’s interesting how people somewhere with the ‘stay at home message’ can manage to stay at home.
No one has to go to the beach.

YouTheCat · 20/05/2020 21:34

I'd love to hop on the bus to Tynemouth but it's just not a good idea. I do miss the chips and the market at the Metro station but it'll still be there when this is over and, hopefully, so will I.

OneandTwenty · 20/05/2020 21:35

The same stupid entitled and selfish people have given up their freedoms, rights and livelihoods to protect those vulnerable to the virus and save the tories bacon after years of underfunding the NHS. Grin

I seriously doubt entitled idiots leaving shit and rubbish in public places and other people garden have done anything for the good of anyone.
