To be annoyed that not all year 6 children that want to return to school can?

This is not a teacher or school bashing thread, I'm just interested in people's thoughts.

My child is in year 6, we have just been informed that out of a class of 30 only 10 children will be allowed to return to school because they don't have the staff to provide for any more.

These 10 children will be chosen on a first come first served basis, we have to email if we want our child to return.

This means that some children who want to return won't be able to.

AIBU to think that this is very unfair and that part time schooling for more groups would be more appropriate rather than one group in all the time.

Yanbu that's a very unfair way of offering places

Sandybval · 18/05/2020 17:48

If they're anything like the schools around here they'll only get a small uptake anyway, I would only worry about it if it does turn out to be an issue. Part time would be a nightmare to manage and to ensure everything is cleaned between etc.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2020 17:52

6 out of 91 (the 3 year groups) have said they're intending to come back in June

Hardly anyone is going to go back

my2bundles · 18/05/2020 17:57

Each individual school will have to assess risk to their staff. That has to be the priority.

Herpesfreesince03 · 18/05/2020 17:59

I have no idea what my schools planning on doing. In their latest letter they’ve stated only 5 children will be allowed per classroom

Dozer · 18/05/2020 18:00

“First come first served”, really?!

Drivingdownthe101 · 18/05/2020 18:00

LaurieFairyCake 91 out of 132 have said they want their children to return at our school, out of the three year groups.

FromageRay · 18/05/2020 18:01

I may have totally misunderstood but I thought part of the guidance issued said that places couldn't be split, it was a full time place or nothing?

Topsy44 · 18/05/2020 18:01

I think that is a very unfair way of doing things. I don't even know how they would go about doing that? Is it a case of who emails in first, then their child gets a place?!

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 18/05/2020 18:02

If they don’t have the staff then what else can they do? I don’t think part time schooling would be as safe due to cleaning requirements.
Hopefully only a small number of parents will choose for their kids to go back so no one is disappointed.

BendingSpoons · 18/05/2020 18:02

I think the issue with part time schooling is that if the same teacher is teaching multiple groups, they will be exposed to many more children and be a potential link between them. First come first served doesn't seem that fair though.

Lucywilde · 18/05/2020 18:02

I’ve got a year 6 son and the school have had a huge uptake in key worker places. From 20 up to 90. So I’m unsure whether my year 6 will be leaving 90 spots open across 3 year groups. Don’t know how that will work.

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 18/05/2020 18:03

My daughters school have said they won’t be opening on June 1st as they won’t be ready.

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 18/05/2020 18:05

*probably won’t

I presume they’re pretty certain as they’ve also said they’ll let parents know the new date.

CurlyEndive · 18/05/2020 18:06

YANBU. First come first served is a crazy system!

DDiva · 18/05/2020 18:07

We have been informed our school will only be taking year 6 back on 1st of June and not reception or year 1. Key workers who wfh are also being asked not to send children in if possible to keep them at home.

First come first served does seem an odd way to choose children but I'm not sure how else I would suggest.

PickUpAPickUpAPenguin · 18/05/2020 18:07

That's sad for kids who have parents who wouldn't reply to such a message. They are the ones that probably need school the most.

reefedsail · 18/05/2020 18:09

Presumably they went down the list as directed in the guidance: keyworkers & vulnerable chn, EYFS, Y1... and after fitting those children in only have space/ staff for one more 'bubble'.

Currently rotas are against guidance, so they are doing what they have been told.

spongebunnyfatpants · 18/05/2020 18:09

I know there are more than 10 that want to go back.

They are focusing on providing childcare for key workers, which I completely understand.

However I do think it should be open to all or open to none. It seems unfair that some will receive a full week of school and others will get three of four pieces of work set online every week.

LemonPudding · 18/05/2020 18:11

If they don't have the staff or the room what do you expect them to do?

spanieleyes · 18/05/2020 18:11

Well, it would be none then!

user1000000000000000001 · 18/05/2020 18:11

Ddiva they are supposed to prioritise the younger year groups

HalfOfWhoIUsedToBe · 18/05/2020 18:12

However I do think it should be open to all or open to none.

That’s ridiculous.

spongebunnyfatpants · 18/05/2020 18:17

@LemonPudding.
I guess I expect the system to be fair and all children be given an equal opportunity to access their education and not based on whose parents were able to access their email first.

OP posts:
spanieleyes · 18/05/2020 18:18

If they have 10 places they have to cut down somehow. They could have selected SEND children or FSM children but might have too many of each, or not enough- how do you prioritise one SEND child over another! They could have gone for alphabetical or pulling names out of a hat! Whatever they did, someone would complain!
