To think soon it won’t be socially acceptable to fly

I’m sad because I’ve been saving up for 6 years to go on holiday. I want to go to South America and Southeast Asia next year. I’ve also just got a job with a decent wage and I have been looking forward to much to making holidays a regular thing.

But they’re about to get more expensive aren’t they?

And suddenly I feel guilty about wanting to fly. One of my friends has already said that she will be going on “one last” foreign holiday and then stopping due to climate change.

And I really want to save the planet too. I’m just sad that it’s all going this way.
Am I overreacting or shall I get used to the idea my travelling days are numbered?

My flying habits won’t change when things become more normal again.

I usually fly 3 times a year, this year I was in Sweden for the weekend to meet my partners family, we were due to go to Sitges in July and I was going to be playing in the Bingham Cup in Ottawa in August. I did have one year where I must have flown around 30 times, some private as my then partners job required travel at times.

Froggiebop · 18/05/2020 19:17

Nah
As much as I’m willing to do things for the environment like recycling, life is too short and there’s too many amazing things to explore around the world.
I do care about the big picture but my life and my goals come first

Why not just admit that you don't care about the big picture, then, if you're not prepared to make even small changes to your lifestyle?

Froggiebop · 18/05/2020 19:24

I do make small changes like recycling, using my car less etc but I won’t give up travelling abroad.
We all help the environment in some ways and damage it in others. Nobody is wholly perfect environmentally.

MaryShelley1818 · 18/05/2020 19:24

Flying is probably the only thing I wouldn't want to give up.
I absolutely love travelling, it's my reason for working, to be able to afford holidays.
I have a 2-yr old and want him to see the world like I have. We've ready cancelled 2 trips this year and looking like we'll lose the third too and I'm gutted. Luckily I went to Poland in March just before lockdown so I have been somewhere this year.

BubblyBarbara · 18/05/2020 19:26

We should go back to when having a big holiday overseas was something you did a few times in your life. Really memorable like Macchu Pichu or walking the Rhine and not a forgettable throwaway beach waste of time.

I’ve been abroad every year for the past few decades and don’t need to keep doing it anymore so I think we should just do it once a decade or even less now on.

Mascotte · 18/05/2020 19:32

I'm spending what's left of my life travelling the world, cultures, cities, food, wine, art, cafes, people, everything.

LoopyinLockdown · 18/05/2020 19:32

Flying will return I'm sure but it will take a few years for it to return to anything similar to what we've been used to.
I think it will be expensive after this because so many airlines have gone bust, are on the brink if bust and have laid off more than half their staff.
I used to fly for a job. I got paid 9ff the week the pandemic was announced. I absolutely loved my job. It's all I want to do but people in my job usually live it, so the competition for jobs will be tough when they slowly start to return.

The aviation industry befored Covid contributed £22billion towards GDP and supported so many jobs.

Froggiebop · 18/05/2020 19:36

Do you mean ‘we’ as in the population?

MerryDeath · 18/05/2020 19:38

ha! if only. we will learn nothing from this.

sunflowery · 18/05/2020 20:11

If only the damaged ended at just our mode of transport.

You’ve only got to look to Southeast Asia to see the damage mass tourism is doing to the planet.

fuzzyduck1 · 18/05/2020 21:52

I’ve never been socially acceptable so I won’t stop flying.

MrsFezziwig · 19/05/2020 00:22

So it’s entirely reasonable to go on holiday as long as it’s one that you approve of @BubblyBarbara?. Maybe consider that if all the people who just like chilling out on beaches join you at Macchu Pichu, you’re going to find it even more crowded than it is already.

MrsFezziwig · 19/05/2020 00:32

And @BubblyBarbara again
I’ve been abroad every year for the past few decades and don’t need to keep doing it anymore so I think we should just do it once a decade or even less now on.

So because you’ve done all the travelling you want, no-one else (including young people) should be allowed to have their turn. This has got to be a windup.

squeekums · 19/05/2020 03:02

Especially since holidays abroad are a luxury and a privilege, not a necessity

Whats necessary to one may not be to others. For us, a holiday is. Even within Aus its easier to fly, not even just abroad

It's sad that so many people here can't wait to go flying again. No respect for the planet.
There are plenty of places you can travel to by train.

Its not sad really, people have different priorities to you and thats ok.
Not really, not at same speed or price.
No way would i want to spend a week on a train just to get to the Northern Territory. In aus a plane takes a 8 hour drive to victoria from SA to 1h30m flight, makes it a easy weekend getaway

strugglingwithdeciding · 19/05/2020 03:54

I can't wait to be able to go abroad again , had to cancel this years holiday for July but planning to book something for next year as got to have something to hopefully look forward to
My flight every other year or so isn't going to make a huge impact on climate change , business travel all over is probably a lot bigger but people are used to being able to travel and uk holidays are ok but no I don't want 2 weeks of rain with kids and nothing to do , might as well be at home
So every other year I have a foreign hot holiday and uk the other year

strugglingwithdeciding · 19/05/2020 03:57

As for want and need realistically we only need shelter , food and water etc but be a pretty boring existence

strugglingwithdeciding · 19/05/2020 03:58

How much damage does a flight of say 300 people do to the planet compared to all those driving hundreds of miles in these cr potentially 100 cars ? Serious question ?

willowtree81 · 19/05/2020 04:06

If you aren't already just go vegan instead. Animal agriculture is responsible for more Co2 emissions than all transport worldwide combined 😱.

It can save you money too as lentils are generally cheaper than meat... (plus it feels surprisingly good! I've never felt better actually.)

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 19/05/2020 05:51

The issue with veganism is long term deficiencies to iron, b vitamins and essential fatty acids and Zinc. Very difficult to do these

willowtree81 · 19/05/2020 06:34

@calledyoulastnightfromglasgow Oh, I've never heard this before! Could you share the evidence please?

camelfinger · 19/05/2020 07:09

I don’t think it will be socially unacceptable, just more impractical for short trips and less likely for business now that companies will have less money to send people all over and that videoconferencing has improved.

I think that people will put more thought into their holidays, so holidays of a lifetime will be planned many years ahead, at the expense of a week away somewhere warm.

I’m interested in the longer term impact of not meeting new people. Lots of people I know travel abroad frequently to visit their family. But if there’s less travel (like now) then there are fewer opportunities to meet potential friends and partners from other countries, hence less travel for weddings and trips over for Christmas etc.

blubellsarebells · 19/05/2020 07:11

I really hope it doesnt get too much more expensive.
I was planning to go to poland in july and portugal october.
I want to be able to take my son to see and enjoy other countries and cultures.
No plans to go long haul until I've been promoted because i cant afford it and son is too young to fully appreciate and enjoy it.
Some of my friends travel to europe and back 5 6 7 times a year as their families are there, if it becomes unaffordable i guess some would just go back to their home countries permanantly.

walkingchuckydoll · 19/05/2020 07:19

How come we are all discussing not flying to save the earth but don't say anything about all those people wanting a 3rd/4th/5th child? That's way worse.

SoNooneRecognisesMe · 19/05/2020 07:31

I love beach holidays thank you very much, it's my time to relax, rewind and do nothing in an otherwise (usually) physically hectic and demanding year. It is wonderful for my mental and physical well being. It's not a forgettable waste of time. Tramping about Macchu Pichu or the Rhine would make me quite unwell. Please remove your judgy pants on what is an "acceptable" and memorable choice of holiday!
