This evening has been AWFUL here on the AIBU board.

@MNHQ, at what point do you actually plan to intervene and do something about the sheer number of teacher bashing threads, and individual posts? Should we expect any kind of moderation?

Or, is this in fact, “all in the spirit of Mumsnet”? Because at the moment, you’re making it look a darn sight like you agree by proxy.

I think it's fairly obvious that how people speak in work and out of work differs.
Thankfully we're a bit beyond the social norms where someone's professionalism in any job is brought into question over the use of the work fuck.

Xenia · 16/05/2020 21:53

There are 500,000 teachers and lots of schools. Some are good. Some are bad.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 21:59

Exactly Xenia

LolaSmiles · 16/05/2020 22:11

You'd struggle to find a teacher who says otherwise.

To put another spin on it:
There's 500,000 teachers and lots of schools. Perhaps it's unwise to come online ranting about what teachers aren't doing / claiming teachers are lazy / claiming teachers don't want to do their jobs etc.
Perhaps when there's lots of teachers saying they want to go back to normal as soon as there's appropriate plans in place then maybe they DO want to go back to normal in a way that's responsible and safe for everyone.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 22:16

But if our children are not getting taught at all then we are quite right to be very very cross about that. Why individual teachers are taking that personally I have no idea.

I can work at home indefinitely and so I don't need my children physically in school but the fact they are not being taught at school is a scandal. Surely every good teacher agrees with that. The key is to discuss the solution not deny the problem exists.

PrivateD00r · 16/05/2020 22:24

Twerk I have never saw a teacher on here say they aren't upset by the whole situation. Most seem genuinely distressed that 'their' children are not currently getting taught and are worried about the vulnerable children. I don't think anyone is denying that it is a problem.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 22:30

That's interesting @Private because I have been told lots of times on here by teachers that it is ok that my son is getting (at most) a short worksheet and a link to BBC bitesize. I have been dismissed with suggestions to show them Oak Academy.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 22:32

And we have been accused of "teacher bashing" for having the temerity to complain.

And we have been accused of " sending our children to their deaths" if we say we are happy for them to go to school.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 16/05/2020 22:35

My son takes 11 subjects. We've heard from 3 teachers since 23 March. 3 teachers who have asked for work to be sent in. That's it. We've had a list of topics from the other ones. That's all. I am working full time. I am not trained in the 11 subjects. Yet am having to try to explain GCSE level material. You can see why some of us are bit bemused by the 'working hard' comments......

YgritteSnow · 16/05/2020 22:46

Also, rolling around laughing at the sudden thought that some of your DC will undoubtedly BE teachers one day, and they will tell you how awful you are to your face.

Eh? I don't get this. Are you saying that some of our children will become teachers and at that point the scales will fall from their eyes and they'll suddenly think their parents are awful because they said something a teacher didn't like on MN twenty years ago?

SachaStark · 16/05/2020 23:10

No, I’m just imagining that if this is the way you speak to/about teachers habitually now, I can’t imagine that would change if your own child actually became a teacher.

Going to accuse them of being lazy good-for-nothings, are you? Refuse to believe they work during the holidays or past 3pm? If there’s another similar crisis in the future, and they can’t work in their usual way, you’re going to tell them that that’s not good enough, and suggest that their pay is removed?

OP posts:
SachaStark · 16/05/2020 23:11

Anyway, good luck to your children who do become teachers. It’s not exactly a rare profession. Poor things, Mum won’t even respect their career choice.

Why is it teacher bashing to want my kids to go to school again at some point? Teachers work there.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 23:13

@SachaStark can't you see. It is the parenta who do respect what teachers do who are complaining about the lack of actual teaching. Because we know we cannot replace that and because we believe education is important.

Nicknacky · 16/05/2020 23:14

My eldest wants to be a teacher and I will support her fully.

That doesn’t stop me from thinking my youngest teacher is useless, and to be fair, I thought that before this virus.

NeverTwerkNaked · 16/05/2020 23:14

And for what is worth all my friends who are good teachers in the real world agree with me. That includes head teachers and deputy heads at highly respected state primaries.

LolaSmiles · 16/05/2020 23:21

Why is it teacher bashing to want my kids to go to school again at some point?
It's not.

I'm getting really fed up by these sorts of claims:

  • it's not teacher bashing to have an issue with your child's school, seek advice and raise the issue with your child's school (it is if you come on Mumsnet and decide to generalise that teachers aren't doing their jobs / aren't doing anything / are lounging around in their gardens all day)
  • it's not teacher bashing to say you're looking forward to your child's school being open so they can start getting back to normal education provision in a way that's appropriate for the situation (it is if you turn up on threads accusing teachers of not wanting to do their jobs, being obstructive for raising valid concerns, accusing teachers of wanting to be off work for months on an extended holiday)
  • it's not teacher bashing to engage in a totally reasonable discussion surrounding the problems in the government guidance, ask genuine questions about staff reservations and being genuinely open to listening to some of the concerns/things teachers think need properly addressing whilst we open schools (it is if you turn up being goady saying 'i guess we'll not have our children back to school until next March because the teachers don't want to teach them).
YgritteSnow · 17/05/2020 00:00

Anyway, good luck to your children who do become teachers. It’s not exactly a rare profession. Poor things, Mum won’t even respect their career choice.

Such nonsense. I don't respect shit teachers and I have met a few. You seem to think your profession in its entirety is above any kind of criticism and see any criticism or even genuine questioning, as a vicious personal attack. Your posts read as though you're revelling in playing the victim too. I am relieved you no longer teach. How approachable and willing to work with parents could you possibly be when you hold the strenuous beliefs you share on here? Your rigid mindset and sneering, defensive dismissal of any concerns parents might have makes you as bad as any person on here who actually does bitch about teachers in the way you describe. You're doing exactly what they're doing, lumping everyone together and dismissing them as having nothing of any value to say because anything they do say or query is just to be mean to you!

I'd be beyond proud if my child became a teacher. I'd be joyful that she'd done so well and achieved so much and having read some of the posts from certain teachers on here, I would hope that I had raised a well adjusted child to adulthood who would understand that parents are frightened and consumed with worry about the most important things in the world to them - their children - and not just dismiss them as thickos who don't understand how fab all teachers are and who should just STFU and scrape to any teacher who deigns to educate their child.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:10

Exactly ygritte. I have no qualms in calling our bad practice and incompetency in my profession.

EdwinaMay · 17/05/2020 08:56

Many people are in lock down and pretty grumpy - if it's not teachers, it's police, the papers, trump, NZers, etc etc often nurses, sometimes GPs, but they are given a miss these days.

EvolvingElle · 17/05/2020 09:52

22 hours, a beautiful day at the beach, and half a bottle of wine later, I’ve just accepted that all of you are SUCH... well, you know, mustn’t go name-calling now. And there’s just no arguing with unintelligent people

ALL of us? Every poster on the thread?

You started the thread to moan about unfair generalisations and are happy to call all parents unintelligent because they disagree with you?

If any proof was needed that SOME teachers are poor and incapable of logical thought I think you’re it. I’m another that’s very glad your out of the profession!

EvolvingElle · 17/05/2020 09:53

*you’re

Babbas · 17/05/2020 10:02

It's a fucking scandal that education has come to a standstill for the vast majority of kids. If parents raise legitimate concerns about this they are accused of teacher bashing. Any then teachers wonder why they are seen as lazy, precious and the finders of problems to every solution.

Find adequate ways of remote teaching or get the fucking schools open. That is my message to senior leadership.

Coffeeandbeans · 17/05/2020 10:12

My son is studying 11 GCSE subjects. He has finished all of the work set for him by mid-day everyday. 80% of it is not being marked. Some lessons he gets nothing. I don’t want to contact the school as I know they are trying their best. I also appreciate that if my son was motivated he would read around the subjects and do extra. I’m wfh so can’t help him step up. It isnt teacher bashing. I work in local government and always being told we are lazy fxxxxxs sitting on fantastic pension pots with endless sick leave. That’s life.
