Classroom Lessons via Zoom

AIBU to expect the teachers at my daughter’s rs primary school to offer at least some lessons via Zoom? The feedback I have been given is that that they aren’t offering it due to a) safeguarding issues, and b) it would add to the teachers workload. Well, surely if we parents consent for our child to sign in for these lessons then no safeguarding issue. Plus, at present, we parents are doing at least 60% of the teachers work for them via homeschooling. (I appreciate that they are setting work for the children, but this is part of the planning they would do anyway).

It's not good enough for teachers to say they're teaching their own children. The rest of us cant teach our own children as we're busy doing our jobs.

@penguinsbegin people are saying it works great.

My year 1 does 2x dance lessons a week and a drama and signing lesson each week. All done by zoom now. All the children are year 1 . It works brilliantly and is the highlight of her day and she helps me tidy (excavate Blush ) the playroom before each class.
The teacher can control the Mike. They don't all chat at once. It they love seeing each other. They love seeing their teacher. And they love that she is still teaching them .
And I can do work quietly in the corner of play room so my team can get the support they need from me.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:31

@penguinsbegin where have you got that from?

Although for what it is worth I am switching my son to private becaise the lack of teaching has made him very upset. And my daughter may have to switch over too if things don't improve. Because the virus will still be here for many months to come

Nonsense. I would just rather see teachers and unions campaign for laptops for those children rather than refusing to teach.

I have fixed the problem for my children and I still angry because so many more are being left behind. I am just well aware of the vastly widening gulf between state and private.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:40

I dont think those children should be left behind. But I dont think we should admit defeat and say that means no children get an education for the next couple of years either.

I want state education to be keeping pace with private as it is the key to social mobility.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:43

Well my daughter is loving her classes. So is my son who does his sax lesson and drama lesson over zoom

So does my other son who does cubs over zoom

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:44

What's your solution? We just don't educate children for 12 months? Or longer? The virus is endemic now.

How are you doing to deliver the education then .? Worksheets aren't an education

Don't lecture me about housing and feeding children that is literally what I am working on delivering in my job. homelessness and foodbanks. Whilst also teaching my own children because worksheets are not teaching.

How can you possibly accuse me of living in a middle class bubble? You know nothing of my life. What I do know is there are plenty of teachers who are delivering online lessons and who believe all teachers should be.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:55

@ConnieDoodle. How can you possibly know that? what an idiotic thing to say.

Kiwi09 · 17/05/2020 00:55

@penguinsbegin I’ve got a 5 year old child and using zoom for their class worked very well. The teacher is able to mute all the children and when they need to talk she just unmutes that one child. They can put up their hand to speak just like in a classroom. I imagine they’ll miss this ability when back in the class!! After some initial chaos for the older children with everyone trying to talk at once they very quickly adjusted to zoom etiquette.

I don’t think banning zoom calls because not everyone has devices is a good idea. I really like what we’ve done here. We have the option of getting hard copy learning materials from school, online learning with/without zoom calls and even classes via tv channels. Some people with devices wanted actual books because they didn’t want kids online all day. Some wealthy families have lots of devices, but none suitable for school work. Some families have no internet and some don’t even have cell phone coverage, but families are able to select the best option for them.

Some children will be behind when they’re back at school, but working with a smaller number of kids to help them catch up is surely preferable to holding everyone back.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:56

Some schools are deliverkng online lessons for primary. In some LEAs all" schools are.

NeverTwerkNaked · 17/05/2020 00:57

Thank you @Kiwi09

It is a shame a few immature teachers are once again resorting to personal insults on here.
