I am absolutely raging ! My FIL gave my 10month old black coffee! Luckily I saw it an quickly grabbed DD away. I was very angry at the time so just stormed off with her because had I not I would've been very rude and didn't want to be.

AIBU?? How on earth is it ok to give a baby black coffee.

I have a feeling he has been doing this for a while. As he has said it before like "ooo let's have a sip of coffee Shal we" but I always thought he was joking and wouldn't give it. But after seeing today I think he's been giving it all along!

Is this now going to affect my child? What do I do?? I'm a first time mum so very worried

Not ideal but some of the responses are hysterical. FWIW they give preemie babies in NICU caffeine to promote brain function. Your ten month old is not going to have stunted growth from one sip of coffee.

mamasiz · 15/05/2020 14:03

I always find it so bizarre that parents in law do this to their grandkids and then their DM will ask their DH to ‘have a word’. Can’t some of the mothers on here speak for themselves?! If my MIL or FIL did this I would be outraged and upset and would immediately tell so, bugger leaving it to my DH!

toomanyplants · 15/05/2020 14:06

The mass hysteria about this is making me chuckle!
Seriously, let it go! At the most a sip of coffee, good lord you sound like a histrionic nightmare 🙄

WalesStar · 15/05/2020 14:07

One day, you’ll look back on this and laugh, OP.

Giganticshark · 15/05/2020 14:08

PFBH- Precious first born hysteria.
Don't fall out with a family member over this, especially one you live with!!!!
Thanks for the chuckle guys

lboogy · 15/05/2020 14:09

I'd be upset too. The issue isn't the tiny sip of coffee it's the fact that gramps has obviously crossed boundaries many times when OP isn't around. Goodness know how much coffee the child has invested in the grandparents care.

leolion81 · 15/05/2020 14:11

If he lives with you why did you text him?

GaaaaarlicBread · 15/05/2020 14:11

It’s only a sip. I had coffee as a toddler (albeit milky coffee but still), and I’m perfectly fine. Even had some of my Dads beer if we were in the pub. Better call the i had better call my GP practice immediately 😂😂
I’m sure he won’t do it again after he saw your reaction 🙃😉

welldonesquirrels · 15/05/2020 14:13

Lot of posters on this thread saying that OP is overreacting, it's just a sip etc but I think they're missing the real issue here, which is the FIL's attitude.

There's something really red flaggy about people who behave like this.

He's being cavalier, treating baby's safety as a joke and ignoring her wishes as a mother which suggests he's irresponsible (or an idiot) at best. Worst case scenario, he's deliberately doing it to wind up OP, in which case he's just horrible.

OP, does he have form for this kind of shitty behaviour?

Doodar · 15/05/2020 14:13

biggest overreaction EVER ffs

myangelalex · 15/05/2020 14:15

Take your child to A&E. The coffee may have overstimulated her central nervous system and she may have an emotional breakdown.

NC your entire family in case this behaviour is repeated.

Thelnebriati · 15/05/2020 14:16

I'd be surprised if OP comes back after some of these comments.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 15/05/2020 14:16

30 years agoHow many babies were regularly given whiskey on a dummy for teething? Alcohol based gripe water, tea in a bottle, sugared milk in a bottle? Get a grip

userxx · 15/05/2020 14:17

I was drinking coffee out of a beaker. Got a massive addiction but it's better than crack I suppose. Chill out.

TabbyMumz · 15/05/2020 14:17

"I would contact your gp or health visitor asap"

Why? What do you think they are going to do?

TabbyMumz · 15/05/2020 14:18

It wont have adverse affects. He probably only gave her a sip.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 15/05/2020 14:20

So much hysteria over coffee that, on balance, probably wasn't actually ingested. Mine have all liked a "sip" of my drink but never actually got any.

Your baby will be fine. You've made your point to your FIL. Let it go. Move on.

Reallynowdear · 15/05/2020 14:20

What did FIL say when you asked him not do it again?

ParkheadParadise · 15/05/2020 14:21

@NoMorePoliticsPlease
My mum had 6 of us, we all had whisky in our bottles at some point.

MitziK · 15/05/2020 14:22

Of all the shit I went through as a kid, being given my own little cup of Mellow Birds' Coffee at 11.30am with half a digestive biscuit as a toddler (for a change from tea) was the least of anybody's worries.

It might have contributed to my complete absence of a sweet tooth and my love of bitter vegetables from infancy (including old school Brussels Sprouts), Olives and Artichoke Hearts, but maybe the preference is inherent and I was always going to like those things?

TryingToBeBold · 15/05/2020 14:23

I'm a FTM and even I'm face palmng at this post.

The initial post said FIL gave 10month old coffee.

Then it transpires that FIL held up cup to 10 month olds lips and you have no idea if baby actually drank any.

FWIW my DD has always been interested in adult cups and mugs. Even 3/4 full (not boiling) I will hold it to her mouth for her to "pretend" to drink. And she normally just bites the mug or lick the outside. She never drinks any.. normally "sip for trying" "sip for baby trying"

userxx · 15/05/2020 14:25

It might have contributed to my complete absence of a sweet tooth

Could that be a thing? I've never had a sweet tooth either.

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 15/05/2020 14:25

It was only a sip of that. Stop being so hysterical

Alsohuman · 15/05/2020 14:25

PFB at its finest.

Fucktacula · 15/05/2020 14:26

Your attitude is disgusting.
