Woman on Sky TV singing live at her front gate to celebrate the NHS. It's too much. Stop. Please.

@OneJump @DoctorHildegardLanstrom
I'm thinking maybe I'm on the same street as car alarm man ? Se seaside town ? Usually 4 beeps then followed by a very loud extravagant electronic bit ?
If so not very many clapping tonight

TiddyTid · 14/05/2020 23:30

Is it Thursday? Bugger. Lost track

indemMUND · 14/05/2020 23:30

Heard pots and pans for the first time tonight. I was watching a movie with bedroom windows open, bedroom is at the back of the house (single parent, child actually settled in bed for once). My first thought was Peter Griffin's pots and pans robot. Second thought was "it's 3 minutes past now, fuck off". In my area it's just virtue signalling at this point. At least there were no fireworks or that Superstar song blasting this time. My neighbours think nothing of doing what they want regardless of lockdown whenever it's not specifically Thursday at 8pm. Windows shut next week Grin

Toomuchtrouble4me · 14/05/2020 23:36

I think as a one-off it was a beautiful thing but then it got a bit cringe. I sent my two NHS friends a bottle of gin each - and they both prefered that to getting the clap!Grin

GabsAlot · 14/05/2020 23:48

they dont need an empty gesture like a clap

they need proper wages and working conditions

packetandtripe · 15/05/2020 00:04

yes it is anaemic now.

joystir59 · 15/05/2020 00:07

I don't do the clap but I did accidentally bang a lot of pans trying to find the cheese grater at approx 8pm.

Ellieclare · 15/05/2020 00:09

Out clapping again tonight, as I put on a warm top to go out the door I thought FFS have I got to do this now every Thursday for the rest of my life..😳

TheSandman · 15/05/2020 00:13

In a few years time you will be meeting up with others like you in village halls up and down the country. Clappers Anonymous. One of you stands up... "My name's Gladys and I'm a clapper. It's been six weeks since my last clap!" She looks proud as hell. Everyone in the circle smiles and sits on their hands as hard as they can.... must resist...

ProseccoBubbleFantasies · 15/05/2020 00:22

@HMSSophie.
Omg, I fucking love you. Please, please, please marry me and live with me forever.
Or, if that doesn't appeal, just be my bff?????

I'll clap you hourly. Whether you deserve it or not!

480Widdio · 15/05/2020 00:27

Loads out on our street, only time I see anyone else.

Our local hospital has videos of not one but two of their Staff out with mikes singing and dancing,,!!! Apparently they are proud of how talented their Staff are!!!

ChocolateCard · 15/05/2020 01:05

Sick of this nonsense now.

Virtue signalling performing seals

YouHurtMeSoMuch · 15/05/2020 05:41

Agree. It's complete virtue signalling nonsense.

Thank God we never started it here!!!

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 15/05/2020 07:20

The clap is for other keyworkers too. It is still going strong here, still fireworks being let off every week with one neighbour blowing an air horn. A car drive up our sidestreet tonight and joined in by bibbing its horn for the whole length of the road and a couple walking back with shopping clapped the whole length too.

I think It's more to do with camaraderie now because we aren't seeing our neighbours otherwise. I did notice there are a couple of households that weren't there who are normally out applauding so interest may be waning a little.

Willowmartha1 · 15/05/2020 07:26

Where does it all end as well ! How long are people going to be doing this for ? Until the lockdown ends or god help us until a vaccine is found !!

QueenofmyPrinces · 15/05/2020 07:32

Yes I saw the singing last night - it was so so cringe!!!

What started off as something lovely to do has now becomes a bit tedious but nobody feels they can stop doing it......and so we’ll still be doing it this time next year.

With each week that passes the enthusiasm is less in our street and the minute seems to be getting shorter and shorter as people just want to run back into their house and away from the forced clapping.

In a nurse and have only done it once and that was because I was outside trying to control my two children who wanted to bolt. My neighbours know I am a nurse and I’m sure they wonder why of all people I’m the one who never comes out.

I used to wake up on Friday morning and find numerous videos all over Facebook of people showing their street clapping etc but that’s all stopped too now.

People are bored of it but don’t know how to stop.

I just

Flitterwings · 15/05/2020 08:25

The police and anyone else who fancies it are still lining the roads to the hospital and the entrance road to it with their vehicles then setting off their sirens and beeping horns. I think people have really lost sight of the fact that the hospital isn’t just full of front line workers but also a lot of very ill people/dying people/women giving birth/sick children... it’s insanity! You can hear it from miles away and it goes on for much longer than a minute or two. I miss common sense :(

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 15/05/2020 08:33

Weve clapped a few times, we haven’t the last week or two

i looked out of the window at 8.05 (cos i was just asking ds1 if he, and his partner, clapped on a thursday and I couldn’t hear anything from outside our Window.) it had all finished

So much shorter and quieter than before

Ellieclare · 15/05/2020 09:35

@TheSandman that made me laugh out loud! 🤣 How did you know that the Village Hall is right behind my house!

Difficultcustomer · 15/05/2020 09:57

I think should only be clapping, no pots and pans or fireworks. Also no pressure.

Otherwise just don’t join in. If people want to clap why sneer, come on MN and belittle. If people are showing more appreciation of key workers great.

If you feel they are hypocritical then join the political party you feel will support them best and campaign by reminding people of the clapping and that they should now put their taxes and votes to use.

YouHurtMeSoMuch · 15/05/2020 13:06

I'm "sneering" (and actually I am not, I am simply passing an observation that you don't like) because it's becoming quite clear that it increasingly has little to genuinely do with the key workers, and lots to do with people being seen by others to do something (and do it fairly competitively).. And if it just so happens that it gets you on TV or a few pats on the back then all the better. I make no apologies for not supporting that.
