To not cut grapes

FreedomBird · 14/05/2020 07:39

I have a 3 and a 7 year old. And I no longer cut their grapes.

Me and DP had a massive barney about it last night and I’d like to know if I’m BU.

OP posts:
BeachTeddy · 14/05/2020 11:50

I've just stopped doing this and DD is five

RubbishQueen · 14/05/2020 11:51

I think some people on here are being really unkind to the OP. She has admitted she was in the wrong and will start cutting up grapes. No need to keep kicking her is there?

Jumping on people for asking questions will lead to people stop asking them. How will they learn..?

"A mistake is a mistake when you do not learn from it. A mistake you learn from is no longer a mistake it becomes a lesson."

I got really slack on cutting things up for my 3 year old. She'd help herself from the fruit bowl at Granny's house to grapes. She choked on a sausage one dinner time. I am very thankful I knew what to do. I also learned my lesson for being slack. Thank goodness it wasn't a grape. No matter how good an eater your child is, there is always a moment of distraction when it could go terribly wrong.

thecatsthecats · 14/05/2020 11:52

I'm as unknowledgable as you can get when it comes to kids, but even I know the answer to this one.

If you want to be lazy about it, just don't give them grapes at all until they're older (a perfectly acceptable solution).

chipsandgin · 14/05/2020 11:53

Made a fruit salad yesterday to use up all the fruit that didn’t have much life left - for the whole family but partly as I know DS1 will eat tons of it if it’s there... I realised after dutifully halving all the grapes (force of habit I guess) before I put them in that I was probably ok leaving them - he’s 17 and 6’5” now...

Coffeecak3 · 14/05/2020 11:56

When my dn was 2 he found a bag of boiled sweets. He was choking and going blue. Luckily my dm was staying and is a nurse. She held him upside down and slapped him really hard on his back. The sweet flew out of his mouth.
I don’t think my dsis would have done this.

And while we’re on the subject of hazards please never let young dc out when you’re cutting the grass. Especially if you have a sit on mower.
Mowers are small farm machines. They are dangerous.
When I worked in pathology we had to send blood up to a 2 year old who later died. He got run over by a mower.
It is much more common than people realise.

NoSauce · 14/05/2020 11:59

OP probably best to hide this thread if you haven’t already.

THE OP HAS SAID SHE IS GOING TO CUT GRAPES

IncrediblySadToo · 14/05/2020 12:00

@FreedomBird

I'm glad you've decided to cut them up

Lengthwise otherwise it's almost as risky & for the 7 yo as well - it's very easy for them to accidentally suck one into their windpipe even if they're being sensible

It seems a ridiculous faff, but it really is a good idea.

Another thing people don't realise are dangerous are marshmallows - simply because they lodge themselves and squish to fit the gap so no air gets past them. I only buy the mini ones and when out the kids pull them apart rather than eating one whole.

Apologise to DH & enjoy your grapes! 😊

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:02

🤦‍♀️ at the posters proclaiming their not quite 4 year olds are "always totally reliable". Hopefully you won't find out the hard way that they absolutely are not.

SallyWD · 14/05/2020 12:02

A 3 year old boy died choking on a grape. Why take the risk?

zingally · 14/05/2020 12:03

I would for the 3 year old certainly. And as you're doing it for the 3 year old, you might as well for the 7 year old as well, if they're eating them at the same time.

That being said, if I was only feeding the 7 year old grapes, I wouldn't bother personally.

My twins are 3 and a half, and I still intend to cut their grapes up for a few more years yet.

incognitomum · 14/05/2020 12:03

Glad you're cutting them.

A lad died locally who choked on a grape he was 2.5.

Can u get ds to cut his own?

incognitomum · 14/05/2020 12:05

My friend's adult cousin died in a restaurant on a piece of steak. We all need to be careful and cut food well, chew plenty.

Sexnotgender · 14/05/2020 12:05

I cut grapes for my 8 year old. Some grapes are huge.

That they are! Check out these huge ass mothertruckers. I cut these into 16 for my toddler!

Lordfrontpaw · 14/05/2020 12:06

Sorry but that photo is funny - or are they teensy weensy avos?

ineedaholidaynow · 14/05/2020 12:07

For those that say their young children will be fine without them being cut as they know to bite them, have you not read the other PP saying that they are more likely to bite them widthways which makes them just as dangerous if not more so, as could still get lodged but nothing to be able to grab on to pull out.

They must be cut lengthways.

Cherry tomatoes also shouldn't be eaten whole.

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:07

A grape cut into 16 pieces??

Lordfrontpaw · 14/05/2020 12:09

Also blueberries - I am getting massive ones now - size of marbles - and these could choke you too.

Sexnotgender · 14/05/2020 12:10

A grape cut into 16 pieces??

I usually do 4 pieces. These are genuinely the biggest grapes I’ve ever seen in my life😂

IlCommissarioMontalbano · 14/05/2020 12:10

Yup, still cut up grapes for my teens, longways, too much of a choking risk!

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:11

Blueberries are quite mushy, they don't have the hard shiny skin that grapes do.

Lordfrontpaw · 14/05/2020 12:12

The ones that I get are firm and have a thick skin. And huge!

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:12

Christ alive, these grapes are monstrous! Literally plum sized!

Lordfrontpaw · 14/05/2020 12:12

Are you sure those grapes aren’t plums? Do you like near Chernobyl?

Thisismytimetoshine · 14/05/2020 12:12

What is happening to fruit??
