To not cut grapes

FreedomBird · 14/05/2020 07:39

I have a 3 and a 7 year old. And I no longer cut their grapes.

Me and DP had a massive barney about it last night and I’d like to know if I’m BU.

My gran still cuts my grapes and I’m 26 Grin

I definitely cut them for my 5 and 3 year olds. Really don’t know why you wouldn’t.

ellenpartridge · 14/05/2020 07:52

YABU, it's not safe to give whole grapes to young children.

LadyWithLapdog · 14/05/2020 07:53

Cut them. Really not worth the risk.

Penners99 · 14/05/2020 07:54

My wife is 68, I still peel and cut her grapes

amymel2016 · 14/05/2020 07:55

Definitely still cut them for your 3 year old! I can’t imagine you’re saving much time?!

ScarfLadysBag · 14/05/2020 07:56

Yes. I'm bloody terrified of grapes after a little boy choked on one at a birthday party near here a few years ago and died. It's a few extra seconds of work.

AriadnesFilament · 14/05/2020 07:56

For the 3 yr old, yes, YABVU. The 7 yr old, no, as long they've been taught to bite them as soon as they put the grape in their mouth.

inthehammock · 14/05/2020 07:56

YABU. It's a very real risk that young children (and as possible above said, even those not as young as you'd think) can choke on grapes.

Still cutting grapes for my 5yo and 2yo and don't plan to stop for some years. In fact, I now cut them for me and DH if we ever have them. DS went through a brief phase of requesting them whole when he was 4 and I said he couldn't have them at all if not cut up. It takes moments to do and I would never forgive myself if I was too lazy to reduce the risk and the worst happened.

MaternitySpongeBob · 14/05/2020 07:57

3 is far far too young to risk it.

RingoFlamingo · 14/05/2020 07:57

You need to cut them. I had an awful moment recently when I gave one from some I was eating without cutting it to my 4 year old and he accidentally swallowed it whole; those few seconds when I thought he was choking were so scary.

NoHardSell · 14/05/2020 07:57

Why wouldn't you? For a 3 year old you absolutely should be and it's incredibly irresponsible not to. For the 7 year old I can see why you might not but it is still a small risk. For a 3 year old though?? That's the age group the advice is for!

cheeseismydownfall · 14/05/2020 07:57

You are insane.

peperethecat · 14/05/2020 08:00

I mean is it really worth the risk?

NoHardSell · 14/05/2020 08:00

Here is a recent medical article that recommends up to and including age 5

HoneysuckIejasmine · 14/05/2020 08:00

For the sake of the minute if takes to cut them?! What do you do with that gained time that is so important you'll risk your child's life for it?!

YABVU!

nanbread · 14/05/2020 08:10

Choking on food is the main cause of death for primary age children.

I don't even buy grapes now - they're one of the most sugary fruits and a faff because you have to cut them.

Tink2007 · 14/05/2020 08:12

You’re husband is right to have had a go at you.

It takes what? An extra minute or two to slice them up? Just bloody slice the things.

MrsG010814 · 14/05/2020 08:15

Just think how you would feel if your 3 year old choked and died because you couldn't be bothered to cut them up. That sounds harsh but this has happened and I don't think you would ever forgive yourself.

Doingitaloneandproud · 14/05/2020 08:16

I haven't stopped cutting them for my 9year old - so used to it now and its automatic! I always remember they advise a grape is the perfect size to get stuck, def would cut their grapes still

JassyRadlett · 14/05/2020 08:19

I thought all the grape stuff was OTT. Stopped cutting them up for eldest when he turned 5.

Then one evening, sitting on the sofa eating grapes, my 7 year old inhaled one, and started to choke. We were so lucky, he’d bitten it slightly before he choked on it so it didn’t form a perfect seal of his airway. We could hear the air whistling past it as he struggled to breathe. Otherwise I don’t think he would have been conscious by the time we managed to dislodge it. He certainly wouldn’t have been alive when the ambulance arrived.

It was the single most terrifying experience of my life.

I now cut up grapes every time. Please cut grapes for yours. It is a small inconvenience compared to the alternative.

MrsClutterbucksbaby · 14/05/2020 08:20

Just grab some scissors and cut them. It'll only take a few seconds

81Byerley · 14/05/2020 08:23

Having had an 8 year old choke on a grape, I'd say still do it.

Weebitawks · 14/05/2020 08:23

Yeah I still do for my four year old. It's just such a small thing to do. I would be annoyed if I had seen that my husband didn't.

Oysterbabe · 14/05/2020 08:24

Yes you are unreasonable. Children die from choking on grapes all too often. It takes seconds to cut them. They are so much higher risk of choking than other foods. I call them death balls.
If my husband gave uncut grapes to our children I would absolutely furious.

whoknowswhichwayisup · 14/05/2020 08:24

Of course cut the grapes. Ffs. What's the point NOT doing it? You have nothing to gain and a lot to lose. A 6yo almost died in our area recently. And when I've done paediatric first aid courses it's always mentioned.
