To keep my "thin" clothes or accept that I'll never wear my Levi's again?

Hi all. I used to weigh 10st a few years ago after successfully slimming down from 16st. I'm 5ft8. Over the last year through working, life etc I've gained 3st back. I've been sorting through my wardrobe over the last few weeks and came across my "thin clothes". Once I'd slimmed down, I bought lots of designer jeans such as Levi's, Diesel and 7 For All Mankind in a 28 waist. I recently tried them on and I cant get them past my thighs. I absoloutely love my Levi's 501 and I don't want to part with them or any of my "thin clothes".

I love eating and would love some advice on whether to keep or bin/sell my thin clothes. I did calorie counting to lose the weight last time, but I can't seem to get motivated. Also, once I lose the weight, how do I make sure I don't gain it back? Do any of you weigh regular? If your jeans get tight, do you cut back until they fit?

As its lockdown, I want to try and slim back down. Any help, tips or ideas are welcome. Thanks

I was exactly where you are a month ago, going through my clothes and considering binning all the beautiful expensive clothes I bought when I felt good about how I looked.

I'm 7lbs down now. Still some way to go, but I'll get there. You will too. Remember - it's enough to be motivated. It's all about discipline.

lou967 · 14/05/2020 14:24

@TheCatInAHat keep it up. You'll get there. Thanks for your kind words and vote of confidence.

@DivGirl I think its the discipline that I lack. Otherwise my jeans would still fit. I can't justify binning/selling them as they were expensive to buy. Also, a reward to myself for losing weight. Its good to hear that you've lost 7lbs. Keep at it. Its hard going but worth it in the end.

Don't bin your Levis. Life comes at you fast, and you have no idea where your next whirlwind of motivation will come from.

I was cheerfully resigned to slightly pushing my luck in a size 14 for the rest of my life. After all, I was in my forties and love food a lot.

Then a hot new guy started in my office and I literally stopped eating chocolate the day he walked in.

Turns out he's a bit of a nob but I have defied all my own expectations and am never going back. Nothing tastes as good as comfortable size 12 jeans feel.

Don't assume anything about yourself, I certainly never saw this coming.

lou967 · 14/05/2020 14:29

@morriszapp I won't bin my Levi's. I cant part with them. I still remember the day I bought them and being amazed that they fitted. It was a reward for my dedication to myself. But yes, I shouldn't assume anything.

I love your story @morriszapp! I agree with keeping the clothes. I've not been wearing normal clothes for three months (shoulder surgery and then lock down) and trying on my black work trousers last was a real shock, and also gave me motivation. The scales haven't gone up that much but obviously any muscle (not a lot) has turned to fat!

Fatted · 14/05/2020 14:33

Get rid of them OP. Your life is too short to continually mentally flogging yourself with a pair of jeans that are too small for you.

I chucked all of my thin clothes last year. I haven't been thin since my kids were born. My eldest is 7. I have been dieting since he was born. I've never really been thin for any length of time, the odd year here and there. I've just started accepting myself as fat. I will get torn to shreds on here no doubt because of this. But I am happier with myself and my appearance ever since I stopped hating myself.

lou967 · 14/05/2020 14:34

@lurkingforawhile I will keep the clothes. I'm certainly feeling more positive listening to other posters.

Thanks all

@Fatted I understand where you are coming from. But mine aren't old clothes as such. They used to fit 12-18months ago. I think if I had have found them after 5 or so years I may have just binned/sold/charity shopped them.

I used to be 8stone all my life, from teen all the way to my first pregnancy. I didnt gain much the first time and lost it again right away, but i got pregnant again really quickly and the second pregnancy was bad for me weight wise. I gained a lot and ended up at almost 14 stone. When DC2 was 1.5 years i still weighed 11 stone. I went on a diet and managed to lose all the extra weight! I now fit into all my pants again! They were just sitting at the bottom of my closet for 3 years.
I say keep them! You never know when you get your motivation back!
Ive been back on 8 stone for the last 3 years and i still kept my big clothes though just in case. Maybe i just have issues with throwing stuff away Smile
In order to keep my weight down i just make sure that i cut back as soon as my pants feel tight. I dont want to weigh myself all the time, so i use my pants to measure. I prefer pretty tight pants, so as soon as i gain weight i can feel them being uncomfortable. Then i usually add a fast day or 2 per week for a month or so and that gets me back on track.

catinb0oots · 14/05/2020 14:44

Don't ask me OP. I've still got two wardrobes full of my 9stone clothes (it's been nearly 15 years 🤣)

Ofalltheginjoints · 14/05/2020 14:52

I don’t want to part with my skinny Levi’s either OP! They haven’t fit for about two years and I’ve got 2.5stone to lose before I am where I was when I bought them but I’m determined (this week) to do it.

I find my motivation fluctuates with my pain levels, I have a disability so this limits the exercise I can do and with gyms being closed can’t even play wheelchair tennis so MFP calorie counting it is, day 2 today and just under my 1200 goal yesterday so good luck OP!

lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:19

@Ofalltheginjoints great to hear from you. We have the same goal. Also eating same amount of calories per day. Those skinny Levi's will be fitting you soon. Keep going!

@Jeleste you have more discipline than me. I will keep my jeans. Can I please ask what you did to get to 8stone? Does the jeans getting tight work, to keep weight off?

OP posts:
lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:23

@catinb0oots bless you. I think if I'd have kept mine for 15 years I would have sold them.

Weight lifting! I’ve gone from nearly 17 stone at 5’5 to 11 stone 3 just before lockdown. I don’t calorie count at all just try to do IF for a good 16 hours. However, I work in hospitality and usually eat crisps/muffins/chocolate in the early hours. I just try to ensure I get as much protein as possible each day without limiting my food choices.

I know it’s hard to find the motivation especially during lockdown but going from an 18/20 to a size 10 in my mid 30’s has been amazing. I’ve got rid of all my old clothes, including the size 12 ones. I’m wearing mostly gym kit in lockdown but keep trying on my skinny jeans/pvc skirts etc to check I’m still a size 10.

You can do it OP!

lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:34

@proseccoandpizza wow! Well done. Thats an amazing transformation. I'm not into weight lifting but I've seen that more and more people are doing it. Protein is key. I find that if I have protein with my meals i'm not as hungry inbetween meals. I am motivated.... I think. With lockdown, its the perfect time to start. No takeaways are open so there's no excuses for me. haha

I am on week 4 of BSD on down 13lbs.

If you want to lose the weight do it. There has never been a better time!

Redcrayons · 14/05/2020 16:42

Don’t do it! Every single summer I mourn the loss of the perfect denim jeans I got rid of when I was too big to wear them.

I put in 3st over the years after I had DCs and thought I’d never lose any weight. I hit 40 and decided to do something about it.

Mostly fasting to lose the weight, but I also run and some HIIT.

lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:43

@redcrayons I'll keep them. I've decided its time to get back into them!

lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:44

@Sushiroller well done you. That's an amazing loss! I agree. There has never been a better time.

I've held on to my old Favs for 10 years and then chucked them out at Christmas (charity shop).

I've lost weight since then and now had to buy new stuff in a lower size. Can't tell you how much that kills me!

lou967 · 14/05/2020 16:48

@SkinSkin I don't want to part with mine. I know I'd regret it, like you have. Plus I know how much I spent on mine which also would kill me if I charity shopped/ebayed them!!

OP posts:
SkinSkin · 14/05/2020 16:50

Yeah. I reckon if you've got storage space whack them in a vac bag and forget about it. Wish I'd done that at Christmas!

Ginmere · 14/05/2020 16:53

Keep them!

I've lost almost four stone due to gallbladder issues and have just spent today going through my old 'skinny' clothes looking for ones I can wear again. I am so grateful I don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe. As long as they are still ok fashion wise it's best to keep them. Luckily my clothes have always been more classic than up to the minute fashion.
