To refuse to have a corona vaccine?

EasyPleasey · 13/05/2020 13:35

A lot of people seem to be waiting for a corona vaccine. However I just dont trust any vaccine 'rushed' out, especially after all the mistakes made so far in this crisis. I would rather catch the actual virus and take my chances, as for most people it is a mild illness but who knows what the vaccine may do.

I know quite a few other people who say they will refuse any vaccine for this. I have had all the other vaccines, as have my children.

'Boost your immune system'

Jesus Christ. You going to advise we all 'detox' too?

Winterwoollies · 13/05/2020 16:48

All those who don’t want it are free to do as you please, I’m going to take mine though.

Just don’t come moaning if you develop it and suffer mercilessly at its hands.

My friend’s parent refused to let him have MMR due to autism (🙄) and when he developed mumps aged 17, it was catastrophic for him.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 13/05/2020 16:52

Anti vaxx is a movement where its supporters disagree with all vaxxines.

Being against one vaccine until its been out for a while does not equate with being anti vaxx.

LockedInMadness · 13/05/2020 16:52

I don’t like anti-Vaxxers. Why should their choices dictate why everyone else gets ill?

As has been said loads of times already on this thread, we are not anti-vaxxers Hmm
We will get the vaccine (if it's ever made) when it has been tested properly ie long term.

Do you get the difference?

RoosterPie · 13/05/2020 16:57

I understand people are concerned but these are extreme times.

I suspect the vaccine will be prioritised for the vulnerable anyway so I won’t end up having it. If however the government wants mass vaccination as being the best way to save lives and enable the country to make its way back to normal without the current infringement on everyone’s freedom, then of course I will. It’s selfish not to, unless there’s a good medical reason (which for lots of people there will be).

Roselilly36 · 13/05/2020 16:57

I would have it, DH definitely wouldn’t, but to be honest I don’t think there will be a vaccine, hopefully treatments licensed for other diseases will be found to be effective.

ddl1 · 13/05/2020 16:58

I think that anti-vaxxers (this doesn't refer to people like ZenDay with disorders that could make vaccines more risky) should not be legally required to have vaccines or fined or imprisoned if they don'ts[. However, I think that individuals and organizations should have the right to limit association with potential 'spreaders'. Schools should be able to exclude unvaccinated children - their parents can home-school, or try to find a school that doesn't mind. Travel companies should be able to require vaccination certificates for humans, just as for pets (in fact, I think this used to be the case many years ago). Of course, in the specific case of the coronavirus, it's all hypothetical until and unless there actually is a vaccine.

needanewusernameplz · 13/05/2020 16:58

@LockedInMadness the ironic thing is, anti vaxxer people rely on the herd vaccinating their children. When they have a baby sick and near death because of something they could have vaccinated their child for, they're going to regret it, and trust me, seen it happen with a hippy friends baby. Wasn't pretty.

ddl1 · 13/05/2020 16:59

if they don't - not if they don'ts!

BillywilliamV · 13/05/2020 17:00

Unlike most of you I actually work in clinical trials. There is an awful lot of time spent generally waiting for protocols, reports etc to be reviewed, ethic s boards meetings etc. You could cut a lot of spare out of the timelines without any real effects on the safety and efficacy testing. I imagine that this is what will happen.
Our Good Clinical Practice regulations are the best in the world. My children and I will be first in line for any approved vaccine.

'I have had the wonderful pleasure of seeing how much the British get off on having rules to follow, and also the clapping for NHS. Is it just me, or is it a bit communist?'

Is there any country where there AREN'T rules to follow?

The clapping for the NHS is something that people choose to do and that a few curtain-twitching types in some places may regrettably try to pressurize neighbours to do. It's not set by government.

bengalcat · 13/05/2020 17:04

I’d have it ( healthcare worker ) and pay for my family to have it if it’s quicker for them . If they extended trials to over 50’s would volunteer .

Boogieshoesss · 13/05/2020 17:06

@BillywilliamV and I’m the Queen’s corgi

letitgolego · 13/05/2020 17:07

I hope there is a 'contagion style' approach to vaccination. You get essentially 'tagged' once you have been vaccinated/proven to have immunity and then are allowed to go back to your daily business. Those who choose not to be vaccinated absolutely have the right to but lockdown remains on them as they still pose a threat to public health. Various caveats and exceptions would be made for not being able to have the vaccine for medical reason but none for beliefs. I don't care if you don't want it because of your own 'research', religious or political belief. If you choose not to you remain a risk to public health so must stay in lockdown.

$4 Billion and Growing: U.S. Payouts for Vaccine Injuries and Deaths Keep Climbing

childrenshealthdefense.org/news/4-billion-and-growing-u-s-payouts-for-vaccine-injuries-and-deaths-keep-climbing/'

Not very balanced website though is it? Read this study alongside it. Your study talks about over 6,000 cases being settled in decades as a result of vaccines for all diseases.

This peer-reviewed scientific study estimates the number of deaths from measles alone in the US at 1,859 annually without the vaccine.

academic.oup.com/jid/article/189/Supplement_1/S1/820569

In the 1950s on top of the 450 deaths annually, 150,000 people had respiratory complications annually as a result of measles infection and 4,000 had encephalitis. That doesn't take into account all the deaths and serious illnesses from other causes, such as mumps, whooping cough, polio, german measles etc.

We've had 30,000 deaths in four months from Covid and a probable large number of complications on top. The question is would the vaccine result in anything like that many deaths/complications. We don't know yet but evidence from other illnesses suggests not.

Just for balance.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/05/2020 17:15

I hope there is a 'contagion style' approach to vaccination.

I'll be disappointed if Chris Whitty didn't take one for the team and administer the first shot into his own arm and then waltz through the covid ward without ppe.

maddy68 · 13/05/2020 17:18

If you want it have it, if you don't don't ? It's all hypothetical at the moment as their isn't one

Wheresthebiffer2 · 13/05/2020 17:19

A vaccine isn't available to you at the moment, so it's irrelevant what you think you will or won't do.

opticaldelusion · 13/05/2020 17:24

Anyone who uses the term 'sheeple' in a non-ironic way is widely recognised as an idiot.

Sedlescombe · 13/05/2020 17:27

Pinklynx For balance - you mean straight of one of the main Anti-Vaxxer websites in the US. Entirely right to post a line but think many people might appreciate some context. "Childrens Health Defense" are one of the leading anti-science activist groups opposing any form of vaccine for just about everything. I would need a few days to research their specific claims here but personally I know enough!

CorianderLord · 13/05/2020 17:27

Do what you want and enjoy the herd immunity. Free country.

bruffin · 13/05/2020 17:32

People who shout about rushed vaccines do it to look intelligent, but in reality know nothing about what they are talking about. Dunning Krueger Syndrome

Wolfgirrl · 13/05/2020 17:34

@letitgolego

Couldn't have put it better myself.

Some people forget we live in a society. We care about the safety of others as well as ourselves (well, most of us do).

If you are selfish and only care about yourself?l, you shouldn't be living in society.

Emmy2020 · 13/05/2020 17:34

@EasyPleasey Okay you might not get too ill from it and be fine but don’t worry about the people you may pass it onto and may die from it! 🙄🙄😡 Ridiculous! It’s not just you that you need to think about!

EarlGreywithLemon · 13/05/2020 17:39

The best scientists are working flat out to ensure this vaccine is safe. Mother Nature isn’t testing Covid 19 for the same.
I’ll be taking the vaccine.
