To refuse to have a corona vaccine?

EasyPleasey · 13/05/2020 13:35

A lot of people seem to be waiting for a corona vaccine. However I just dont trust any vaccine 'rushed' out, especially after all the mistakes made so far in this crisis. I would rather catch the actual virus and take my chances, as for most people it is a mild illness but who knows what the vaccine may do.

I know quite a few other people who say they will refuse any vaccine for this. I have had all the other vaccines, as have my children.

AIBU?

@Jaxhog don't you know that every on MN is a scientist or doctor? They're all medical experts. I myself have an online degree in coronavirus. I made it yesterday with my kids and their crayons.

@weirdandpissedoff find me a drug where there's no cases of anything.

Of course there are risks but usually the majority of people are helped and there's an unfortunate few that arent.

I had a reaction to a flu jab and almost died. So not having this one.

Don't get why you're all waxing hypotheticals when you could be doing something useful with your time. I guess we are on lockdown though and we all need a hobby.

Its going to be a verrrrryy long time before you need to choose to be science ignoring antivax idiots.

Out of interest, do any of you remember that time you got polio? No? Oh thats right, you didn't get polio...because you were vaccinated.

We would be treading a very dangerous path if we made it compulsory. Personally I would take it, but it should be your choice.

No-one is making you have a vaccine, we don't have compulsory vaccination in this country (assuming you are in the UK of course) - your body, your choice.
Although I'm not keen on vaccinations myself (I don't have the flu' one for instance) I shall have any coronavirus one. But it's my choice, I shan't be persuading anyone else to have it if they don't want to. Not sure what you are upset about.....

I will make that decision once a vaccine is available. Who has manufactured it, which clinical trials did it go through, how many people was it tested on and for how long were they followed...etc.
And yes I am knowledgeable about clinical trials and also have access to even more knowledgeable people whose advice I trust.

@WanderingMilly are you serious? Vaccinations aren't compulsory here? I'm new to UK, moved from Australia. There, you can't send your kids to school without it, nor can you claim certain benefits.

Same op. Vaccines usually take 10 years of testing anyway and the swine flu one was rushed out and loads of people are still suffering from it. That and its said in the news multiple times that they have skipped the animal testing aspects of this vaccine to make it quicker. No thanks.

I do understand your concerns and think they are definitely valid. With a new vaccine theres also no way of knowing if there might be issues with it later on.
However, vaccines only work if the majority of people actually take it. Lots of people wont be able to take it, because of other health issues and in order to protect those i think its important that the people who can actually get it.

You might catch it mildly, but you might also pass it on to a vulnerable person who then dies. If you were vaccinated then that would not happen.

@letmethinkaboutitfornow thank you! I have had the wonderful pleasure of seeing how much the British get off on having rules to follow, and also the clapping for NHS. Is it just me, or is it a bit communist?

That and its said in the news multiple times that they have skipped the animal testing aspects of this vaccine to make it quicker.

That's not true.

The Oxford team had successful trials in several species of animals before moving onto human trials.

A team in America have had successful trial with monkey who were vaccinated and then exposed to high viral loads with no resulting infection.

Saying the animal trials have been skipped is incorrect.

I voted YABU, because I would gladly grab any vaccine going that could even partially end this nightmare. But of course one cannot make firm judgements about the reasonableness or otherwise until a vaccine actually exists, and we know more about the effectiveness and potential side effects.

Well it's your body, so it's up to you so I don't think YABU.

I feel the same as you do OP I also have been the victim of doctors and the pharmaceutical industry. I've been used as a guinea pig too many times.

I have a uncommon autoimmune disease.

I've taken horrible harmful medication since 2008 that hasn't helped, had bad side-effects and continue to get worse. I spent last summer on ORENCIA (abatacept) infusions that made me so ill... Now they want to start me on another, this time Xeljanz (tofacitinib). They know it won't work but have to show the feds they are trying to get me off my pain medication, which helps no-end and with NO side effects. There is always that worry that my pain meds will be stopped if I don't comply.

I had a very bad set back when I had the flu vaccine. No CoVid vaccine for me.

'That and its said in the news multiple times that they have skipped the animal testing aspects of this vaccine to make it quicker.'

That's not true. I don't know about every vaccine study, but in all that I know, animal studies have been done. In any case, the vaccine will not be made generally available until studies have also been done with humans. This is indeed the stage which some studies have reached: for example, the Oxford researchers have already carried out studies with animals, with promising results, and are now carrying their first study with human participants.

There was increase in those symptoms in people who hadnt had the vaccine as well, so not as black and white as it seems

Speaking as someone who is immuno-compromised; meaning that my immune system is suppressed and am hence at greater risk if I could catch the virus - how will I know who is refusing to take the vaccine?

I have been out of the house for about an hour over the last eight weeks - though at least have a garden to sit in. For those who are asserting the right not to take a vaccine - and I find it hard to imagine a situation where people are forced to be vaccinated against their will...how will you avoid killing me? Are you prepared to wear a badge or perhaps a bright yellow hat so I can avoid you?

YANBU simply because it's your choice. I'm sure someone else will use it.

My husband will die if he contracts Corona Virus. GP (one he had never met) phoned him and told him he would almost certainly not be ventilated if he caught it and asked him to have a DNACPR put on his records!

Our son moved out to stay with a friend, so it was just dh and I. We are now in week 8 of shielding and expect this to last most of the year! As far as we are concerned a vaccine can’t come soon enough.

I don’t like anti-Vaxxers. Why should their choices dictate why everyone else gets ill?
