The first time I saw Pan’s Labyrinth I was simultaneously enchanted and horrified, Its one of my favourite films although its uncomfortable viewing at times

A pp also said magnolia, it got lots of negativity but I really enjoyed it

RickOShay · 13/05/2020 21:42

Saving Private Ryan.
I got real knots of anxiety when the german tanks were heard in the distance and they were preparing to defend the French village.
Grim reality of war.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 13/05/2020 21:43

Requiem for a dream. I have only seen it once, I can't bring myself to watch it again, too shocking.

Memento. It's such a strong and unique film.

Pan's Labyrinth. Beautiful, sad and deeply affecting.

Incendes

Seetheprettysnowdrops · 13/05/2020 21:46

Lots of interesting responses

Profound is very subjective

I actually found Boy in the Striped Pyjamas very shallow and lightweight, considering the subject matter

Conversely, UP had so many messages conveyed through an animation

itsniceoopnorth · 13/05/2020 21:47

Dead Poets Society.
Affected me quite a lot that film

ByzantinePrincess · 13/05/2020 21:48

Forest Gump, profound?!

I liked 50/50 and Jojo Rabbit, obviously Shawshank Redemption... Withnail and I?

AppleSighDuh · 13/05/2020 21:49

Moonlight. I'm watching it now on Film4. All 3 of the Chirons make my heart ache, such a beautiful film.

merryhouse · 13/05/2020 21:50

Gracious, 256 messages and I've seen 16 of these films. I mean, I knew I wasn't really a film person, but that's quite something.

(Some I saw at school - Mockingbird, Cuckoo's Nest, Threads, To Sir with Love; a couple as a student - Thelma and Louise, Cry Freedom; then there's Casablanca and Twelve Angry Men, and some children's films - Hook, Mary Poppins, Lion King, Wall-E, Inside Out and the Toy Story saga.)

I only have Actual Opinions on one: Arrival. Opinions are: gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! Honestly, that is NOT how language works

Graphista · 13/05/2020 21:51

Mr Holland's opus

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 13/05/2020 21:53

To ask do PPs know what profound means is to not understand the utterly subjective nature of the art and how the ‘heavy’ message can be presented. So yes, Pan’s Labyrinth and Jojo Rabbit hit the spot precisely because of the nature of the delivery of the message. Fairy tale and comedy respectively, and yet they hammer home the message maybe because of the presentation not despite it. Agree with PP re the unexpected scene in Jojo Rabbit. Very effective. Pan’s Labyrinth is one of the saddest films I’ve ever seen. Any fans of it should watch it’s ‘brother’ film, The Devil’s Backbone.

Boyhood.
The Pacific - technically a tv series but fuck it really made me assess the fragility of life. Boys at war.
All Quiet on the Western Front.
Oranges and Sunshine - absolutely broke me. The main actress is quite popular, I can't think of her name but she was phenomenal.
6 million and one.
Blackfish.
Room.

Lion

Butterbeaninjeans · 13/05/2020 21:56

Getting lots of ideas of films to watch here 😁

JustOneMoreStep · 13/05/2020 22:05

For me it has to be 'Let him Have It', based on the true story of Derek Bently. Watched it as a student back in the early/mid 00s when one of the papers did free DVDs once a week and we were all broke. Never have I seen before or since a room full of drunken students sober up so quickly. Heartbroken didnt even cover it.

Not read all the replies but Sliding doors is one that makes me think about how life is such a game of chance.
