Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

Hi. The next PEAK is expected November/December, so this may not be an option either.

Oscarsdaddy · 15/05/2020 17:34

Current rules say that you can drive anywhere in England for a day out but you must return home every night and sleep where you usually live

So you can spend your daytime in Devon or Cornwall just make sure you go home every night

Hope that helps 😜

pollymere · 15/05/2020 17:39

Say you want to opt for the reschedule. They should be fine with it being for 2022. I had an issue and by the time it was sorted I'd booked our holiday. The Company were fine with such an extended reschedule!

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 17:39

Again. Why does it matter if people travel internally within in the UK? Whilst our borders have no controls.
We've had over 95,000 people arrive at our airports during lockdown so far. No checks or quarantine. They could be heading anywhere in the UK.

Daffodil101 · 15/05/2020 17:40

Why is PEAK in capitals? Such hysteria.

deandra · 15/05/2020 17:42

Frigging hell, don’t come to the east either. Just stay at home ffs, your holiday isn’t more important than not spreading a disease around so you can sit on a different bit of grass.

😂😂😂

M2B19 · 15/05/2020 17:44

We were going to Dorset on the 26th June. We’ve been advised that that’s no longer going ahead by the travel company. I’m surprised you haven’t been told the same.

Flyingskunk · 15/05/2020 17:47

You’re not allowed to stay in any holiday accommodation until at least the 4th of July and then I’m guessing it will reviewed again. So no you can’t go

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 17:48

How come people fresh off a plane get to travel across the UK with no restrictions or checks?

Why cancel holidays given that's going on?

jenkel · 15/05/2020 17:54

I love Devon, Cornwall and the Lake District and have had many fantastic holidays there, i understand the fears of impending tourists but I also understand the well being of people who no longer has work. I also understand how tough it is for people that live in built up areas with no green space. My happy space is the beach, whenever life gets to tough a day at the beach sorts my head out. I would do anything to spend a day at the beach. But the hatred that seems to come across from those people that are fortunate to live in some of the most beautiful parts of the uk towards the rest of us is very sad. I’m not sure what the answer is, but we need to work together as a country, just be careful what you wish for.

Littlemissdaredevil · 15/05/2020 17:58

DC police have tweeted that #ThinkTwice about travelling to Devon and Cornwall.

We’d love to see you again, just not quite yet. Stay local and #ComeBackLater when it’s safer for all of us.

R is still estimated to be 0.78 in the South West which is high compared to 0.4 in London.

We do want people to come back just not quite yet

Attitude84 · 15/05/2020 17:59

Everyone I know who has booked a holiday has it refunded at the last possible minute. It has to be the company you’ve booked with’s choice, not yours. If you cancel, they won’t issue a refund. I’d call them and find out. Will keep everything crossed for you x

Summerof699 · 15/05/2020 18:00

I would hope it will be open by then. It's one thing to worry about hospital capacity, but stopping tourism when they are pretty empty will close lots of businesses that depend on the money. The country will go bankrupt at this rate.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:02

Agree this is an issue. I was under the impression though that the 1/10 flights still running are mostly cargo, repatriation, or for essential work routes e.g. getting oil rig workers to Aberdeen. So essential rather than leisure.

Although I do wish they'd hurry up and implement the announced quarantining of arrivals.

Cryalot2 · 15/05/2020 18:04

Flowers op . It sounds as though it is very unfriendly there.
We were to be abroad last week . But we always go away in early autumn. There is a special birthday coming up and the normal is to treat the person a break abroad.

We had thought that given abroad is out to try Devon /Cornwall, but after reading this no way. Things are dreadfully stressful and to be honest I feel I am going mad .
The way I feel at the moment I would be happy for the virus to put me out of my misery. Not that I would go near a drs or hospital to waste resources of others who need them more.
Husband rang drs to get repeat prescriptions for us both , so they could be picked up together and only go out once. But no receptionists says we have ordered 2 items 3 days too soon and cannot be ordered together.
Covid seems to have claimed common sense and good manners.
To all those who live in Devon Cornwall, just enjoy it and ban visitors and tourists.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:05

Are Devon and Cornwall police breaking the law with their tweeting? They can't legally stop people travelling there given the government has said people in England can now travel for the day.

is still estimated to be 0.78 in the South West which is high compared to 0.4 in London.
In which case why worry about visitors? It's now those from the SW who need to Stay Away from elsewhere. Including any commutes for work or business.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:09

If the R is looking iffy (either nationally, or in regional areas on the new monitoring systems being introduced), the government won't release the reopening of hospitality businesses. So no real concern.

Not sure of the legality of the D&C Police stance. But it will mostly just be people coming from within the south west because if you drive any further it's not really pleasantly doable as a day trip.

The beaches in our village were busy today. Pretty sure this is just people from towns and villages inland from here, within a small-ish radius. We'll go out for our walk now, as it's quieter. I'm sure most people in coastal spots will do the same, with reasonable level heads.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:09

repatriation
Including perhaps people from Cornwall. Who will be travelling there after arriving at the airport with no checks or quarantine.

It's a big issue for the whole UK. Makes lockdown or any internal restrictions pointless. It needs to be sorted asap.

We're one of the only countries in the world that hasn't put in place border controls, whether checks or quarantine.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:10

Including perhaps people from Cornwall

Maybe, yes. Not sure what your point is there? Repatriation flights could be returning to people to any corner of the UK. It's an essential journey. Not a problem.

Chig · 15/05/2020 18:13

We have cancelled our holiday for this August to Cornwall. We had a caravan. We will hopefully go next year.

Pat123dev · 15/05/2020 18:16

I'm from the Devon Cornwall border, and a huge income is holiday accommodation. It's heart breaking watching the holiday locations struggle. I agree that the hospitals won't cope, they don't cope anyway! its Also the huge elderly population.
That said, I would think self catering would be a good option to start with. And I'm hopeful, for many of my friends who own holiday accommodation that they can open their doors this season, might be limited? Camping could run at 3rd capacity? Our economy here relies on it! Albiet limited?!

TatianaBis · 15/05/2020 18:18

We're one of the only countries in the world that hasn't put in place border controls, whether checks or quarantine.

So ironic for a government whose explicit policy is control over borders!

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:21

It's not just essential flights arriving. We have no border restrictions at all.

It is a problem that 95,000+ have arrived in the UK during lockdown. With no checks, no quarantine. It puts us all at risk and makes lockdown pointless.

If the people of Cornwall don't want the disease to spread to them, then essential journey or not, these airport arrivals should be checked and quarantined.

It seems bizarre to be concerned about holidaymakers coming from places in the UK with now lower R rates yet not bothered about unchecked airport arrivals.

Checks and quarantine (and closed borders to non essential flights) are what most other countries around the world are doing.

Littlemissdaredevil · 15/05/2020 18:24

I thought the DC police tweet was polite. It’s not saying fuck off don’t visit us and if you do well nick you! It’s saying we’d love to see you again just not quite yet!

The new guidance does allow people to travel to exercise so you could come on a day trip and there is nothing to stop you. However, travel to second homes is still prohibited and all of the hotels and holiday parks are still shut.

R is higher in the SW compared to most of the rest of the country. We don’t really want to give you CV as a present to take back home!

Pat123dev · 15/05/2020 18:24

I also think people should ignore the bullshit online 🙄. Anybody being rude probably don't run a business in hospitality or maybe doesn't even live here and is trolling!!! Most people here are civilised and lovely!! So please don't tar us all with same brush. I'd love to welcome back visitors when it's safe. It's a beautiful place to be enjoyed!!
