Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

I would reschedule for next year. The family wedding isn't going to take up the whole of your summer next year, so either go before or after it. You will have already paid up anyway so your only outgoings will be activities and I would just budget for those accordingly.

There is not much point in going now if nothing is open and locals are being hostile at the moment.

GrownPersonHere · 14/05/2020 20:55

Why are people assuming that ones wanting to visit Devon/Cornwall will take up room in the hospitals? Believe it or not, most people are healthy and may not get the virus! If they're self catering or in a caravan, they're not bothering anyone. And what's wrong with wanting a change of scenery? "You won't be welcome!' Well damn. I'd have thought they were going for themselves not for you lol.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 21:11

Indeed! I said on another thread that even if I got poorly, I’d go home. I’d never present at Treliske. DH works in bloody intensive care, there’s no way I’m presenting to an unknown staff team when I could roll up at his hospital and be treated by his colleagues.

Dementors started shouting I could be asymptomatic. And then accused me of travelling across counties spreading the virus just to get home.

People have gone mad. I fear for their mental health.

OrangeSamphire · 14/05/2020 21:16

I think you're right @daffodil101 that a lot of people would simply go home if they became unwell on holiday.

The concern is more that because the population of Cornwall rises so sharply with the height of tourism season, that the proportion of asymptomatic carriers could cause a spike here.

Who knows whether that concern is justifiable or reasonable, but I don't blame people for being worried about the risk.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 21:24

No, but it’s so, so hard to justify sacrificing the economy for. If I was asymptomatic but taking the right precautions, I’m unlikely to pass it to people walking past. I know people who have had confirmed covid and not even passed it to people in the same house.

TatianaBis · 14/05/2020 21:41

Yes @tatianabis, 9 out of 10 flights have been grounded since the UK went into lockdown. Now who's talking cobblers?

What do you not understand about 15,000 people flying in per day nonetheless??

No tourist would be as condescending as to suggest to a Londoner that their home turf would be decimated without the tourist pound.

No Londoner would ever be so stupid as to claim that London doesn’t rely on tourism!

Why it's ok to talk to people in Cornwall like that, and then be scathing when actual residents say the economy is mostly not dependent on tourism, I just don't know?

No-one is talking to ‘people on Cornwall’ like anything. You are not all alike. There are some Cornish posters on the thread being arsey and they are getting a commensurate response.

Cornwall is dependent on tourism however much you try to pretend it is not.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 21:43

Nice use of ‘commensurate.’ It’s one of my favourite words. So few opportunities to use it.

RaaRaaeee · 14/05/2020 21:49

Not read the whole thread, but sounds like you would be walking into an episode of the league of gentleman OP so I would cancel if I were you!

Inkpaperstars · 14/05/2020 21:59

Cornwall is dependent on tourism however much you try to pretend it is not.

With all the disruption to the supply chain maybe Cornwall can go back to smuggling while all this is happening. That would be kind of cool.

StinkyHedgehog · 14/05/2020 22:14

We have been going to Cornwall for many years, including family holidays when I was a child. But some of these posts have made me wonder now – are all those people who seem to be pleased to see us again REALLY pleased to see us? It makes me feel so sad to feel that the welcome we’ve always had has been completely false.

I live near (and shop in) a town which is a tourist hot spot. It never occurred to me that I should resent people who pay money to stay there and visit.

OrangeSamphire · 14/05/2020 22:25

@stinkyhedgehog, if you’ve made acquaintances and friendships, however casual, while you’re here then I’d be sure the welcome is genuine! 🙂

The locals I know in our village who are totally anti-tourist are not the majority and most of us have friends amongst the regular ‘summer people’ and second home owners. And the ones who are anti-tourist and anti-incomer of any kind certainly wouldn’t extend a false friendly welcome.

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 22:27

@StinkyHedgehog - I've lived here for 20 years and am now wondering whether my Cornish "friends" are talking about me and calling me an Emmet behind my back too! Let's hope not.

FortunesFavour · 14/05/2020 22:32

Snap stinkyhedgehog. I’ve been going since I was a child and now wonder whether were actually being resented the whole time?

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 14/05/2020 22:35

Oh come ooooonnnnn.
Years of living & visiting and a few arsey internet posters make you doubt your own experience?
L.O.L.

Tollergirl · 14/05/2020 22:43

I was joking- not sure about the others!

StinkyHedgehog · 14/05/2020 22:54

@Ihaventgottimeforthis Sadly yes, it does make me doubt the friendliness. I'm not just talking about local friends we meet up with there when we visit, I also mean people working in shops or restaurants who we chat to. I like to think that they've enjoyed the discussions we've had, but now I wonder.

I have other (non-Cornish) friends who live in Cornwall, and even they have been subjected to unkind comments recently because their accent "doesn't fit" and have been assumed to have been holidaymakers. They have said that the local social media pages are not remotely complimentary at all.

@OrangeSamphire Thankyou, gives me hope!

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 22:54

The others are not representative, I’m sure

FortunesFavour · 14/05/2020 22:56

Really not joking I’m afraid. I understand the concerns, however cumulative efffect of so many effing tourist posts across multiple threads for many weeks now has really put me off. It’s sad really, I’ve had some lovely times there.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 22:58

Stinky - I’ll be working on my accent,

‘Me ‘andsome’

StinkyHedgehog · 14/05/2020 23:02

@Daffodil101 Good idea, I'll start practising too :)

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 23:05

Proper job!

middleager · 14/05/2020 23:45

As I said upthread, I will return to Cornwall at some point in the future not now.

I don't come for the people. I don't come for the cream teas.
I come for the views, the sea and land, which is older than all of us.

As pp said, nobody owns these views. For those of us in built up cities, it is an annual release.

I couldn't give a toss if I'm welcome or if I can get an ice cream - the arrogance that this would keep me away!

The virus may, but not randoms. We are all entitled to the scenery aren't we?

I have family in Cornwall. They'll travel.up to the West Midlands when they can. They may visit the Clent Hills or Malverns, because nobody owns them.

Daffodil101 · 14/05/2020 23:54

Lovely post, Middleager. So calm and balanced. Not much of that about right now.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 14/05/2020 23:57

Op you really should be anle to get your money back. I hope it works out for you.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 15/05/2020 10:20

Wow, it's really surprised me that people don't trust their own intuition and experiences.
Honestly, if you've had a nice time here, and met nice friendly people, why let internet strangers ruin it?!
I'm not Cornish, lived here 20 years on and off, never had any problems whatsoever. And I have quite a 'posh' SE accent, not to be mistaken for a local.
The vast vast majority of people here either appreciate and welcome visitors who like where we live, and value their contribution, or could not give a shit either way.
So why miss out on having a lovely holiday?!
