Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

If the people of Cornwall don't want the disease to spread to them, then essential journey or not, these airport arrivals should be checked and quarantined.

Surely that applies to every part of the UK that doesn't want to increase viral spread? i.e. everywhere, because nobody wants that!

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:30

I agree Orange
Yes. We need border controls - checks and quarantine - to protect the whole of the UK.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:30

@ToffeeYoghurt it is perfectly possible to be concerned about both:

a) travel into the UK via our airports

and

b) the potential for unnecessary spread into virus-light areas of the UK if people are twats and ignore the guidance.

Luckily, for the most part, people are being sensible and following the rules.

In my own very small patch of Cornwall I haven't seen any more of the second homes fill up over the last few days. The people that came the weekend before lockdown are all still here. So, fine.

If that continues, great. If rules are able to relax safely in the coming weeks and months so people can have domestic UK holidays, great.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:31

Sorry, the beginning of my post sounded shirty @ToffeeYoghurt, not meant to be.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:33

There is rumour online of second homers arriving under cover of darkness and then couriering their luggage down here the next day. Not sure if there is any truth in that. I really hope not! But then I have faith in people to do the decent thing.

MyWitzEnd · 15/05/2020 18:37

no need for rudeness

kidof71 · 15/05/2020 18:41

We rearranged our self catering holiday cottage from end June to October.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:43

No worries @OrangeSamphire

I suspect it's a mischievous myth about people coming under cover of darkness. A bit like the smugglers of old...!

spababe · 15/05/2020 18:47

Bear in mind if you get Corona whilst here in Devon, your Nightingale hospital is in the old Homebase store staffed partly by local vets.
Personally, I cancelled our UK holiday and I'm staying at home.
Please come next year instead.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 18:48

I'd hardly call 'several' flocking. Flocking implies loads.
Perhaps the tiny number arriving are airport repatriations?

tigerlilly22 · 15/05/2020 18:51

We are booked the third week of July and are staying in a holiday complex a couple of miles away from the town centre. I've rang them numerous times and enquired about our £1200 refund so we can cancel which as of now they have refused us as they say they will be open. We will bring our own food shopping so we don't need to visit your shopping areas but we will be walking on your coastal paths and visiting your beaches. I am medical, I work in science. If I had any reason to believe my family to be a threat to the Cornish community believe me I wouldn't come. Maybe as somebody else pointed out, maybe the locals should take the holiday letting agencies and hotels to task who are refusing to pay back monies paid to them before the pandemic was even in the news. If the government are saying the public can go anywhere they want in this country then I'm sorry but they can. Doubt after this year and seeing the response of the SW I would ever want to visit your region again tbh.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 18:52

Yeah I'd take anything published by Devon Live or Cornwall Live with a HUGE pinch of salt.

I'm sure there are a few twats turning up. I'm also sure we can match them twat for twat with our own minority of 'emmet' yellers.

Meanwhile, the majority will continue following the rules.

TatianaBis · 15/05/2020 18:55

It is a problem that 95,000+ have arrived in the UK during lockdown. With no checks, no quarantine. It puts us all at risk and makes lockdown pointless.

It’s over 100,000 per week.

ToffeeYoghurt · 15/05/2020 19:03

Really Tatiana?
That's just shocking. I mean, if we had checks and quarantine, perhaps no problem. But huge numbers arriving in the UK with no checks at all and then heading off who knows where. What's the point of lockdown with this going on?

Orange Let's hope the airport issue gets sorted by the government and also that people continue being sensible. And hopefully when things are better we can all holiday safely again.

I like to think it's just a minority of people in the SW who are rude or unwelcoming. Unfortunately we get rude people everywhere. There's also nice people everywhere.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 19:08

It really is toffee. And if you go looking online you will certainly find it. In the comments sections of local rags, and in weird Facebook groups.

In real daily life, it's like anywhere. And as an incomer (from the dreaded London), I haven't personally experienced any regional xenophobia since moving here. I'm sure if I went looking for it, I'd find it.

Like the comments section of the Daily Mail I suppose. To be avoided!

I will be open and honest and say that not everyone loves tourism here, especially now it's become so overwhelming. 2018's summer sent some local people over the edge I think.

Most people here do tolerate tourism and welcome holidaymakers if they come across them in person. But it definitely comes with its negatives, and for a minority of vocal people, they would do anything to stop it. The virus has just amplified that message.

Zoejj77 · 15/05/2020 19:21

You might not even be able to get a haircut in July never mind a holiday. I’m sure you will qualify for a refund

tigerlilly22 · 15/05/2020 19:26

Thank you for saying that. Read some truly awful posts on here tonight. Nice to see this written from a local person.

Figmentofmyimagination · 15/05/2020 19:29

I love the idea of couriering your luggage down afterwards. Surely just about everything you need is already there. That’s one of the great joys of a second home.

OrangeSamphire · 15/05/2020 19:39

Don't be daft @figment, the other benefit to owning a second home is the income you can earn renting it out when you're not there 😂, so leaving spare knickers lying around might be a bit inappropriate Grin.

If I see any dpd vans showing up outside second homes here I shall know exactly what's occurring 😂

Abbifa · 15/05/2020 19:59

Please rethink coming down here at the moment. The south west has small hospitals, small GP surgeries and a very high population of the elderly and vulnerable. As much as we welcome tourists this time of year normally, (and they will be welcomed with open arms again) this is not the right time. I have family who are vulnerable and shielding, we have already had second home owners come down against government advice. My son would very much like to see his grandparents again soon, and I would like to see my mum and sister who is about to give birth to her first child. If the number rise again I don't know how long we will have to keep waiting to see our family

KinderWild · 15/05/2020 20:42

Had anyone booked with Aspects?

We're due to pay our final balance on 4 June for a holiday in St Ives on 7 July. Don't want to go because of CV and would rather cancel and get deposit back (assuming this is super unlikely to be okayed) or move the holiday to 2021, different dates. Can't get hold of the company so can't ask them. Does anyone know if it's likely they'd let us move the dates? Thanks!

Daffodil101 · 15/05/2020 20:48

We’ve used aspects a lot and they’re great but I don’t think they’ll give you a deposit back. I also think that unfortunately Boris saying that some hospitality opening from July 4th means that companies will (at this point in time) assume your holiday is going ahead and have no reason to reschedule it.

I sound really negative don’t I?! Sorry! Just that’s what I think from a business point of view.

AnnieCartwright · 15/05/2020 20:50

@Orangesamphire

I think you are possibly the only nice local on this thread. Many of the rest of you need to get a grip on your hysteria and vile comments.

bellabasset · 15/05/2020 20:55

I think that cottages and flats will be open by July, possibly caravan sites. That's all you are paying for, not the attractions, pubs, restaurants. At the moment many businesses that do catering ie pubs, restaurants are providing takeaway foods. I live near Fowey where there are narrow streets with minuscule pavements but houses have front doors and windows open to the street. So will there be restrictions on the nos walking through areas like this? How can you queue to go in businesses in these narrow streets.

There are no lifeguards on the beaches, ironically the weather has been warm, sunny with fantastic blue skies. 2020 holidays will be very different this year. If you want a quiet holiday away from crowded city life you'll enjoy yourself. There is a legitimate concern about visitors ignoring social distancing putting not only themselves but other visitors and residents at risk.
