Will Devon & Cornwall be ok to go to in July?

We are in a real dilemma.. We have to pay the balance on our holiday in the next couple of weeks which is about another £800 on top of the £400 deposit already paid.

We've gone for a self catering holiday flat on the Devon / Cornwall border for last week of June /
first week in July.

Don't really want to go if the touristy places we'd usually go to aren't open but our holiday company are only offering a reschedule so will lose our money if we cancel. We have a family wedding next year (hopefully) so we don't want to rebook.

We were pretty sure we'd still be in lockdown and be able to get a refund but now that the new rules are in place, I don't know if we are or aren't allowed to go.

AIBU to think we should be able to get our deposit back?

I spent a Christmas in Devon one year - it was wonderful! Or could you reschedule for next Easter. Spring comes early in the West country and assuming we have some sort of normality back by then, I'm sure locals will be glad of your tourist dollar by then.

I get that the locals don't wasn't visitors at the minute. My sister lives in the Lake District, how ever, much of the region's economy relies on tourism. They need us back.

I've got four days books at the end of July, if the hotel is open I will go!

If it's with Cottages they are being a nightmare about refunds and will only transfer the holiday so you may be better saving your money and having the freedom to book elsewhere is you are able to travel

I have a caravan holiday booked for Northumberland at the end of July. No way I’m going even if they are open, as nothing else will be. I will reschedule for next year or get a refund

We only ever do walks when we come and no attractions. We will follow rules but BIL is 100% certain he is going regardless. Hmm

You will only be able to do what you would be able to do at home and if you stay at home you will have the comfort of your home. I’m meant to be going to the new forest in august but I feel I would rather stay at home with my creature comforts. I live in Devon and people are concerned about tourists coming our way. I guess you have to do what’s right for you.

We’re from Cornwall but had to move away for work. We’re not expecting to be able to go home to see family for months.

I think holidays this year are extremely unlikely.

I'm on the devon cornwall border. Please don't come. As a pp said we haven't had our peak yet. Derriford hospital won't cope

I live in Devon and I'll be really pissed off if tourists start flocking down this way any time soon. You won't be welcome any more than I would be welcome to come and stand outside your home bringing whatever germs I have along with me.

We don't have the massive hospitals that most counties have, so we would easily become overwhelmed if tourists start coming on holiday here. It's just one year - suck it up, put your big girl pants on and keep away.

Stay home, don't be an asshole.

My dilemma is this, we used to live in Cornwall and still have family there so I do understand why they may not want tourists this year. We have booked a lodge on a park for the end of July but my DH has diabetes and has recently had to have laser treatment on his eyes which means he can't drive long distances, we live a 6 hour drive away from cornwall.

The park we are going to are not taking cancellations for July at the moment but are due to take our full payment at the end of this month. If the lockdown ends before our holiday is due we will be liable to pay the full amount but will not be able to go due to DH eye problem.

Will we still have to pay the full amount due and if so will we get a refund?

I live in cornwall and have been told by friends working in eden project type places they dont expect to open this summer at all

I'm in exactly the same position as you. Don't want to go, but don't want to lose our deposit either, which will happen unless we pay the full balance by the end of next week. Then we might end up losing the lot.

It's all well and good, and completely understandable, for locals to demand that those of us who've already booked should stay away, but the (mostly local) owners of the holiday cottages are not helping the situation by insisting on keeping our money if we cancel.

Don’t bother. Write off the £400 to save the £800. Nothing will change in July. If anything we are heading for another wave in the summer now the lockdown rules have been relaxed.

Also, even if you are self catering, you will need to think about food.
I have just checked my local Tesco delivery. I am in Cornwall. There is nothing up to June 2nd, and after that, no dates released. So essentially you can’t get a delivery. I don’t need one yet but might do soon for various reasons. And I won’t be able to get one. No click and collect either.
So yo’ll have to visit the supermarket, which will make queues longer. And also, if the supermarkets are ordering stuff according to what has been bought up to now, then loads of people turning up and buying will mess that up and there will be less on the shelves for everyone.
So you might need to think seriously about bringing your own food.

I live in cornwall and have been told by friends working in eden project type places they dont expect to open this summer at all That's interesting. I volunteer at one of the NT properties on the Devon/Cornwall border, and I think the car park is reopening, so people will be able to walk, but I would have thought the house would stay closed this season, as social distancing would be well nigh impossible, unless you only have one person plus the room guides in at a time.

Lucinda Derriford has more of a chance at coping than Treliske! I am glad to be at the Derriford end of the county.

Devon nor Cornwall have hit their peak yet-local hospital estimates end of May early June. Nothing is open and the few shops that are open are struggling with social distancing for the few year round locals we have, let alone the second home owners who have sneaked in and all the day trippers. We will still be here at Xmas and next year-visit then instead please.

I think the gov will let them go. So if i lived there i would stsrt stockpiling so i didnt need to food shop etc over the summer. We've managed to go almost 3w between shops.

For those determined to go - think of italy
1 the apartments which likely had traces of covid in as it can live up to 7 days on surfaces.
2 the effect those tourists had on the locals
3 the effect on your local area when you return from mingling with lots of other tourists ie what happened to the whole uk because of the italy ski trip people who werent asked to isolate.

We are also in a low area but actually you are then now at higher risk as nobody has immunity zo will spread faster than london.

Please don't come. I live in Devon and today many of my friends and family noticed an influx of people from the midlands turning up to our beaches. One of the holiday parks is operating as BAU.
Honestly, you won't be welcomed, and nothing is open.

Friend has airbnb holiday lets, not a whisper from them if there is to be a soft opening at all. I would cancel holiday, lose the deposit, because then you can close the door on that plan and start thinking of something else. You could reschedule, but as you say have a wedding next year. My friend does not expect to reopen until September at the earliest.

I'm supposed to be going on holiday to North Devon the same week as you but, even if it's not cancelled by the holiday park, we won't be going.

We're hoping that we might be able to take the caravan for a week in mid-late July and then another in August, but heading out east rather than to the West Country. We have family over there whom we only get to see in person once or twice a year. Those are the only two weeks we can get off.

Surely a caravan/camp site lends itself to social distancing, doesn't it - one family/household unit contained in a spot a number of metres away from all others? They might have to have queues or allocated time slots in the toilet and shower block, though.

We're optimistic (and the caravan site is, too, after I called them)- maybe foolishly so....

Frigging hell, don’t come to the east either. Just stay at home ffs, your holiday isn’t more important than not spreading a disease around so you can sit on a different bit of grass.
